How Did You Know (Muggle College AU)

WOLFSTAR

So this one is loosely based off of a roleplay I did with someone a while ago. Basically, it's a no-magic, modern-day AU and Remus and Sirius met in college and started dating. However, Remus wasn't out to his family yet. But Sirius recently got disowned (for coming out) and doesn't have anywhere to go over the holiday break. Lucky for him, Remus has a plan to change that.

Third Person POV:

Remus had been repeatedly picking up his phone and then putting it down for half an hour. He was trying to build up the courage to ask his parents an important question. The 18th or 19th time he picked it up, he finally selected his mother's contact and hit call.

"Hello?" He heard his mother's voice say.

"Hey, Mum," Remus responded. "How are you?"

"Oh, I'm fine," she replied cheerfully. "Nothing new has happened. Your father's been grouching about his boss, the usual." Remus grinned. His father always complained about his boss. "What about you, dear? Any news for your mother? We've barely heard from you since term started!"

Swallowing hard, Remus ran through how this conversation should go. He just had to be casual about it. "Actually, Mum, I do have news. I've been, er, seeing someone." He pursed his lips as he awaited her response.

"Oh, that's lovely, Remus!" Hope Lupin exclaimed over the phone. Remus could hear the grin in her voice without seeing it. "What's his name?"

Time seemed to freeze.

Remus nearly dropped his phone.

His mind went completely blank.

"I- his- what do you- I never-" he stammered, unable to form a cohesive thought. Remus had never told either of his parents - or any of his family members for that matter - that he liked boys. "What do you mean by- I never said-" he paused, taking a breath. "How did... how did you know?"

Remus heard his mother laugh breathily. "Well dear, you were never exactly subtle. I've suspected for years. And then... about 2 months ago I was looking in your room for some scissors, and I found quite a bit of pride merchandise in your desk."

"2 months?!" Remus exclaimed, almost yelling into the phone. "Mum, why didn't you just bloody ask me about it then?"

"Well, since you hadn't told me yet I had to assume you weren't ready," she replied calmly. "But really, it's not a big deal Remus. So, who's the lucky guy?"

Remus sighed, shaking his head. "Er, his name's Sirius. And uh, I was wondering if he could spend Christmas break with us?" He bit his lip, hoping she'd say yes. "He's planning to stay on campus for the holidays, but I can't just leave him here alone. He doesn't have anywhere else to go... his parents disowned him. For being with me."

"Oh dear," Hope muttered, worry in her voice. "Well, in that case, I can hardly refuse to let him stay with us. You'll have to ask your father, of course, but I don't see why he'd object. Although, I don't think he knows about your... preference... yet. Hold on just a minute, I'll go give him the phone."

Remus nodded, although he knew nobody could see him. His roommate wasn't home so he had the dorm to himself for a while. "Alright. Thanks, Mum. Love you."

"I love you too, Remus," she responded. A moment later she spoke again, having found his father, probably in his office. "Here he is, I'll talk to you soon."

With that, he heard her pass off the phone and his father's gruff but kind voice was heard. "Well, son, how've you been?" Lyall Lupin asked.

"I'm good, Dad," Remus replied, taking a breath to prepare himself. "But I did have something to ask you..."

"Ask away," his father responded, his voice loud and jovial.

"Ok... well, I've talked to Mum and she's perfectly fine with all this... but there's somebody I'd like to bring home for Christmas Break." He paused, to let it sink in, but felt the need to specify before his father made assumptions. "He's... Er... my boyfriend."

Lyall was silent for a long moment, which to Remus felt like an hour. "Well," he said finally, "as long as he doesn't cause any trouble I don't see why not." A long breath escaped Remus' lungs and he sighed, grinning. "What's his name? Did you meet him at school?"

"Um, yeah," Remus responded, relieved beyond belief that both his parents were taking this so well. "His name's Sirius. Sirius Black."

"Black? Did you say his last name's Black?" Remus gulped. "As in the Blacks? Orion and Walburga Black? Their son?"

"Um... yeah. They weren't exactly happy about... everything..."

"Bloody fuck," Remus' father muttered, making Remus grin. Lyall Lupin had no filter. "I'd think the hell they wouldn't be. That family is bad news. But Sirius is welcome here, anytime. I'd imagine he's not welcome at home."

"He's not," Remus confirmed. "But, yeah, I'll be officially inviting him to join us for Christmas. I'm fairly sure he won't decline. Thanks, Dad."

"Of course, son. I'll talk to you soon, I hope. I love you."

"Love you too," Remus replied. "Bye."

