Chapter Twelve

Jin waited until Jungkook had boarded the private jet, and then until the jet took off before he climbed into the car and drove out of the terminal. He turned on the stereo and let Cry Baby by The Neighborhood play softly in the car.

It was quiet with Jungkook gone. He could hear himself think properly without having to listen to the sounds of Jungkook's phone clicking with every tap. It was the most irritating sound, and he was glad to be rid of it for two days.

He needed a break from constantly worrying over Jungkook. With Jungkook around, he was always first. Jin had to think of him before taking any action. He had to know where Jungkook was at all times and had to be sure that it was safe for him to be there.

Every day before going to bed, he had to check that Jungkook was in his room. Jungkook always hated whenever Jin showed up at his massive twin doors, but Jin didn't care for the scowl on his face. He was only doing his job, and Jungkook's feelings towards it didn't matter because he wasn't paying Jin's salaries.

As long as his employers were fine with the way he carried out his job, Jungkook would have to deal with it whether he liked it or not. But not for the next few days, at least. Jin was certain Jungkook was also pleased not to have him following him about or breathing down his neck to know his every action.

The break was good for both of them, but more for Jin. He needed the time to sort his feelings out. The last few days had been confusing and frustrating for him. Since the incident at the lab, Jin's mind had been malfunctioning in a way.

He had become biased with his thoughts and was letting his emotions interfere with his actions. That was bad for his job and his sanity and his principles. It was absolutely terrible. So, when Lee Sonbin, the head of security for the Jeon family, had abruptly told him to go with Jungkook, he had turned it down.

Fortunately, Lee hadn't put up an argument like always. He'd hummed in thought, said okay, and then hung up. He knew Jin's parents were dead, so working that angle of visiting them had worked to Jin's advantage.

He placed a call across to Hoseok, who was still at work. "My shift ends by seven," Hoseok had said. "But you can go on ahead. You know where I keep my spare key."

After dropping the call, Jin drove the car home before going to inform the Madam of his plans to visit his parents' grave the next day. She'd thought he would go with Jungkook since she was always at peace whenever Jin was with Jungkook.

"Lee hyung has it sorted out, Ma," Jin reassured her. "Jungkook will be safe. He's with the First Son of Korea. He can't possibly be safer anywhere else."

His words were not just to deflect the fear the Madam had. They were true. The president had the tightest, most effective security detail in the entire country, and everyone knew this. Anyone hoping to pull any funny trick that would put any member of the presidential family or their guest in danger was on suicide mission.

"You take care of yourself, as well, okay?" She'd said, her expression turning sympathetic. Jin thanked her, grateful for the permission granted and more than that, grateful that she was such a good person with a good heart, which was why he always got angry whenever Jungkook disrespected her.

It wasn't often, Jin would admit. Jungkook was a spoiled kid, but he was not a brat to his parents. He was ungrateful, but he didn't always show it to their faces. But on the rare occasions when he threw his stupid tantrums and used hurtful words to spite his parents, Jin's heart broke at the look of hurt on the Madam's face.

Because he knew they loved Jungkook. His parents loved him more than they loved themselves, and although some of their actions were quite questionable, Jin knew it was from a place of love. Everything they did, they did it, believing it would favour their only child.

Jin didn't have that. He didn't have parents doing things for his interest. He didn't have parents worrying about his whereabouts or his wellbeing. He didn't have parents blowing up his phone to know where he was and whom he was with. He didn't have parents yelling at him to get home at once.

Just once, he wished he could have his parents call him. He wished his phone would ring, and when he picked it up 'Macho Dad' would flash across the screen. He wished he would receive a text from 'Sweet Mom', telling him to come back home before dinner got cold.

He still had their phone numbers stored on his phone. He still had their text messages in his inbox. He still had Ryujin's voice messages threatening to skin Jin alive if he fought again. He couldn't bring himself to read their messages or listen to their voices, but he never deleted them either. He could never.

It was the only piece of his family that he had left. In his old tiny phone. The only thing that kept him going every day of his life.

Since he was going to Hoseok's place, Jin packed a few clothes into his backpack, along with his books, to do his homework before taking a hot shower and changing into a clean set of clothes. He was a sucker for large clothing, so his closet was filled with baggy pants, large tees, and hoodies. His style was more 90's hip hop, which a lot of people his age didn't appreciate.

Maybe it was why he had an appeal with the older crowd. Older women and older men seemed more attracted to him than those of his generation, which was a pretty good thing because people his generation didn't appeal to him either.

Hoseok wasn't for it. He hated that Jin wasn't like an average teenager who did average teenage stuff. Jin found that mindset funny. Kids his age were the worst. The most annoying set of people on earth were between the ages of 16 and 20, and he was always so ashamed to be associated with that crowd.

That was why, despite how much he loved and cared for Jimin and Taehyung, his best friend was Namjoon. Someone who was eight years older than he was. It was just sad that Hoseok didn't like Namjoon.

Jin knew he needed both men in his life. One was a brother figure, and the other was his best friend. He couldn't do without either. So, he'd done something that evening that could help the relationship between Hoseok and Namjoon.

But it might also worsen it.
