It was so silent for the few moments after Logan disappeared that it seemed like none of the students were even breathing. It felt like forever for Virgil, waiting for Logan to come back, hoping that he was okay. Hoping that he wasn't going to attack Christopher.
Relief flooded through Virgil when he felt the familiar cold in front of him, letting out his breath in a sigh. "What did you see? Is it him?"
"It is definitely him." Logan said, a hint of aggression in his tone. When he spoke again standing by Virgil he sounded much calmer. "He was crying, and looking at the floor. I... He has to be the one. Why else would he be here, and crying?"
"Let's not jump to conclusions here, Logan." Patton spoke up, frowning. "We could still be wrong. That's why we're just going to ask him questions, and not assume he did it. We don't want a repeat of last time."
"Yes, of course." Logan agreed. "I am going to keep a level head this time."
"Well... I guess we should probably head in there, then." Roman said, gesturing to the door and being the first to step up to it. "Everyone ready?"
Receiving nods from Patton and Virgil and a verbal agreement from Logan, Roman turned back to the door and rested his hands against it. He paused for only a moment, and then he was pushing the doors open and allowing them to file their way inside.
Virgil looked up at Christopher as they entered, finding the man staring at them in shock before swiping at his eyes, turning around quickly and trying to make it seem like he was using the sink. He felt Logan beside of him, air colder than normal, lifting his hand to get Logan's attention. Logan took his hand, and that was when Virgil found the courage to step closer to the potential murderer.
"Christopher Sheridan?" He questioned, seeing the man freeze in front of him. He watched him blink twice in the mirror, slowly turning the tap off and turning around to face the teenager, hands braced on the sink behind him. Virgil allowed himself to study the man closer, taking note of the tear streaks and dark bags beneath his eyes almost rivaling his own. His black hair was long and unkempt, it looked like the man hadn't showered recently. Or eaten. He was all flesh and bones under the baggy red jacket he was wearing and overall, he just looked unsettling.
"How do you know my name?" He asked, voice brittle. He definitely didn't look like the type to be a bully in high school. He seemed more like the one to get bullied.
"We've heard about you from a teacher here." Roman spoke next, stepping up next to Virgil and gaining the man's focus.
"We wanted to ask you some questions." Patton said. Christopher's eyes darted between the three of them, frown on his lips.
"What kind of questions? Are you three even supposed to be here?"
"Did you know a Logan Sanders when you were going here?" Virgil took over again, meeting Christopher's eyes. The man's eyes widened, staring back at Virgil before his eyes darted to the floor, likely to where Logan had said he was looking before.
"Wh-why are you asking me this?" He stuttered, hands still gripping the sink behind him shaking now.
"We know that Logan was killed at this school by another student. In this same room." Virgil pressed on, flinching slightly when Christopher's eyes locked back onto him, narrowed in anger. Logan squeezed his hand, and Virgil knew Christopher wouldn't be able to hurt him. He continued. "Was that student you?"
"Of-Of course n-what are you-why would... you're just a teenager, why are you asking around about this?" Christopher stood a little straighter, as if trying to be intimidating. He looked far too scared to actually be intimidating.
"Did you kill Logan Sanders?" Virgil asked again, staring straight into Christopher's eyes.
"I don't have to answer anything you say. You're just a kid." Christopher spoke more to himself than anything, finally letting go of the sink and beginning to walk towards the door of the bathroom. He froze a few feet away from where Virgil was standing, and Virgil felt Logan let go of his hand.
"What the fuck?" Christopher hissed, looking down towards his feet that weren't moving. He looked up at them again, only to find something else standing between him and the teenagers. Logan was slowly becoming more and more visible, Christopher staring at him for a moment in shock before he cursed again, looking back at his legs and begging them to move.
"Will you answer me?" Logan said when he was finally fully formed, gaining the attention of Christopher again who was hyperventilating at this point.
