The Cost
Hyde Higgins and Josh Adams were trying to scare Willem, Hyde's little brother, and Fiona Castro, Josh's girlfriend. They were spending a lot of time at Josh's house because Hyde and Willem's mom and dad, Janice and John Higgins, were acting strange lately.
Hyde guessed they were getting ready for a divorce or something. They were acting weird. They fought and Willem was always in the middle. He swore that he never knew what the problem was and Hyde stayed out of it. He didn't like all of the arguing. Willem never stepped a foot inside the house and their mom never left it when Willem was there. They argued through the door.
Hyde had no idea what was going on, so he stayed away. Hyde wanted to give his little brother a night out so Hyde sneaked Willem out of his friend's house.
Willem had been staying at his weird friend's house. No one would talk about what happened so Hyde was in the dark. He missed his little brother and thought he deserved a break. Hyde was leaving for college in a few weeks and wanted to spend some time with Willem.
They decided to go to the old Miller house on a dare. There were rumors that it was haunted. Willem was showing them a web show, some guy, Reid, actually came out and did an ghost hunting episode on it.
They found evidence that the house was haunted. A lot of weird sounds and EMF noises. EMF was short for Electromagnetic Field, that is how the spectral hunters or ghost hunters, find ghosts or the instruments they use to measure the energy that the ghosts put off. Hyde watched a lot of ghost shows, he loved all of that supernatural stuff.
He wasn't for sure how that all worked but he loved the shows. The hunter, Reid, even caught a ghost image walking around the Miller house.
Everyone in town was excited and it was quickly becoming a tourist attraction, but no one went at night. They said someone disappeared there in the eighties but Hyde thought that was an urban legend.
Hyde like the Lloyd Brothers much better. They were spectral hunters because the title of ghost hunters was taken but the Lloyd Brothers were much better. Hyde thought it was great because the Lloyd Brothers would help send the ghosts to the other side.
Vanquish them. Or something. They would hunt them and kill them or set them free. He wasn't sure that ghosts could die. They wanted to do a little ghost hunting and scare his little brother. He wanted some memories before he left for college.
Looking back, he wished they had stayed away.
They dared each other all the way to the porch. Each step creaked. It was in the middle of the night, it was almost a full moon. Hyde didn't want to admit that he was frightened.
He really wanted to go home and play poker in the basement and maybe drink a beer. Their dad never said anything when one went missing and he couldn't report it because his dad wasn't supposed to be drinking it. That was a sin.
Hyde needed a beer after this. His nerves were shot. He laughed and made fun of Fiona and Willem for being afraid, mostly to cover his own fear. They were on the creepy porch. The wood groaned with each step.
Hyde and Josh were laughing and teasing them. They dared Willem to open the front door. Hyde began to make scary ghost sounds just for fun.
Willem looked at his brother and rolled his eyes. He didn't believe in ghosts and thought going into the haunted Miller house was stupid. He wasn't really scared just annoyed.
Josh made Fiona and Willem go first mostly because he was too scared but he would never admit that to anyone. He laughed at the others. Chickens. He made chicken noises as Willem walked into the front room of the house.
Willem expected to fall through the floor but it just creaked. He was ready to leave and be done with this. They had to stay in the house for fifteen minutes alone.
Fiona didn't want to do it but Willem was defiant so she was staying with him. She could do this. Maybe but she just didn't want to. This was stupid.
Josh and Hyde blocked the door from the outside, locking Willem and Fiona inside. She was dumping Josh when she got out of this house. She was furious.
They banged on the door but it didn't do any good. Those guys weren't going to open it until the time was up. Fiona stood by Willem and held his hand. She was scared.
Willem laughed. He wasn't scared of the house, ghosts or the dark. This was nothing for him. He wanted to look around and Fiona wanted to stay by the door but not alone.
There was no light except Willem's cell phone. She held onto Willem and she was looking around with him. She sure as hell wasn't staying alone.
They walked up the spooky stairs to the second floor. She knew they were falling through the floor at any moment. They made it down a hall and Willem wanted to check out the rooms.
He walked into the last room in the hall and Fiona wasn't quick enough. The door slammed behind him. Fiona screamed. She never touched the door. Willem turned to see who closed the door and everything went dark.
Fiona ran to the stairs and flung herself out the front door. She kept running and Josh had a tough time catching her. He calmed her down and finally got the information.
Willem was locked in a room upstairs. Hyde was annoyed and threatened to leave Willem if he didn't come out. He stormed up the stairs to the last room in the hall. The door was open and the room was empty.
Hyde felt panic. He yelled for Willem and threatened him again. He ran to each room and searched the house. His fear turned to panic when he couldn't find Willem. Where in the hell could he have gone?
