Epilogue
When Virgil woke up he no longer felt any pain from being shot. He couldn't feel anything, actually. No warm blood pooling at his side, no cold hand holding his or pressure against his wound. When he slowly opened his eyes he noticed that no one was right there beside of him.
Virgil slowly rose to his feet, looking around the bathroom that he had originally passed out in. Why wasn't he in the hospital? Where had everyone else gone? He began to make his way towards the door when he paused, standing just in front of the mirror.
The reflection staring back at him couldn't be his.
Virgil rushed over to look more closely in the mirror, not trusting his eyes. He reached out a pale hand to touch the mirror, only to find that it passed right through. Eyes wide, Virgil stared at the mirror with his mouth agape, studying his pale complexion. His eyes traveled down towards his stomach-the place that Lee had shot him what felt like moments before. He could indeed see that his shirt was torn and bloodied, and could see the bullet hole that still wasn't hurting.
Virgil was dead.
Virgil was a ghost.
The dead student rushed to the door of the bathroom, reaching to pull it open only for his hand to pass right through, retracting his hand a moment later like it had been burned. He paused to stare at it for a moment before slowly reaching out and passing right through again. This time he left it there, the rest of his body soon following it through. Once he had gotten all the way out he found himself in the hallways of the school once more, retracing his steps down the hallway he had walked through with Logan, Patton, and Roman. He walked until he found the gymnasium again, which was just as empty as the bathroom he woke up in. Where the hell had everyone gone?
Virgil picked up his speed a little, peering into classrooms as he went. He knew where he really needed to go though. The most important place he needed to check. He just hoped that Logan hadn't moved on without him.
By the time Virgil made it to the library he had broken out into a run, desperate to find Logan or anybody at this point. He slowed down a little before meeting with the library doors, his brain still screaming at him to stop before he ran into it. He didn't stop, and managed to once again pass right through.
"Logan!" Virgil shouted as soon as he crossed into the library. "Logan! Please be in here, Logan!"
"Virgil?" He heard from across the library, turning to see Logan standing there looking relieved. The new ghost bolted immediately towards him, throwing himself at him and reveling in the fact that he could actually throw his arms around Logan, that he wouldn't pass right through him. Logan's arms closed back around him instantly, squeezing him close as Virgil buried his face into Logan's shoulder.
"You're here," Logan said softly, laying his head against Virgil's. "I'm so glad you're here. I'm so sorry I wasn't waiting for you, that you had to wake up alone. I should've stayed but I-I couldn't... I just couldn't be in the room that you died in, I'm sorry Virgil."
"It's okay," Virgil murmured, lips brushing Logan's shoulder when he talked. "Don't be sorry. I'm just glad you're here at all. I thought you might have moved on already... I didn't want to be alone here."
"I couldn't possibly leave you." Logan assured Virgil, pulling back slightly to look at him. "As soon as they put cuffs on Lee and Christopher I knew that wasn't the end of my unfinished business. You have become way more important to me than finding them ever was."
Virgil stared back at him, thinking over his words. They were sweet, and Virgil knew that Logan was more important to him than anything too. Still, he couldn't help but be worried by the fact that they were still there.
"But... shouldn't you have passed on or something if you were going to by now? They were caught, and I'm here now." Virgil questioned, frown tugging at his lips.
"I can't explain how I know this," Logan started, hand hesitantly coming up to touch Virgil's cold cheek. "But I know that I will move on soon, and that I am only here until you are ready to go too. So don't worry about me, Virgil. When we go, we go together."
"So... What now? We just have to figure out why I'm still here? How are we supposed to do that?" Virgil asked, staring up at Logan worriedly.
"Calm down, Virgil." Logan spoke calmly. "I'm here to help you, just like you helped me. We'll figure it out in no time."
Virgil continued to look up at Logan, the ghost he had grown to love, the person he had died for. He held Logan closer to him, pulling him down into a long kiss that Logan quickly returned. Virgil could trust Logan. If he said that they would figure it out together, then that's what would happen. No matter what came next Virgil knew that Logan would be by his side.
