Chapter warnings: guns, blood, mentions of death. As another warning: This is the final chapter. There will be an epilogue following shortly. Huge thanks to my girlfriend Winchester_At_Heart for reading this ahead of time and making sure it was good lmao.
Hey! Before this chapter I'd just like to mention that I recently set up a patreon account. I could really use some money, and it'd be awesome if I could make some through writing since writing is the thing I'm most passionate about! You don't have to feel obligated to of course, but I would greatly appreciate the support. The link to my patreon is in the description on my account. Thanks to anyone who considers it, and of course just thank you for reading! Hope you enjoy the chapter. ^•^
"Wait..." Patton broke the silence after Christopher had finished explaining what exactly took place on the day that Logan died. "You told? Your dad knows what happened?"
Christopher gave a hesitant nod of his head, sniffling as more apologies spilled from his lips, the terror still not leaving his voice.
"But if your dad knows-" Patton started.
"Then why does no one else?" Virgil finished, meeting the eyes of the person who had murdered his best friend. More than friend? Virgil shook those thoughts off-that wasn't important right now.
"I wanted to tell," Christopher admitted, staring back at the floor again. The floor in front of the stall they now knew Logan had died in. "I really wanted everyone to know I did it. Especially when I saw how torn up your family was..." He looked back up, his eyes full of tears and sincerity meeting Logan's. "I really, really wanted to. But my dad-my dad said I couldn't."
At that moment the group heard the bathroom door behind them slam opened. Logan quickly disappeared, also releasing his hold on Christopher while the living students all whirled around to see what was going on, shocked and scared to find Christopher's dad Lee was there, and he looked angry.
"I knew you kids were up to something," Lee snarled as he stepped inside, hand resting on his belt. He looked towards Christopher next, glaring at him. "And you. I told you to stay away from here. I knew it'd just cause us both trouble."
"We know what you did." Virgil blurted out, staring Lee down nervously. He somehow made his way in front of his friends, trying to act as a shield in case something happened. Normally he would find his bravery in this moment odd, but right now his mind was too preoccupied with other things to think about that. "You helped cover up the murder of an innocent teenager."
"Yes well, good for you." Lee remarked, taking a step closer to Virgil, his fingers curled around his gun. "So, what do you want? Will money keep your mouths shut?"
"We don't want anything except for justice for Logan and his family who never found out what happened to him!" Patton exclaimed from behind Roman, who was also guarding him from Lee.
"We want both of you to rot away in a jail cell." Roman added on, glaring at the man who glared right back at the three of them.
Lee studied each of them for a moment, eying Virgil especially. Just as Virgil was about to take a step away from the man in front of him a hand was grabbing at the collar of his hoodie, roughly tugging him towards Lee and choking him in the process. Virgil's hands scrambled to pull Lee's away from him, heart thundering in his chest as he tried to get away. He stopped abruptly at the feeling of cool metal resting against his forehead, his whole body seeming to go cold but not from the comforting presence of Logan this time.
"Alright then. How about this-you don't tell anyone what you heard here today... and your friend gets to go home safely. And if you ever do try to say something later..." Lee pressed the gun harder against Virgil's forehead, not needing to say anything else for them to get the picture.
Virgil stared at his friends helplessly as they took in what Lee was saying, frowning as he wondered just what Logan was doing. Where had he gone? Could he manage to get Virgil away from Lee without him pulling the trigger?
"Dad, stop!" Christopher spoke up, startling the teenagers. Lee just stared at him, eye twitching in irritation. "Please, dad. No other kids need to die, please just let him go."
"I will not let this secret get out." Lee spoke flatly, eyes darting back every once in a while to make sure the other teenagers weren't moving to pull anything.
"He's just a kid. He's trying to do the right thing, which is what we should have done from the beginning!" Christopher pleaded with his father, taking a step closer to him.
"And like I said then, I will not have some stupid mistake by my mistake of a son ruining our entire family's reputation!" Lee snapped back, finger tightening the slightest bit around the trigger. Christopher took a few steps back quickly, hands up in surrender. He seemed to pause and tilt his head to the side as if trying to hear someone.
"Okay, okay. But just think... if you hurt him, it's going to get out." Christopher reasoned. He gestured towards Roman and Patton. "They'll tell someone. And if you hurt them too, then I'll tell. Are you really willing to kill your child just to keep this secret?"
