Fingers tapped nervously at the cafeteria table, Virgil's eyes glancing back up at the clock every few minutes, bottom lip caught between his teeth. He just wanted to get out of there already. Lunch was always boring anyways. It seemed like time always went slower when he was alone, as he always was during school. The sooner time passed the sooner he could get to the library to meet with the only person in the school who actually spoke to him.
He jumped when he noticed someone standing beside of his table, expecting to find one of the idiots who seemed to never have anything better to do than make his school life horrible. He was surprised to see someone he didn't really know, frowning up at him as the other smiled back.
"Hi! Sorry to bother you, I just happened to notice you were sitting alone, and well... Would you mind if I sat with you?" The other student asked, looking nervous. Virgil didn't know what to say, sitting frozen in silence for a moment. No one ever wanted to sit by him; most of the school thought he was weird. He slowly found himself nodding, watching the strange student's face light up as he took a seat on the other side of Virgil's table.
For a moment there was silence between them as the boy across from Virgil ate his lunch. Virgil wasn't sure if he was going to talk again, and briefly wondered if maybe he should try to start up a conversation. Luckily, it didn't seem like he would have to as the student looked back up at him and spoke once again.
"My name is Patton, by the way. What's yours?" Patton smiled at him again, and Virgil once more found himself unable to answer for a moment.
"Virgil," he mumbled out at last, glancing away from the smiling student. His cheeks were burning, very aware of just how awkward he was being. Surely Patton was going to realize he was just as weird as everyone else said, and he would leave him alone again. He wasn't sure why this thought made his mood drop as much as it did. He should be used to it by now.
"That's a cool name!" Patton grinned, surprising Virgil. Many people had made comments on his name after he told them, but none of them thought it was cool. They normally said that it was weird, just like he was. The only other person who didn't have anything negative to say to him about his name was Logan.
"Thanks," Virgil tried to hide his smile at the comment, his hand going over his mouth. He was sure that Patton had noticed it though, but he didn't say anything and Virgil was glad. He listened quietly as Patton started talking about something, occasionally answering questions he was asked. He was glad that the other did most of the talking, but still included him and listened when he wanted to speak up. Virgil was surprised just how comfortable he already felt after a few minutes of talking to Patton, and found that time went by way too quickly as he spoke to him.
Sooner than he expected it was time for them to get back to class, and Virgil found that he was really disappointed at this. Usually he couldn't wait for lunch to be over just so he could be closer to spending time with Logan, but now he really just wanted to stay and talk with Patton. He frowned to himself as he realized Patton probably wouldn't talk to him again tomorrow, and as much as he wanted to ask if he could he knew the other student likely only sat with him because his friend's were out of school that day or something similar.
He was surprised when Patton stopped him from leaving the lunchroom quickly by grabbing his arm, looking down at it and then up to Patton's face, questioning. Patton quickly let go of him, stepping back and smiling nervously. "Sorry! I was just wondering... Could we maybe talk again tomorrow? You don't have to of course, I just-"
Virgil cut him off with a wide smile he made no attempts to hide, nodding his head. "Yeah, that sounds... nice." He agreed, and Patton smiled back.
"Great!" He beamed, already beginning to turn and head to his next class. "See you tomorrow then, Virge!"
Virgil watched him go for a minute, face flushing at the nickname given and still smiling widely. "Yeah," he mumbled to himself, turning to walk to his own class. "See you tomorrow."