****
It was a few days before anyone living entered the school building again. Logan and Virgil had spent their time together, Logan teaching Virgil things about being a ghost. He helped him to figure out speaking so that anyone could hear him, although they didn't really have anyone to test this out with, as well as how to touch and move things.
It felt weird when people did show up at the school again. Virgil and Logan were walking down the halls of the school when the front doors opened early in the morning. Teachers were entering the school building one by one, going to their respective classrooms and presumably preparing for when the students were going to come back to the school.
Virgil didn't like how their eyes seemed to look right through him and Logan. It was like they weren't there at all, like they didn't exist.
It was different when they spotted Ms. Spirits.
Almost immediately as she entered the door her eyes locked onto Virgil's, staring at him as she froze in the doorway. She looked terrible, her eyes red like she had been crying and bags beneath them obvious. Her shoulders sagged, and she just looked tired.
She stared at them for some time before another teacher, someone else Virgil had a class in, stopped to talk to her. The man hugged her, understanding her hesitance to enter as sadness from losing a student again. She kept her eyes locked on the two dead boys while he tried to comfort her, and from where they were standing Logan and Virgil could hear the teacher encouraging her to take the day off.
"No, no." Ms. Spirits shook her head, finally looking away from them and up at the younger teacher. "I'm alright dear, thank you though. I can do this."
The young man continued to talk to her, but Virgil and Logan decided to head back to the library rather than listen in. Virgil was feeling uncomfortable with all of the people that weren't seeing them anyways.
Not much later on that day the doors to the library opened, and Ms. Spirits walked inside. She looked around for any other teachers before approaching the two boys that sat at a table in the center of the room. She took a seat beside the two of them, looking nervous as she met Virgil's curious gaze.
"Hey, Ms. Spirits." Virgil started, waving awkwardly towards the woman.
"I'm afraid that I can see you Virgil, but I can't hear you." Ms. Spirits explained, frown on her lips.
Virgil looked towards Logan, frowning as well.
"Remember what I taught you?" Logan asked, making sure both Virgil and Ms. Spirits could hear him. Virgil slowly nodded his head, looking back to Ms. Spirits and focusing hard on being heard.
"Can you... can you hear me now?" Virgil tried after a moment, looking towards the teacher who smiled the slightest bit for the first time since he had seen her again.
"I can hear you." She confirmed. She watched him for a few moments, smile slowly slipping. "I'm sorry, Virgil."
"Logan said that too." Virgil commented, shrugging it off. "I don't know why you're sorry."
"I shouldn't have let you go confront him." Ms. Spirits explained herself. "I should have known something was going to happen. I... if only I had predicted sooner-"
"How could you possibly have predicted that would happen?" Virgil cut her off, eyebrows furrowed. "This isn't your fault."
"Virgil, I'm the one who called the police and an ambulance a few minutes earlier than Roman did." Ms. Spirits said. "I knew you were going to get hurt a few minutes before it happened. Seeing ghosts isn't the only thing I do. I... I was still too late, though."
Virgil and Logan both shared shocked looks, wondering just how much about their teacher they didn't know. Virgil quickly snapped out of those thoughts though, and instead stood to go and wrap Ms. Spirits in a hug.
"It's not your fault. You tried your best to help us out." He told her, feeling her arms wrapping back around his shoulders. "Me and Logan both appreciate everything you did for us. You helped us catch Christopher and Lee. Because of you Logan can finally be at peace."
"I suppose I did help with some things, but you have all of the credit for bringing Logan peace." Ms. Spirits said, squeezing Virgil close for a moment longer before releasing the boy. She met his eyes with a smile. "You've helped him more than anyone else has been able to."
"I still owe you a lot, Ms. Spirits." Logan said, cold hand finding the teacher's on the table and resting on top of it. "Neither of us want to see you blaming yourself for what happened."
"Besides... even if you hadn't helped us out you know us. We wouldn't have given up until we found Logan's killer and probably ended up the same way." Virgil added on. Ms. Spirits smiled slightly at that.
"You are very brave and smart young boys." She looked between the two of them, clearly proud. "I don't know what comes next for you two, but you certainly deserve something good. I wish you luck in moving on from here."
