Chapter 11
"You ready?" Adam asks as he walks into the bedroom with Austin following closely behind him. The greenhorn was grinning like the Cheshire Cat.
Tim looks up from the book he was reading.
"Ready for what?" Tim asks with a raised brow.
"To go to town." Adam states with a smile.
"You were actually being serious?" Tim asks as he looks from Adam to the smiling idiot.
"Of course I was being serious." Adam says as he stoops down in front of the chair Tim was sitting in. "I want you to see how everything has progressed."
"Come on, old man, you'll love it." Austin says with a smirk on his lips. "I just wish I could be there to witness the look on your face."
"I'm not too sure about this, Adam." Tim says as he turns his eyes to meet those of his lover.
"Come on, Sweetie. I'll be right there beside you the whole time." Adam says with a pout. "And if you start feeling weak, we'll leave immediately."
Despite his protest, Tim soon found himself inside Adam's horseless carriage. They were driving down a weird path that had four roads (a freeway). Other horseless carriages were passing them on either side. All were strange looking. Different shapes, sizes and colors. Some were really big pulling large wagons behind them (semis). He saw what he thought might have been a modern-day stagecoach (an RV) but no horses were pulling it.
Adam couldn't help but smile at the strange look on his lover's face. It was a mixer of confusion, excitement, panic, and fear all balled up in one expression.
"What in the hell is that?" Tim asks as a motorcycle speeds by them. It looked to him like a horse with no head or legs.
"Honey, that's a motorcycle." Adam answers with a chuckle.
Tim's jaw drops as they head into the big city. He had never seen anything like it. The buildings almost reached the sky. The buildings he remembered were all made of wood. These were shiny with a lot of windows.
Adam pulls his horseless carriage into a corral with other horseless carriages (parking lot).
"Is this it? Can we go home now?" Tim asks as he looks around at Adam. His eyes wide with panic.
"Sweetie, we haven't even gotten out of the car yet." Adam laughs.
"I was afraid you were gonna say that." Tim sighs as he nervously runs a hand through his hair.
Adam gets out of the car and walks around to the passenger side. Opening the door, he smiles as he holds his hand out to Tim. Tim reluctantly takes his hand and gets out of the car.
Tim clutched tightly to his lover's hand as they begin to walk down the crowded sidewalk. Tim was constantly having to apologize to people that he would bump into as he tried to take in all the strange sights.
He just could not get over how tall the buildings were. As he is looking up at one of the tall shiny buildings, something catches his eye. He stops in his tracks as he watches the large silver object that seemed to be floating across the sky.
Adam turns around to see why his lover had stopped. Following his gaze, he sees the large airplane that had just taken off from a nearby airport.
He realizes then that some things that he sees every day and don't give a second thought about are going to be hard to explain to the cowboy.
"That's an airplane, Sweetie." Adam says, silently hoping that the cowboy wouldn't ask questions.
"Is it flying? How? It's not flapping its wings." Tim says as he watches the strange object disappear over one of the tall buildings.
"No, airplanes are not living creatures. They're a form of transportation." Adam tries his best to answer.
"There's people inside? This sh*t is about to freak me out." Tim says as he glances around him. "Oh, sorry." Tim says as he bumps into someone else.
"Why don't you watch where you're going." The man growls as he continues on.
"D*mn, people are rude. If I had my gun, he'd be laying on the sidewalk." Tim says.
"Shhhh." Adam giggles as he leads Tim further down the street. "Look! A book store. You like to read don't you?"
"I love to read. It's just I've read all the books in the house about ten times each through the years." Tim answers.
"Come on. I'll get you some new books to read." Adam says as he leads the cowboy into the book store.
Adam grabbed a few classic novels that he thought Tim would enjoy, 'Lord of The Flies', 'Call of The Wild', and 'The Scarlet Letter'. He decided to take a chance on more modern books such as 'The Lord of The Rings' trilogy, 'Jaws', 'The Amityville Horror' and a couple of Stephen King novels.
"That will keep you busy at night while I sleep." Adam chuckles as they walk out of the book store.
"Probably be more exciting than watching you sleep." Tim replies with a smirk.
They visit several stores. Adam was pointing out simple things that weren't invented when Tim was alive. Some of the items he had seen before but didn't know what they were called or how they worked. Items that different owners of the house would use. Such as vacuum cleaners, microwaves, lawnmowers, cell phones, laptops, and electric razors, etc...
Other things Tim would ask why someone would want to invent such unnecessary items such as roller blades, skateboards, lava lamps, and spinners.
"Entertainment." Adam would answer. "They're fun."
"Entertainment? Okay? But I thought that is what whore houses were for. Or saloon shows." Tim chuckles as Adam rolls this eyes and shakes his head.
After leaving one of the stores, they come across a small cafe with an outside seating area. Tim might not have to eat but Adam did and he was getting quite hungry. He placed his order for a cheeseburger, fries and a large coke.
As his food arrived and he began to eat, Tim asked questions about some of the things he had seen. Some of the questions he could answer but some were just too complicated or he just didn't know the answers. Questions like, 'How was that metal bird (airplane) able to fly?' or 'How did that coffee pot know what time to start making coffee?'.
Some of the questions seemed silly. But Adam could tell that Tim just didn't understand modern technology but was very interested in learning. So the blonde promised to look the answers up on the computer and Tim could read all about it.
"I have to go use the bathroom. I'll be right back." Adam says as he collects his trash from the table and walks inside the cafe.
Tim looks around while sitting at the table. The world had gotten so crowded and noisy. People were rude and seemed to be in a hurry. Most of them had their eyes glued to the thing that Adam called a cell phone. There were way too many horseless carriages on the road.
"I wonder what that's for?" Tim asks himself as he sees a box hanging from a wire. He slowly gets up to check it out. The red, yellow and green lights interested him. He steps out to get a closer look.
Adam comes out of the cafe and his heart begins to race when he sees that Tim was no longer sitting at the table.
"Oh, my God." He breathes as he frantically looks around.
A sudden blast from a semi's airhorn draws his attention to the street. His heart drops into the pit of his stomach when he hears Tim scream.
The blonde pushes through the crowd that had stopped at the commotion.
"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU, YOU MORON!!" The trucker was yelling as Adam exited the crowd.
"Oh, sh*t." Adam whispers as he sees Tim standing in the street with his hands over his ears. The semi was just inches away from him. The shopping bags Tim had been carrying were scattered near his feet. "TIM!!"
Tim slowly turns his head toward the sound of his lover's voice. His brown eyes wide with fear.
"Can... Can we go.. home now?" Tim asks in a trembling voice.
