Chapter 22
Pete drove to the graveyard as fast as he could after getting the location from Porsche. Even though he was confused as to why was Vegas in the graveyard, he didn't want to waste his time asking questions.
"It's better if Vegas' the one who reveals the reason behind his actions" was what he thought.
He pulled over into an empty parking lot present adjacent to the graveyard and dashed inside.
However, the scene that he saw inside the place broke his heart.
Vegas was crouching beside a gravestone. His face looked gloomier than the gloomiest days and his eyes held unending helplessness. The helplessness one feels when they are unable to let go of a painful memory. The vegas that Pete could see through his eyes at the moment looked incredibly lonely, as if he had no one left in the world that he could place in trust in.
His eyes were bloodshot, as if he wanted to cry but he wasn't capable of doing so.
"Why do you look like that?" Pete asked in a remorseful voice making him look up.
"Go away" Vegas shooed him in a disheartened voice before fixating his gaze back on the ground.
"No. You need me right now" Pete said strictly but he denied the claims.
"I don't." He said.
"But to me it seems like you do. Your stubborn self may not need me, but your vulnerable self does." Pete said trying to convince him but accidentally triggered him instead.
"I don't have a vulnerable self. Pete, please, I don't want to be mean to you so please get....ge-get out of here." Vegas said trying to avoid looking into Pete's eyes.
"No matter how much you try to convince your self and me that that's what you truly want, I am not going anywhere." Pete said again and instead of opposing Vegas anymore by words, hugged him since he looked like he definitely needed one.
"Get away" Vegas squirmed but didn't try to push Pete away.
"No" Pete refused before tightening his hold around Vegas' body.
"Go Away! G..o A...way..." His struggles ended as his protests subsided and soft sniffles took their place.
His body started shaking vigorously as time went by and throughout the crying session Pete made sure to not break the embrace for even a second.
Pete's POV:
Vegas kept crying his heart out. Perhaps the sadness of such a terrible incident and the misery of having to bury it had been eating him up for such a long time that getting a little support crumbled him completely.
Afterall, the loss of a parent, not to mention his beloved mother could have never been an easy news.
I didn't want to believe that it was his mother's death anniversary but the inscription carved on the tombstone had left me with no choice but to accept the reality.
"Why did he have to do that? Why did he have to betray me like that? I trusted him, I simply trusted the one I once called my brother, why did he have to do that? Mae did so much for him...always thought of him like her own son...was always there for him...always loved him more than me...why couldn't he atleast honour her trust and love?" He screeched into my shoulder. The desperation in his voice and the trembles in his body were scarring away my heart layer by layer but all I could do at the moment was silently support him and listen to him.
After about half an hour when I was sure that my shirt was partially drenched with his tears, the sniffles and hiccups subsided and he snuggled into my shoulder, reluctant to let me see his face.
"Look at me." I said but he shook his head in refusal.
"Baby look at me. Please" I requested again in a softer tone and cupping his face brought it to my eye level.
"Woah...you could solve global water problem with that" I chuckled softly to lighten the atmosphere.
"You're terrible at making jokes" He giggled through his remnant tears.
"Still managed to make you laugh" I joked back.
"There there...a little better now?" I asked as I wiped his drenched face with the hem of my long-sleeve.
"You want water?" I kissed his forehead to comfort both our hearts that were filled with anxiety.
"No" He whispered before slumping against my shoulder.
"Let's go back" Vegas suggested.
"Where?" I asked feeling a little confused.
"Home" He whispered.
"Minor House" He lifted his gaze and said with determination.
There were a lot of questions running through my mind that I wanted to get an answer to but it wasn't the right time to ask those.
"Let's go then" I clasped our hands and got up from the ground before helping him to get up as well. I had previously never been to minor family and the only information I had about it was that it was being managed by the current head of Teerpanyakul family - Korn Teerpanyakul.
According to the long standing ritual of Teerpanyakul Family, the heir of the major family could only inherit it after getting married while there was another added condition for inheriting the minor family. Even after getting married, the minor family heir could only inherit the position after the heir of the major family has already occupied their position as the head.
Due to this, even after getting married to me, Vegas was unable to become the head of the minor family as P'Kinn was yet to marry.
Just as I was running the history of the family through my mind, we pulled over in the parking lot of the mansion.
Even though I had been adamant on driving, Vegas insisted that he was in the right mind to safely drive us to the mansion.
He was looking better on our drive to the house but as soon as we parked the car, he noticed another car occupying the far end of the garage and his expressions transitioned to one of rage.
"Vegas what's wrong?" I was worried to say the least due to the sudden change but ignoring me, he slammed the car's door and rushed into the building.