****
It took another two weeks before the students returned to school. Logan and Virgil weren't in the hallways when they arrived this time, instead hanging out together in the library. Virgil was practicing more at talking and being seen by living people. It had become a routine by now, practicing ghost things during the mornings, spending time together while Logan read the library books during the day, and making sure he was making progress when Ms. Spirits came to visit the library before she left the school.
However, when the two of them heard more noise than usual from outside they decided to take a break to see what was going on. They found themselves standing outside of the library doors, watching the students make their way through the halls and to their classes.
After some time of standing there Virgil caught sight of Patton and Roman for the first time since the night he died. It hit him almost immediately as he saw them walking down the hallway. This was it. He was here because of them.
He still needed to say a proper goodbye. He needed to make sure they were going to be okay.
The air around him turned colder as he saw Patton glancing their way, peering past them and into the library doors. He looked miserable. His shoulders were slumped, eyes red, bags underneath them. Roman didn't look much better.
When Roman caught Patton looking at the library his hand found its way into Patton's, regaining his attention. He said something to him, smiling slightly to comfort him, and Patton seemed to relax and take his hand back. Beside of Virgil, Logan did the same thing, taking a hold of his hand as he noticed the temperature drop.
"I have to talk to them," Virgil said, looking up at Logan.
"Let them get to class first." Logan said, squeezing his hand. "I'm sure they will come to check the library for us when they're ready. Give them time."
Virgil didn't want to wait to see his friends again, but he knew he should listen to Logan. He had learned that his emotions got out of hand very quickly when he thought of how he died, or how he had to wait to see his friends again. Just like Logan had gotten angry before. And just like Logan, Virgil was only calmed by the others presence.
Virgil turned to wrap his arms around Logan, eyes squeezing shut as he buried his face in his shoulder. "I miss them."
"Me too." Logan said, kissing the top of Virgil's head. "I'm sure we'll talk to them again soon. Be patient, Virgil."
Logan and Virgil stayed in the library for the rest of the day rather than wandering through the halls as they sometimes did. Logan told Virgil it was probably best that he didn't run into Patton or Roman before they came to see them. His emotions were unpredictable now, and they didn't want to interrupt them getting back to normal. They were there now, sitting close together on the floor in front of a bookshelf close to the back of the library(they had been sat in a few too many times by students who couldn't see them, and Logan wanted to read without drawing attention to the pages moving on their own), Logan's arms wrapped around Virgil's shoulders as he leaned into Logan, who used his ghost abilities to keep the book on the page he wanted.
The two of them had gotten used to hearing the library doors opening and closing so they paid it no mind when it happened again. It was when they heard a voice calling out into the library that the pair startled, sharing a look.
"Is anyone here?" Called the unmistakeable voice of Patton. "Logan... V-Virgil?"
"Patton," Virgil said, rising to his feet quickly and rushing out to the library entrance. Logan followed quickly after him, book lying abandoned on the ground.
"Hold on, Virgil," Logan called but he was a moment too late-Virgil had forgotten that they couldn't see or feel him, and he ran right through Patton and Roman who was right behind him.
"Logan?" Patton asked as he shivered, looking around. "Was that you?"
"Shit," Virgil said as he turned back towards them. He stepped back to stand in front of them, this time not passing through them, and tried to focus. Logan did the same beside of him.
"Logan! You're here," Patton breathed, staring at the ghost who had been the only one to form so far. "Wh-Why... Weren't you meant to pass on, or something?"
"I can't pass on without Virgil." Logan explained, looking to his boyfriend who was trying very hard now to be visible.
"Virgil," Roman spoke up, frown on his lips. "Is he here too?"
"I'm here," Virgil spoke up, relieved when the other two looked at him. At least he had gotten that to work. "Give me a second, I'm working on being visible."
"You're... you're really here," Patton muttered, hands over his mouth as tears gathered in his eyes. "You're-oh god, you're a ghost!"
"And not a very good one." Virgil joked, not earning any laughs from Patton. Virgil frowned to himself. Patton always laughed at his jokes. He liked to find things to laugh about even in the worst of situations. Why wasn't he laughing now?
"I can't-I can't believe that you're... oh Virgil, I'm so sorry!" Patton sobbed, tears spilling quickly down his cheeks and onto the floor below.
