Chapter 13
After a whole daunting hour or so they finally stopped at the the final place. Pete heard Charlie's footsteps approaching the trunk and pretended to be unconscious to look for a gap.
The trunk door opened but in came no sunlight. It was already past evening somewhere around 7 or so and with each passing moment his desperation to escape was increasing. Afterall, maybe no one back home had any idea of his whereabouts and in such a situation they were bound to get worried. Not to mention things could get extremely out of hand if his father was to know of the whole thing.
Even though he was already old enough, he was still afraid of his father locking him away in some insignificant corner of the house like he had done years ago, to punish him for trying to run away. He was left there to starve, and the dark room filled with noises of the hungry mice running around weren't helping at all but that however wasn't even the worst part of the story.
"I need to get back as soon as possible. Agh I don't even know if he still has my phone under his possession or if he has already thrown it away somewhere." He groaned internally in frustration.
Instead of Charlie, two other men lifted him up this time and carried him to a room that looked like one out of the movies where the victims are usually kept in.
After dumping him in the room and tying him again, they left him alone in there before locking the door behind them.
Pete's POV:
I opened my eyes after making sure that all the noises, the uneven breathing, the rigid footsteps had all drowned and got to work immediately.
I took the glass piece that I had hidden in one of my pant pockets that they couldn't get a hold of due to the pants being baggy and good at hiding stuff, and used it cut the ropes.
The glass piece had lightly pierced my thigh but that was my least concern in a situation where I was trapped in a human trafficking ring and was their next victim.
After setting myself free, I got up to my feet and had never been more thankful to my light steps that made negligible noise while walking.
There was a concrete overhead slab (Writer's note: the one you see in homes, on which usually discarded items are kept)
beside a small window closed with a plastic net. Since there were no other windows in the room, I decided to see where it lead to.
Unfortunately, there weren't any chairs or boxes that could be used to climb to the slab.
"I have to run with full force and jump into the wall to push myself upwards and catch the edge of the slab" I revised my plan in my head.
I couldn't risk making any noise hence, I took off my shoes which were bound to cause sounds during the whole endeavour of running and jumping into the wall. The socks had to ofcourse come off as well to refrain me from slipping, hitting my head against something and dying in the process.
I hid them away after making sure that no one was coming in the direction of the room and started counting.
"At the count of three" I nodded and the moment I reached three, I shot myself horizontally and jumped into the wall before pushing myself up, against the wall with as much force as I could use and thankfully got a hold of the slab.
I sighed it and lifted myself up before crouching beside the window. Peeping into the other room, I found no presence inside it.
The net that was used to cover the medium-sized opening into the next room was plastic due to which, it could be broken with a little pressure.
I started agitating it constantly by compressing and stretching it continuously to push it beyond it's stretchability leading to its eventual breakage.
The whole thing ofcourse didn't break but I was able to detach a part of it, just enough to allow me to pass through it. The edges were still sharp so I had to take special care to not have my clothes stuck in it. But in the end, I succeeded in changing my location to the next room.
There was a window in the one I had just entered, which well was just a rectangle in the wall with no covers to close it.
I went close to it and looked around to see if there was anyone near the window while being as sleek as I could.
Since it was dark already, neither could I, nor could they quite catch me peeping through the window which sure felt like a disadvantage at first but then a bodyguard appeared from the far end corner of the building.
"Looks like there aren't many people guarding this side." I thought to myself.
I had tightly shut my mouth to refrain myself from even accidentally uttering out my thoughts and possibly alerting the captivators and was trying my best to not make any sound since the whole forest behind the building was completely silent and even a small noise could be heard in the incredibly-silent surroundings. There was a road on the other side but no vehicles were passing through it.
"I just have to get down, run through the forest and get to that road. From there I will run as far as possible till I come across anyone known or a police station." I thought as I waited for the gaurd on the round to pass.
"The gaurds come around roughly every 2 minutes, so I have to anyhow get down and reach the forest before anyone sees me." I planned.
The layer of trees were about 40 metres away from the building and there was a good chance of getting away within the stipulated time.
The security seemed a bit too lax for a trafficking ring but then I lined up all the activities that I was required to do in order to get away.
They likely targetted only the soft-looking people who look like they have never received any sort of training to escape such situations and are bound to have a breakdown thus crumbling down their ability to escape.
Maybe that is why they did not see the need to keep a tight security. Moreover, this place looks so secluded, I don't think anyone would be able to get any help unless they make an escape themselves and run till they find someone suitable who would be able to save them.
As the shadow of the gaurd subsided, minding my steps and keeping the hold firm, I got down to a slab carefully that was present maybe at a height of a metre from the ground.
I crouched and holding the edge of it, got down to a hanging position before shifting my body weight, letting go of it, and landing on the ground as inconspicuously as I could.
I was about to make a run for the forest but at that immediate moment a shadow came into my vision meaning a bodyguard was on his way to the side I was on.