"Bye." There was a click and Remus ended the call, opening his messages to text Sirius.

Wolf-Wolf: Hey, are you busy? I have news. You should come to my dorm.

Star-Boy: Unless procrastinating counts as busy I'm free. I can be there in 5.

Wolf-Wolf: Great!

Star-boy: Cya soon ;)

Wolf-Wolf: Dork. <3

Remus laid back on his bed, knowing Sirius was probably already throwing on shoes (and possibly a shirt). He was almost positive Sirius would want to go with him over break, but even so, he was nervous to ask. They'd never talked about Sirius meeting his parents, mostly due to the fiasco that their relationship had caused with Sirius' parents.

He was still lying there trying not to stress when he heard a knock on the door. But before Remus could invite the person in they opened the door and bounded inside, kicking the door closed behind them. As expected, it was Sirius. He was practically beaming as he plopped down on Remus' bed. Remus had sat up upon his boyfriend's entrance and greeted him with a kiss on the cheek.

"Oh come on," Sirius teased, "You can do better than that!" He smirked and pressed his lips to Remus' hastily, wiggling his eyebrows as he pulled away. Wrapping his arm lazily around Remus' waist, Sirius asked, "So, what's this ever so important news I had to come all the way here to hear?"

Remus rollers his eyes, but he was smiling nonetheless. "Your dorm is literally 2 floors above mine. You didn't have to travel all that far." Sirius huffed, trying to look annoyed but failing. "But it's not exactly news. I wanted to... ask you... something..." Sirius perked up but Remus fidgeted awkwardly, chewing on his lip.

"Well ask, then, Re, what's the problem?" Sirius asked, poking Remus' side gently. Remus jumped slightly and swatted Sirius' hand away, but Sirius kept his arm around him anyways. "Come on, what is it? I don't bite!" He growled playfully and Remus couldn't hold back his smile anymore.

"You're such a dork," he mumbled, shaking his head fondly. "How much coffee have you had today? You know what, don't answer that." As he chewed on his lower lip, Remus tried to gather his courage and just ask what he wanted to ask. "How would you feel about, I dunno, spending Christmas... with me..?"

"Is that all you had to ask?" Sirius questioned incredulously. "Bloody hell, Re, of course I want to spend Christmas with you! I don't exactly have many options, do I?"

Remus found himself grinning before he remembered that he'd left out one vital piece of information. "Well I'm glad, but I kind of forgot to mention that I'm going home for Christmas. And I was really meaning to ask if you want to come with me?"

Sirius was silent for a moment before he shrugged, grinning once again. "I don't see why not," he agreed. "Wait, I thought you hadn't told your parents you were gay?" He asked, cocking an eyebrow.

Remus returned the facial expression and they both giggled. Sirius' giggle was a sound Remus never got tired of. "I hadn't told them," he confirmed with a nod. "Well, up until about 20 minutes ago. And both of them said you were welcome to stay with us over break." Remus smiled with excitement, looking forward to the holidays more than ever. "I guess you won't have to fill out all the paperwork to stay in the dorms now."

Sirius giggled again, shaking his head. "I guess not," he replied, a smirk coming across his face. Remus recognized the glint in Sirius' eyes barely a moment before Sirius pounced on him, knocking Remus backwards onto the bed.

A laughed slipped out as Remus' head bounced on the mattress. "Sirius, what the hell?" He demanded playfully.

The smirking boy only shrugged, leaning down over Remus with eyes full of mischief. "I'd say I was sorry, but I couldn't help myself," he teased, his breath fanning across Remus' face. "You're just so damn cute when you're nervous. And even cuter when you're relieved. But I think I like your smile the best. It's beautiful."

Those words coaxed a smile from Remus. A real, happy smile rather than an amused smirk. At the sight of Remus' smile, Sirius smiled as well, leaning down until the side of his nose brushed Remus'.

"I can't wait to spend Christmas with you," he whispered, eyes sparkling as he met Remus' gaze. "And I'm glad I get to meet your parents. Even if mine don't want to meet you." The smiles were joined by a touch of sadness at the mention of Sirius' family's views. "But it doesn't matter. Because 1 Christmas with you is worth a lifetime of Christmas's with them." With that, Sirius finally closed the space between them and captured Remus' lips in his own.

Not gonna lie, I kept getting writers block during this but I kind of love it.

It's adorable. And even I know more of it is Remus and his parents than Remus and Sirius, but I think I'm gonna do a part 2. Ya know, when Sirius meets Lyall and Hope for the first time or something.