"Hey, hey, Pat," Virgil stepped forward to wrap his arms around his friend, who jumped when he touched him. Patton soon relaxed into the hug though, arms squeezing him so tightly that were he alive it would have hurt. "It's okay. You don't have anything to be sorry for."
"I should have done better! I should have helped you, I should... I'm sorry." He cried into Virgil's shoulder, eyes closed and not realizing yet that Virgil had become visible now.
"Patton," Virgil frowned, holding his friend tighter. "You couldn't have done anything. It isn't your fault... please don't blame yourself."
"That's what I've been trying to tell him these last few weeks," Roman muttered, stepping up to rub Patton's back comfortingly and to see Virgil closer. "I'm glad you're still here to tell him the same."
"I won't be for long," Virgil whispered, pulling back from the hug to look at his two friends. He grabbed onto both of their hands, squeezing tightly. "I'm sorry I can't stick around. I wish... I wish we could have been friends a lot longer."
"Wow," Roman sounded a little choked up for the first time since Virgil had met him. He could tell Roman was trying his best to stay composed though. "That's... you called me your friend."
"You are my friend, Roman." Virgil told him with a small smile. "I know we joked around a lot, and didn't like each other at first, but... you've done a lot for me and Logan. I'm glad you stuck around."
"I'm just glad I got to know you all," Roman replied, unable to keep the tears from his eyes now. "You're the first real friends I ever had, and I... I'll miss you."
"We'll miss you too." Logan said, stepping closer to join in with saying their goodbyes. Virgil nodded in agreement with him, smiling and looking between his two friends.
"I was so lucky to meet such great people before I died." Virgil said softly. "I never had friends before Logan either. So please, please don't feel guilty over my death." He looked at Patton more as he spoke, worry obvious. "You made my life amazing while I was living it. You helped me so much... I could never thank you enough."
"I... I'll try not to," Patton promised, tears still falling from his eyes.
"Good. Cause if you do, I will come back and haunt your ass." Virgil grinned, and finally Patton cracked a smile. "You better take care of each other, too."
"We will." Roman assured him, taking Patton's hand in his own with a blush. Logan and Virgil caught Patton's own face heating up, sharing a glance. Before they could say anything the both of them felt a tug. It was pulling them up, and in front of Patton and Roman they were starting to disappear bit by bit. They both stepped forwards to hug Patton and Roman briefly.
"I think we're... moving on, now. Please tell Ms. Spirits goodbye for us. And just... one more favor, for the both of us." Logan started, taking a hold of Virgil's hand when they pulled away from their final hug.
Virgil continued on for him, knowing where he was going. "Stay safe, and please... just start dating already."
And it's over
Wow. It's been freaking amazing working on this book over the last year, and seeing people enjoy it. This is the first book I've made that people liked enough to make fanart and cosplay for it!! That's absolutely insane, and I could never even begin to verbalize just how much I love and appreciate your support. Even just the kind comments that I get on this book mean the absolute world to me. You all are the reason I was able to find the motivation to push through and complete this book, and you've made it so fun that I don't even want it to end.
But of course, all stories have to have an ending. I hope that the ending here was satisfying-yes, I did kill Virgil off but at least he and Logan get to be together. And as for where they went... I'm gonna leave that open ended. There are many ideas of where we go when we all pass on, and none of us truly have the answer to that. So I think it's fitting that we don't get to know where exactly they went either. You're welcome to think of it any way you want.
I really hope you enjoyed this story, and I hope you'll stick around for my future works. If you liked this book and want to read more, maybe follow me? Or you can just read my sanders Sides oneshots book, which I'll always update when I've got a new book coming up. I plan to work on my other book that is up first, Tally Marks (there's over 40 chapters in that one if you wanna catch up before I start working on it-you'll have time, I'm probably gonna take a break for a little while). I've also got tons of new ideas for books that I'll be starting as soon as my outlines for them are done, so I promise I'm not gonna be running out of new stories to write anytime soon. I hope to see you there.
Anyways... thanks again guys, for everything. This has been a lot of fun. Take care of yourselves. Bye!-Bob