"The hell it's not even been 2 minutes yet" I was irritated out of my wits but still tried to get away to prevent the failure of my plan. However, he came into my direct sight before I could I do it.
Having no other chance, I pulled him towards me and with a swift movement broke his neck thus killing him almost instantly. He barely had any time to react and even though I did not want to do it, I had no other choice except killing him.
But as I had thought that I was finally free to run away, another one followed the now dead guard's trail and attacked me upon seeing his dead body.
But thankfully I was able to dodge his attack and smashed his head into the wall knocking him out, but in the process I forgot to keep an eye on my surroundings. Barely had I knocked him out when I saw another one standing at a distance who pulled the trigger of his gun, thus creating a loud noise. It grazed past the sleeve of my thick shirt ripping a piece of the fabric but failing to reach my skin.
"F*CK!!" I cursed out as I snatched the gun that the first bodygard was carrying and without missing the mark killed the man. But of course the loud noise had already warned everyone and I had no time to waste anymore. I ran as fast as I could and entered the forest with a number of footsteps running towards the side I previously was on.
A number of steps entered the forest behind me and even though I was using the big trees like a cover to shield me while running I was praying desperately to not get caught.
I kept glancing back to see if they were still following me and they actually were even though they had not yet succeeded in locating where I was.
Eventually I was out of the forest but forgot to check if the road was empty. I was still looking back and the moment I looked forward I saw a car coming but it was too late to stop myself.
Thankfully the driver stopped the car right at the perfect time but I clashed with it. My body hovered over the bonet as I rolled and fell down on the road.
If the bleeding feet weren't enough, my leg also got injured. I groaned in frustration and struck the ground in resentment feeling like everything was over. But right then, a ray of hope shined.
The driver of the car got out and ran to my side.
"Pete? Thank god you are still alive!!" He said and I looked up to see Porsche towering infront of me with a concerned yet relieved expression.
"I won't be anymore if we stall here for any longer!" I whispered screamed as I signed him to pick me up. He helped me to the seat beside the driver and himself getting into the driver's seat, hit the accelerator to the max.
"DRIVE! DRIVE! DRIVE" I screamed as I saw the men coming closer and in a second we shot through like a bullet.
They started firing at us but barely a bullet or two hit a few parts of the car before we were out of their target range.
I sighed in relief as I slumped back on the seat completely tired from all I had to go through. My hands were still shaking terribly and my breathing was erratic.
"I thought you wouldn't notice that I was gone" I said while trying to catch my breath.
"Well, you wore the hoodie with the tracker on, moreover at around 6 I got a report regarding Charlie's past and turns out he has been using a fake name. There were a few cases in his name but all got dropped. So I immediately checked to see where you were and found that you were travelling along the outskirts, on the unfrequented roads. I tried to call you a number of times but you didn't pick so I got anxious and drove here as fast as I could." Porsche said while not taking his eyes off the road.
Flashback:
A few days ago:
After meeting Charlie, even though Porsche was supporting him infront of Vegas to make him jealous, he wasn't exactly in his favour because of the suspicious energy he radiated.
"I think I should keep an eye on Charlie" Porsche announced.
"I don't think he's right for Pete." I said to Kinn.
"C'mon you are overthinking, I don't think there's any need of doing that. You are probably feeling the way because of how much you are protective of Pete." He tried to dismiss the concern but Tankhun came to the support.
"I think Porsche's concern is valid" He said while entering the room.
"He definitely is suspicious. He smells of it, too shady to be actually be a good person." Tankhun said making Kinn and Porsche look at each other.
Tankhun always had a good eye for judging people so Kinn could no longer deny the validity of Porsche's concern.
"I think I should just keep an eye on Pete to make sure that he's safe. Meanwhile, I should also try to find out more about Charlie". Porsche informed them about his decision and both the men agreed to it.
A day later:
Porsche came to Pete holding a good looking, thick hoodie very much capable of beating cold.
"One of the buttons contain a tracker, wear this whenever you are about to go to somewhere far, when you don't know the destination or if you are going somewhere with someone you don't trust completely. I am concerned for your safety." Porsche requested and Pete agreed to it.
Afterall, he liked it that someone was worried for him. His heart felt warm thinking about it and he decided to do as Porsche said to honour his genuine concern for him.
Flashback Ends.
Pete's POV Ends.
Third Person POV:
Porsche noticed Pete's bare feet that were bleeding and asked him about it.
"I left my shoes back there to prevent them from exposing me and had to run through the forest barefoot." He said while struggling to keep his eyes open.
Pete soon fell asleep while Porsche kept driving and they did not make a stop anywhere on the way until they had to finally stop at a small dispensary.
Porsche tried to lift Pete to carry him inside but he insisted on walking.
With Porsche's support, they both went inside and treated Pete's injuries.
Porsche picked up a little food for both of them and they again started their journey back home after completing all the work.
Pete was finally feeling secure about getting to return to his safe space but he did not have even the slightest idea about what was waiting for him back home.
