Chapter 23

That morning, I woke up to the familiar smell of cigarettes and lemons. I couldn't help but smile at the way Noah pressed me(or my back, to be exact) against his hard chest by holding my waist tightly. I couldn't help but smile at the way his hot peaceful breaths blended almost perfectly with my fast ones.

I found myself replaying the fight we had last night which completely crushed my heart, then his surprising birthday declaration, which repaired some of the damage. And on top of that, the moment when I laid my head on his shoulder after we played video games, and he didn't push me away. Instead, Noah wrapped his arm around me and drew me closer to him.

We ended up sleeping on the black couch.

Yet, the image of his face when he wakes up and notices me next to him refused to give me any peace. I figured that the last thing I wanted was to see his unhappy expression once he finds out about the fact that his skin cells touched mine over-night.

He did open up a few hours ago, but I doubt that he likes me now, after everything we had to go through with one another.

So I decided to leave him on the black couch and let him get some sleep.

He can't suffer from the lack of sleep when I tell him about my plan. The brilliant plan I came up with while sitting on the kitchen table and drinking my dark coffee.

"Hey," Noah's morning, deep voice filled the kitchen with sudden tension.

"Hey," I smiled at him nervously before I took another sip from the burning liquid.

"Why didn't you stay?" he pointed at the living room while I moved my legs around the empty air and tried to focus on breathing normally.

Did he want me to stay with him?

"I needed some caffeine," I mumbled and moved my gaze down to the blue cup I held.

Meanwhile, Noah moved around the kitchen, determined to copy my idea, and make himself a cup of coffee. Once he was done, he came to stand in front of me with his own blue cup. Even with the help of the tall kitchen table, he still managed to tower over me.

"I was thinking," I started telling him about my splendid plan.

"That's never good," he cut me off sharply. However, I had to remind myself that I rather face his sarcasm than face his indifference.

"Shut up! So, I decided that we are going to celebrate your birthday today!" I finally revealed the plan, feeling like the smartest person on earth.

"You are making me uncomfortable, princess. I already told you that relationships aren't my thing, and now you are asking me out on a date," he shook his head, and I was overwhelmed by his second sarcastic comment of the day.

"Don't flatter yourself. It's most definitely not a date."

"Where are we going?"

"It's a surprise," I claimed as he raised his eyebrow, clearly doubting my intentions now.

"Jacob will join us," I added quickly, deciding not to give him the satisfaction he was unquestionably looking for.

"Taking your little brother to hide the fact that it's a date. Smart move, princess," Noah chuckled evilly as I tried to keep my temper to myself.

Unfortunately for me, Noah Adams decided to act even more annoying than usual on the day we were supposed to hang out.

"I will never force anyone to go on a date with me."

"By the end of the month, you, princess, will beg for a date with me."

"Will our imaginary date include going to an innocent cafe to order burgers?"

Images from the first time he entered Mer-Chocolate with his sour face(and a girl) made me smile wildly at him. For an unknown reason, the guy who suddenly seemed annoyed took a large step back from me.

"It's completely normal to order a burger at a cafe," he placed his blue cup inside the sink and turned to leave the kitchen, and me.

"We are leaving soon, so you better get ready," I called after him, feeling confused.

Give me a day without his confusing or annoying behavior, and I will love you for the rest of my life.

The warm breeze kept us some company as we watched Jacob play with the soft sand from afar. I was hypnotized by the sound of the ocean waves, leaning comfortably against a huge rock found behind me. Jacob's temperate finally went down, and so I felt like I could breathe again.

Noah's dark green eyes focused on my carefree expression (for some odd reason), but before I had the chance to ask him about it, I saw someone approaching Jacob.

"I will be right back."

The mineral practices and divided rocks made the distance feel much longer, but when I was close enough to the two kids, the air found his way back to my lungs.

The main character playing a role in an action movie would find it very suspicious that the same kid I saw approaching my little brother is actually his best friend.

I mean, what are the chances?

However, I, a random teenager who lives with a mysterious guy(or as I see him- another crush to add to the list of 'never going to happen'), wouldn't see anything wrong in the situation.

"Hey, Landler! Can I eat dinner with Daniel tonight?"

"I am making pasta for dinner. You can invite Daniel if you want."

"I rather go to his house to play with the swords," he explained truthfully.

I wish I could afford these freaking swords.

"Well then, I will have to discuss with Daniel's mother."

And just like that, Jacob was out of my sight ten minutes later. Ten, very long and exhausting minutes, in which I had to face his awful mother and act like I don't think at all about Noah's possible escape.

I thanked God after I saw him sitting at the same spot and waiting for me. I leaned against the huge rock once again, this time closing my dark brown eyes.

Multiple questions begged for my attention, but the biggest most interesting one was about the famous rumor back in Junior year. I opened my eyes and asked the question I have been wanting to ask ever since I saw him running next to my house.

"Were you in prison last year?"

When he took a deep breath and finally decided to share some personal information about his past, I was one hundred percent sure that the happiest person living on the planet was me.

"After my mother kicked me out almost three years ago, my only choice was to live with my grandparents. Things happened. I had to get out of there. When people thought I was in prison, I was busy working my ass off so I could afford my own place. I didn't have the time to show up in school. And to tell you the truth, I didn't fucking want to."

His soul is broken, and I never felt the need to fix a broken soul before that moment. I was certain that under his pain and misery, Noah's soul is the purest out of them all.

"Stop looking at me like you feel sorry for me."

"I don't feel sorry for you, Noah. I feel so damn proud."

Without any warning, Noah moved from his comfy spot on the dry sand and sat down in front of me on his knees. His beautiful green eyes never looked more bright and shiny. I could recognize every single emotion just by watching him closely.

He placed both of his hands on the rock behind me, and leaned closer to my lips, trapping me and my plans of escaping.

Kissing again would make everything so much more complicated, right?

But the fire I held inside my beating heart wasn't concerned by the stupid complications.

All I needed was him.

His addicting lips finally crashed into mine, and my heart exploded from the realization of how strong and deep my feelings were for that guy.

His lips were soft, so soft that I felt like I could drown in them.

Drown in him.

I kissed him back with all I had, but before I had the chance to bring him any closer to my hungry lips, he backed away, confusion written all over his face.

"It feels familiar, your lips. I kissed you before, didn't I?"

Freak, why does he have to remember?

"When?" he asked impatiently when I stayed quiet, lost in my own thoughts.

"The night of the party. You-you were drunk, and I took you back home and-and I gave you some water, and then you-you just kissed me."

My hands were shaking while I mumbled the brief explanation, which made him lose it completely. He clenched his fists and burned me to ashes with his furious look.

Noah Adams turned cold again, perfect.

"It's not going to happen again, so please don't fucking get your hopes up."
