7 Kate's POV
RING RING RING RING RING RING
I hit the off button and jump out of bed. 5:30am, a bit late, but oh well. Today will be a good day. I can just feel it. I brush my teeth, eat breakfast, then run back upstairs. I had a lot of work to do.
I opened up my Physics textbook to page 200. Our class were on page 50, but that didn't matter- I was very ahead. I grabbed a pen and looked at the topic-- Hydraulics. It was very hard. I loved it.
After only 2 hours of work, I had to go to school. I couldn't miss the maths club at 8am!
I got to school, left my bag in my form room, and walked to room 500, where maths club is held, every Friday. This school week has gone so fast! It's already Friday!
I quicken my pace as I look at my watch. I only have 34 more seconds to get there. Uh oh. I need to speed up. I shouldn't have passed mum's offer to drive me to school. Urgh.
Finally. The door handle. I grip it and push the door open, to see around 30 pairs of eyes attacking me. I glanced at my watch quickly. Dang it. I'm 13 seconds late.
"You're late, Kate" Mr Data declares, his voice booming through the corridors. I couldn't help but smile at the rhyme. Big mistake
"I don't see anything funny in that, Kathryn" he responds.
"Sorry I'm late sir. I can still do my presentation, I'm still very prepared and-" I say, just before I get cut off.
"You're not doing your presentation anymore." He says, interrupting me.
"Pardon?" No way am I 'not doing my presentation anymore'. I worked forever on that!
"You heard me. You're. Not. Doing. Your. Presentation. Got it? Good." He replies, smiling, making me look like a complete idiot. I hear a snigger from the back of the classroom.
I take a deep breath.
"What do I do then? Should I just go home?" I asked, rather annoyed now.
"No, of course not. Tara here is going to do hers"
In case you're wondering 'Why is Tara at maths club?', let me explain. When she was a 'nerd', she was in maths club, and now she's not allowed to leave.
I hear Tara's laugh from the back of the room. Her laugh sounds like a literal witch. It's not even laugh- it is like a demonic cackle. It's hard to describe. But if you heard it, you'd probably think it was Satan. But then the laughing stops.
"Wait. My presentation? You want me? To do my presentation?" Tara questions, her face completely shocked.
Now it was my turn to laugh. I kept it inside though, the last thing I needed was to get into more trouble.
Mr Data forced Tara to get up and do her presentation. I took a seat.
It was hilarious. She knew nothing. At all. She had to talk about quadratics- and at some point, I'm pretty sure I heard her say that one add one was three. I can't believe I almost missed this! And that I didn't bring popcorn!
It went wayyyyy to fast. Before I knew it, maths club was finished, and now it was time for normal lessons. I was silly not to expect Tara to do something to me. For laughing at her. She tripped me up my the door. Typical.
The first lesson was People Studies. We didn't really learn anything that useful. I would do less work and not try as much, but our People Studies teacher was my English Teacher. I would have to at least try a bit.
Today the topic was the LGBTQ community. I'm not going to tell you everything that we learnt- it is way too much information. It was just like a normal lesson really. The same people messing around, and the teachers' pets sucking up, as per usual. However, one thing was different. At first I couldn't lay my finger on it. But then I realised. For a start, Jada and Kathy were not in school (they probably bunked)- but the main difference was Tara. She was.....Contributing. Regularly.
No. Could this mean--Tara was going back to the old her? That would be weird.
Oh, she's still her. She's chewing gum, her skirt is rolled up super high, and she's on her phone under the table.
But wow. Tara. Contributing. Maybe she just feels really strongly about this topic or something.
I'm not going to lie. Today's lesson gave me a whole new perspective on the LGBTQ community. I feel like I can look up to them. They are clearly very strong people. I guess People Studies is more important than I thought.
Next lesson was Physics. I knew everything already- so it was fine. Plus- there was no Tara- she's in set 10(the lowest one).
After that it was lunch. The bell rang and everyone went outside. The corridor was very cramped and damp. Ew. I can't wait until I'm in 6th form, when I can escape this hellhole at lunch, and go somewhere else. Don't get me wrong, school is beautiful- but lunchtimes are horrible. There are many reasons why it is horrible. But the main one is Tara.
Our lunch break is one hour. I turned on my iPad and read a bit. It was a story about a gay couple. Half an hour must have passed, but there was no sign of Tara. It was weird. I don't miss her, but at the same time, I kind of did. It was normal for her to be pestering me, and I guess I've kinda gotten used to it now.
10 more minutes passed. This was weird.
Another 5 minutes passed and I was greeted with Tara, sitting beside me. She scared me. I was so into reading my book.
"It's a good book"
Wait what?!
Tara. Talking to me.
"Ummm, yeah?" I responded
"Carry on reading it, let me know what you think when you're done" she said
"Okay" I said, confused about why she would even care as she walked away.
"Um Tara? Are you... Feeling okay?" I asked. I had to.
"Yeah, why?"
"You were actually paying attention last lesson-and.... Contributing. And now you're talking to me..." I said
"Can't I feel passionately about a subject? I swear you were into it too?..."
Okay what. Tara, interested in a subject.
I shuddered.
"Well yeah I guess so. That's why I'm reading this book."
"That's the reason why I read it too. Let me know if it changes you. It changed me." She said, now actually turning around and leaving.
I couldn't help but let out a gasp when I saw her shirt. It said 'gay and proud' on the back.
Did Tara just come out to me?
I couldn't think for much longer- because then the bell rang.
But all through my free period, and whilst walking home- I couldn't help but look at myself too.
I had to finish that book. maybe it could change me.