"This isn't real, this isn't real," Christopher shook his head and squeezed his eyes closed, repeating this mantra over and over. "Another nightmare, it's just another nightmare."
"You have nightmares like this often?" Logan questioned, stepping closer to Christopher. Virgil stepped up with him, putting a hand on his shoulder and getting him to meet his eyes. Virgil looked worried, so Logan took his hand and squeezed, eyes softening in a promise that he was fine. He could handle this without hurting Christopher. He turned back to the man in question who was closing his eyes and muttering to himself.
"Christopher." Logan said, the man's mouth snapping shut and his eyes opening to meet Logan. "This isn't a dream."
Christopher whimpered, tears filling his eyes once more and spilling down his cheeks rapidly. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. It was an accident, I'm so sorry, please don't hurt me... I didn't mean to, I swear!"
"What was an accident?" Patton asked him this time, voice quiet. They needed confirmation. Another whimper came from Christopher.
"I didn't mean to kill you!"
Silence filled the room aside from the sniffles and cries of apologies from Christopher, from Logan's killer. The four of them stared at Christopher in complete shock, unsure where to go from here. They finally found him.
"What happened?" Logan asked, voice surprisingly calm despite being faced with Christopher.
"I was just going to the bathroom," Christopher began, voice shaking. "You were there. Just washing your hands, and I-I was just... I just did what I always did."
As Christopher spoke Logan found himself going back in time, back to that moment. He could see the sink in front of him, could hear the door swinging open behind him. Unlike the time he was remembering this in the library Logan's memories continued, matching up with Christopher's explanation.
He turned around after he had dried his hands with the paper towels, finding Christopher-a much younger, stronger, healthier version-staring straight at him. Logan immediately felt his blood run cold, looking last him towards the exit. The exist that Christopher was blocking. Logan wasn't getting out of here without a fight.
Logan sighed, meeting Christopher's eyes with a frown. "What do you want now?"
"Oh wow, you sound so brave." Christopher taunted him, sneer on his lips. "I don't want anything, actually."
Logan knew better than to be relieved just yet. He kept his eyes on Christopher, doing his best to sidestep around him and closer to the door. "Great. Can I go then?"
"Careful there," Christopher snapped, glaring and balling his hands into fists at his sides. "Unless you just want to get your ass beat."
Logan stopped moving, now standing between Christopher and one of the opened stalls. The door was just feet away, but he wasn't about to make a run for it in case Christopher changed his mind. He stopped, waiting for Christopher to move to use the toilets instead. When Christopher chose to stand and stare at him instead Logan started to get impatient.
"Well? Are you going to use the bathroom or are you going to make us both late for class as usual?" Logan questioned, almost immediately regretting opening his mouth at the look he received from Christopher.
"You really just want me to kick your ass," Christopher took a step towards him, fist at his side coming up to take a swing at Logan's face. Startled, Logan jumped back, once again regretting the choice as he knew it would just make Christopher even more mad. As expected, Christopher cursed at him, and Logan fought the urge to block the next blow that came at him.
What a terrible idea that was.
Christopher's fist met with Logan's cheek, sending him backwards and into the stall behind him. As he fell backwards he caught a flash of silver, felt a terrible pain on his forehead, and saw his vision turn red.
He could tell that he was bleeding bad, could feel the hot liquid cascading down his forehead, sticking to his hair and his clothes and dripping off of him onto the floor. He was shocked, unable to move, or scream, or cry. He just laid there, eyes squeezed shut and blood pooling around him.
It took a moment before the pain set in.
The pain was excruciating, worse than anything he had ever felt in his entire life. And yet, he still didn't scream or do anything. He just couldn't move.
In the background he could hear the panicked voice of Christopher calling his name a few times with no answer. He heard an excessive amount of curses from the other student, and then the ringing of a cell phone. It took a minute before Christopher spoke up again-saying the last thing Logan would ever hear while he was alive.
"Dad," Christopher choked out, standing at Logan's feet. "I fucked up."
