Prologue/Opening Scene
I was fiddling with the plants in my room. My hands gently caressed the veined green leaves of the potted plant near the window. I looked out at the city. It's so noisy here with so many cars honking, people talking, dogs barking, and the various people getting to and from place to place.
I used to enjoy life in the city. However, after I received my degree in botany, actually after I started my path as a plant witch, life in the city lost its mysticality. The honking annoys me. I despise it when I'm walking either to or from the store and hear some "men" with nothing much to do with their lives catcalling at me. And given my degree? Living in an extremely urban place like this doesn't make much sense. Sure, the suburbs would have those issues, but with that I at least can have an actual garden. Maybe I can make some food and teach children who want to make their own little gardens. My family's apartment doesn't exactly have much space for a decent garden, only some potted plants for some fresher air.
I went out of my room, mostly because I'm a little hungry. And I noticed my mom, who was talking to my grandparents, turning to look at me. I walked up to mom, who waved at me. Mom stayed nearby, sitting on a stool near the desk.
"Hey sweetie, your grandparents are on a video call with me. They want to talk to you. They say it's very important," she said, getting out of the chair so I could sit in.
I sat in the chair, waving to my parents, "Hey granny, hey grandpa!"
"Hey sweetheart, how've you been?" Granny asked.
"We've heard that you graduated university recently," Grandpa smiled, "you've grown up so quick!"
"I know. What do you want to ask me?" I tilted my head, after mom told me that my grandparents wanted to talk about something important I really want to know.
"Always been so straightforward," Granny sighed, "As you're aware, my hubby and I are getting old. We won't be able to take care of our little farm, or our little cottage, for much longer. Your grandfather and I talked for a while, and we decided to ask if you want to live on the farm."
My eyes widened, and I turned to my mom, who had her eyes wide and mouth agape. "Mirabelle has only been out of uni for less than half a year, and she barely knows any of the townsfolk! Besides, this is likely too sudden for her!"
I sighed, looking at my mom, "I've always wanted to work with plants, so I'm willing to take on the responsibility."
"Alright, but let me at the very least help you settle in," Mom said.
"Mira is the one your mother, and I felt that is best for this responsibility. She is a plant witch, after all." Grandpa looked at mom, then back at me. "We're not asking her to move in immediately. We plan on her moving in when spring comes, or at least a few days before. You'll have enough time to help Mira pack and settle into her new home."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "But where will you two go when I move into the farm?"
"We plan on moving to the city. Your parents and us have been helping us pick out a place to live. It's a good little place with plenty of other old people to talk to." Granny replied, smiling.
"We'll miss our little farm, though," Grandpa lamented. "Hopefully, we'll be able to visit once a while. There've been many new people around your age that moved in, a few of them have been helping us with cleaning up our cottage and plan on helping us pack."
"Alright then," I waved at the screen again, "I'll see you next month, love you!"
"Bye sweetie, we love you too!" my grandparents said, waving before ending the call.
I turned to my mom and in a deadpan voice joked, "I guess I'm going to become more plant than plant witch now," and she laughed.
"Mirabelle-" mom breathed in, then another burst of laughter before she continued, "-you're still a witch regardless, now you'll have a literal farm to grow your own witchy plants."
"Maybe I'll get a cat." I got up from the chair.
"Or the cat adopts you as their human." Mom quipped.
"Yeah, that could happen. I'll start prepping my stuff for when I move out."
And with that, now all I must really do is get my shit packed when it's time and mentally prepare myself for the potential chaos of me becoming a farmer, at least I won't have to pay extremely high rent compared to living in the city.
