You wheeled your wheelchair to the courtyard of the hospital with all your might, arm muscles aching as you pushed yourself. In your lap was a thick book of stories. "Y/N, where are you rushing to?!" A nurse called out but you whizzed past her, careful to avoid sharp turns. When you've arrived on the green lawn, the children gathered around you for the daily story telling. "Miss Y/N!" A pale kid with red eyes and lips called out to you. He sat on the ground in front of you as so did the other young patients. "I'm sorry I'm late, everyone. Dr. Osborne was delaying my medicine." You lowered your voice and leaned forward to them. "You know her and her old age, that hag." They chuckled as you flipped open to where you've last stopped and began. Their eyes were filled with excitement as you read them your story.
That's what Newt saw when he arrived with his suitcase beside him. He smirked at how you passionately told stories and earning shrieks and laughter from the sick children. Pick peeked his head from inside his coat pocket and followed Newt's eyes until they landed on you. "Yes, Pick. That's the woman I love." He palmed the black box inside his pocket because he finally was going to do it. He slowly walked towards you and when your eyes finally caught his own, you abruptly stopped the story and gave him a smile. "Everyone, meet Mr. New Scamander. My boyfriend" The children's eyes looked up at Newt who gave them a small nod as a 'hello'. "Good morning, children. Y/N." A kid, Percy tugged on his sleeve to get his attention. "Are you and Y/N in love?" By this bold statement, Newt's freckled cheeks turned red until his neck was also red. You gave him a sly smile when he didn't answer. "Of course we are... I love her so much.." He reverted the topic. "So, Ms. Y/N is telling you story, huh? May I join?" The children talked at once but they all meant 'yes'.
He took a seat with the children in the grass and placed his briefcase in his lap. "Please, Y/N. Continue." You smiled and continued the story with as much passion you had before. "Then, Prince Galileo slayed the dragon with his might sword. The dragon's head was sliced clean off, blood gushing from the stump of it's neck." The children all expressed their disgust for the morbid thought. Newt was amused by them. "By doing so, he lifted the curse from the entire kingdom. He was made king and married a beautiful princess. And they all lived happily ever after." The children applauded and Newt whistled with approval. "Except for the dragon of course whose dead body was used as fertiliser." The children laughed and stood up, single filed themselves and gave you a kiss on either cheek.
"See you tomorrow, children. Next story is going to be better than before." Newt stood in front of you and placed his hand into his pocket, the other gripping the handle of his briefcase. "Its good to see you, Newt." He placed a kiss on your forehead. "Same to you, Y/N. I've missed you, ya know." You smiled as he pushed you around the courtyard, his briefcase safe in your lap. "So, how has the beasts been? Are they well?" He didn't like talking about work with you but he answered the question. "They've been alright. But enough about me. How have you been?" You sighed, your shoulders falling as you placed your hands on top of the case. "I've been going fine... My legs really don't make me feel any better."
Newt knows that the incident that made your legs crippled is a sensitive topic and steered away from it. "So, you've been reading to the sick children here? How did that happen?" You shrugged. "One day, I was reading my book and then, a group if children came to me and said, 'Could you read to us?' And here I am now." He smiled to himself as he stopped the wheelchair by a bench where he took a seat next to you. There was a silence between the two of you, one he couldn't bear but he didn't say anything. "Newt, I don't know if I can live with this any longer." You suddenly said which made his head turn fast. "Why not?" "Ever since a child, I've always wanted to be an Auror but no, I had to be stupid and look now! Legs crippled!" Your eyes began to water. "It wasn't your fault, Y/N-"
"You know very well it was. It almost got two people killed... I deserve this punishment God bestowed upon me. I'm everyone's collateral damage." Tears fell down your cheeks and onto the leather briefcase. Newt knelt down in front of you and cupped your cheek in his right hand. "Y/N, look at me." You met his hypnotic blue eyes with your E/C eyes, engaging a stare. "You belong here. It wasn't your fault. Blaming yourself isn't going to being your feet back. I love you for who you are, cripples or no." You wiped your tear stained cheeks and gave him a small smile. "And also..." He pulled out the small box from his pocket. "Newt, I..." "I promise to look after you, to make sure you're safe at all cost. Y/F/N, would you be my wife?" You covered your mouth and more tears, happy tears, fell down your cheeks. "Yes! Oh my god, Newt! I will." He smiled and kissed. You kissed him back, smirking into the kisses. He pulled away and smiled lovingly at you.
"You're not my collateral damage."