"Vegas!!!" I yelled his name but there were no replies. It was as if something had made him to lose his mind. Upon looking towards the same direction that had caused Vegas to behave as such, I noticed P' Kinn's car standing in the garage. Even though I knew how terrible of a bond they shared due to reasons unknown to me, they had never confronted each other upfront priorly. Vegas mostly preferred to ignore him while P'Kinn always looked highly regretful at such times.
I followed him and dashed as fast as I could. I kept yelling his name out loud but none of them were heard. The minor family bodyguards looked too terrified to approach Vegas.
On the second floor, he turned and disappeared into a room closely followed by me entering through the door and the scene I witnessed was incomprehensible. Vegas was holding P'Kinn up by his collar and before I could pull him back, he landed a punch on P'Kinn's face making him stumble. His lip was split and he looked like he had tried his best to hold back his reflexes to not hit vegas back.
"Stop!" I screamed and ran to Vegas' side.
"Calm down" I held his face with trembling hands. I was not sure if it was the anxiousness that I felt for him or the slight terror I felt after seeing him going feral in pure rage that caused my hands to tremble but it helped to calm him down a little.
His eyes reflected how hurt he was, how much he probably wanted to nullify my requests and vent out the anger that was gulping him down but he still was trying the best he could to hold himself back.
"Don't do something you'll regret later" I whispered to him in a shaky voice. Vegas couldn't protest seeing my tear-filled eyes and had to refrain from getting into a scuffle with P'Kinn.
"P'Kinn..." I uttered while looking at him but found myself at a loss for words but thankfully he understood what I was trying to convey and got up to leave after nodding slightly.
"Thank you for being with him" He said in an incoherent whisper that barely reached my ears.
Once he was gone, Vegas broke my clasp around his hand and went towards the potrait of his mother that was kept in the middle of the room. There were lit incense sticks near the potrait along with a few other things to pay respect to the deceased.
Vegas sat down by it without uttering a single word. It was a much needed silence for him and I didn't dare to utter a word. The atmosphere felt serene and without making any noise, I went forward to sit beside him. He noticed my presence and laying a little back, kept his head on my shoulder while one his hands were resting on the table, close to the potrait.
We sat there in complete silence for a while and finally after some unrecorded time, he got up.
"Are you sure you're ready to go now?" I asked feeling a little troubled if he wanted to stay longer and was being forced to go back because of me.
"We can't stay here forever, can we?" He said with a painful smile and kissed my hand to reassure me that there was no reason for me to feel so troubled.
"Still...do you want to stay here for just today maybe?" I proposed since he didn't look like he had the slightest will to go back to Teerpanyakul residence.
He agreed to it after a little reconsideration and the house staff were immediately informed about it. His room was opened and even though there was not even a speck of dust inside it, it looked as if it had not been inhabited for quite a long time.
"Do you not come here often?" I asked looking back at him.
"No" He gave a curt reply.
"When was the last time you were here?" I asked feeling a little nervous about his slightly changing demeanor.
"Seven years ago...a few days after mae was murdered..." He said and the reply took me by shock.
As a teenager, I had always heard from him about how great of a person his mother was and hearing him brag so much, I had always yearned to experience such selfless love. Thus, I had not imagined that even she could have enemies bloodthirsty enough to kill someone as innocent as her.
"Who...killed her?" I asked sub-consciously and regretted it immediately because of how inappropriate and insensitive of a question it was but unexpectedly got an answer.
He gulped hard before uttering the name, as if he didn't want to take it in the first place. The look on his face turned into one of regret and disgust as he went on to reveal the name of the murderer.
"Kinn.." He said and my mind went blank.
"P'Kinn? Are you sure that you are not mistaken?" I was about to blurt out but stopped myself at the right time.
"...Mae...Mae died because of him. HE MURDERED HER!! She treated him like her own son yet he proved that he was undeserving of it all!" Vegas turned away in disgust.
I was having a hard time believing that P'Kinn could do something like that but Vegas had no reason to lie either.
"The tongue can lie relentlessly, mind can lie without a second thought but it is the eyes that reflect the soul. It is the eyes that reflect the truth."
And from how hurt his eyes portrayed that he was, there was no way in heaven or hell that he was lying.
Hence, my heart and mind were both conflicted. On one hand I wanted to believe Vegas blindly but on the other, I could not bring myself to believe that P'Kinn could do it. Afterall, no matter how fierce of a man he was in the mafia world, he was also a family man in the end, his desire to live in a happy united family was visible on his face everytime he saw the family members.
"Perhaps...this is not as simple and straight of an incident as it looks like."
I thought as I clenched my fists, determined to bring forth the truth out of P'Kinn and anyone else involved.