"I'll do whatever it takes to avoid having our reputation as a family ruined." Lee said, without a single moment of hesitation. Christopher flinched at his words, seeming to realize only now just how little he meant to his father.
"If you do that, then there's a relationship tying you to the crime." Christopher continued reasoning.
Virgil noticed that as Lee was considering this, his hand holding the gun began to pull back from his head slowly. He finally drew in a short breath, too scared to before. Maybe this would work. Hopefully.
"No matter what you do now... you're going to be found out." Christopher said, looking hopeful himself as the gun was now a few inches away from Virgil.
"If... if people are going to find out regardless..." Lee said, finally sounding somewhat panicked for once. "I might as well take you all out with me."
Logan appeared suddenly in front of Lee and pulled his arm down at the same exact moment that Lee's finger pressed down on the trigger. A loud bang sounded off along with screams from each of the students.
Everything from that point onwards happened in a blur for Virgil. He could hear the pained cries of Lee and a snapping sound-presumably Logan's doing-and he saw the gun being moved across the room and far away from Lee. After that he could see his three best friends rushing to his side. When did he get on the floor? Why did they all sound so concerned? His vision was fading in and out, staring blankly at Logan who was right above him.
After a moment he felt a pressure being placed on his side, and only then did he register the terrible pain he was experiencing there. He quickly snapped back to reality at that, eyes wide as he gazed around the room. Lee was in the corner, arm bent unnaturally and seeming to be praying. Christopher was in another corner, no longer crying and watching the four worriedly. Virgil's eyes finally looked down to where the pain was coming from, feeling queasy at the sight that met him.
Blood. Lots of blood spreading through his clothing, spilling between the fingers of the warm, almost burning hands of Patton, and dripping onto the bathroom floor. He had been shot.
"Virgil, you're going to be okay. Can you hear me? Everything is going to be okay?" Virgil could finally focus on Logan's voice, speaking worriedly to him. He could also hear Roman in the background calling 911, but he focused more on Logan's voice.
"There's too much blood." Virgil slurred, meeting Logan's eyes. He lifted his hand up with much resistance from his body, and Logan quickly slipped his hand into Virgil's, holding it close to him. "I'm gonna die, right?"
"You'll be okay." Logan repeated, sounding desperate and not at all like the normal Logan that Virgil knew. At least it was better than him being angry and continuing to try to get revenge on Lee. "I'm so sorry, Virgil."
"Why're you... sorry..?" Virgil frowned, words getting harder with every second passing. He coughed into his fist-the hand Logan wasn't holding-and when he finally stopped to draw in a shaky breath he saw red splattered onto his knuckles.
"I shouldn't have dragged you into all of this." Logan whispered softly. He had enjoyed feeling Virgil's warmth when they held hands-and when they kissed what felt like seconds ago-but the hand Logan held in his own was quickly becoming cold like his own hands. "You-you wouldn't be hurt right now if I didn't-didn't..."
"Shut up," Virgil hissed, squeezing as Logan's hand. "Love you. Kiss me."
Logan did as Virgil asked, leaning down and meeting his lips with his own. It lasted longer than their first one, and it was nice.
"You're going to be okay." Logan whispered after he pulled away again, more trying to reassure himself than anyone else. Virgil nodded up at him. They would both be okay.
He looked over to where Patton and Roman were sitting at his sides, just watching the pair worriedly. They both had tears in their eyes, also clearly worried for their friend.
"You guys... you're the best." Virgil muttered, looking at both of them and managing a small smile. Neither of them liked how much these seemed like last words, but they didn't mention it.
"And you're the best to us, too." Roman assured him, smiling back weakly.
"You're a hero." Patton sniffled. He couldn't force himself to smile, but Virgil understood. "Logan and his family can finally have some closure because of you."
"You're a great detective." Roman added on.
"Thanks... you guys..." Virgil breathed out, eyes slipping closed despite wanting to say so much more to his best friends. He didn't want this to be it. He needed more time, to give a proper goodbye.
They were all surprised to hear the sound of sirens already approaching despite Roman only just making the call. The police would arrive very soon to arrest Lee and Christopher Sheridan, and so would an ambulance for Virgil.
The ambulance would get there too late.
