"Hey, Hermione. What do you say you and me go dancing together?"

"Firstly, it's you and I not you and me. Secondly, that's no way to ask a girl to a dance. What were you trying, putting the question together in that way?" Hermione frowned and crossed her arms.

"I honestly can't say I didn't expect that. Seriously though, I would like to take you to the Yale Ball. So, Hermione Granger, will you do me the honour of accompanying me to the Yale Ball?"

Hermione blushed a little and smiled. "I'd be delighted to Fred. Thank you for asking."

Fred grinned. He had asked Hermione for the simple reason that Ron was being an idiot. Both him and Harry. They were both so worried about finding a girl to go with that they had overlooked Hermione. At least when Ron finally came to his senses Fred could rub it in his younger brothers face.

"Oi, Hermione... you're a girl."

"Very well spotted, Ron." Hermione frowned.

"Come with one of us! It's one thing for a bloke to show up alone, but for a girl it's just sad." Ron shrugged.

"I won't be going alone, because believe it or not, someone's asked me! And I said yes!"

"Well who are you going with then?" Ron asked.

"As if I would tell you now!" Hermione yelled and stormed off.

"I recon she doesn't have anyone and is just being moody about it." Ron sighed and shook his head.

"You did kind of insult her mate."

"Kind of?"
"Harry you're being to kind."
"He definitely insulted her."
"On a level there may be no return from."

Ron frowned. "Shut up, Fred and George."

Fred shrugged and walked away. He grinned as he thought about what Ron would do when he found out. George frowned and followed his twin. He didn't know that Fred had asked Hermione already but he knew Fred had been acting weird. So naturally George followed him.

"Are you okay?" Fred asked.

"You're a girl." Hermione responded in a mocking tone. "How is he so stupid!? Seriously he has the emotional range of a teaspoon. And to think that I would just wait for him to ask me?"

Fred shrugged. "He's definitely an idiot."

Hermione rolled her eyes. "Did you tell him?"

"Nope. I'm waiting for him to see you walk over to me. And then I'm going to rub his face in it." Fred admitted openly.

"Good. Agh! He's so insufferable!" Hermione yelled.

"So you're the one who asked her." George smirked as he leaned against the wall.

"One and only." Fred grinned.

Hermione rolled her eyes. "I'll see you around."

George stopped back. "Don't leave on my account."

"I have work to finish." Hermione shrugged.

*~*~*~*~*

Hermione found herself feeling rather nervous. She was standing in her room staring at her reflection. George had actually kept what he knew a secret. Now she wasn't sure if she was really okay with this. Fred was nice and all. He was sweet when he wanted to be.

She straightened her dress again before deciding to leave. As nervous as she was she would have felt horrible leaving Fred hanging. Especially since he had been so nice to her. Most of the house was already gone. She walked down towards the hall by herself. She stopped only to look around the corner.

Immediately she noticed Fred and George talking on one side. Ron and Harry were on the other side. Harry noticed her first and soon all of them had their attention on her. Hermione took a deep breath before stepping out from behind the corner.

She walked down the steps with a smile as she noticed Fred walk towards her. He stopped at the bottom before she did. He held his hand out towards her with a dramatic flare. She couldn't help but laugh at him.

"M'lady. Your knight has been waiting patiently. Would you care to join him now." Fred grinned.

"Sure Fred." Hermione laughed and took his hand.

"I must say you look beautifully wonderful tonight."

"Is that... Never mind. Thank you Fred and you look quite smashing yourself." Hermione responded.

"Fred! My own brother!? That's who you chose over me?" Ron looked incredulous at them.

Hermione shrugged and Fred smirked. It was the kind of smirk that said "suck it". George patted Fred on the back as they walked into the hall. He winked at Ron and bounced his eyebrows before leaving. Ron was staring slack-jawed after them.

Fred made sure to treat Hermione to a good time. He'd swoop in whenever he thought she might get upset. It happened quite a few times when Ron was trying to talk to her. In the end Fred and Hermione just stayed on the dancefloor. Through all the upbeat songs and slow music.

Near the end of the night Fred and Hermione were the last ones on the dancefloor. A slow song started playing and they danced to it. Hermione rested her head on Fred's shoulder they swayed. She wasn't tired by any means, it was just a really comfortable thing to do. Fred's arms wrapped loosely around her and her arms wrapped around his neck.

"The bladdy hell is this?"

Hermione pushed away from Fred and glared. "None of your concern Ronald. Why are you always trying to ruin everything?"

Hermione grabbed Fred's hand and marched off. She didn't really know why she did that. Her march slowed as they got further from the hall. She let go of Fred's hand and sighed, turning around to face him.

"I'm sorry..."

She was cut off by Fred hugging her. She sighed and hugged him back closing her eyes. They stayed like that for a while. Hermione's previously racing heart was calm. Fred hadn't said anything because he didn't want to make things worse. However, as the night had progressed he thought more about being with Hermione that rubbing it in Ron's face.

"Ammm. Hermione..." Fred started as he stepped back. "Would you... I don't know. Would you like to go out with me? Like actually go out with me as my girlfriend."

Hermione looked at Fred trying to figure out if he was joking. They watched each other for a while as Fred waited. Hermione's slight frown went away as she realised he was being serious. She smiled at him and nodded her head.

"Sure. It'll be fun right."

Fred laughed and nodded his head. "Yes definitely."

*~*~*~*~*

They had started off dating as a secret. Well as secret as a secret can get when there's a twin involved. George was actually helping them much to Hermione's surprise. Although she worried they'd pull a prank on her. It was hard for her to tell them apart really, even their mannerisms were similar.

"You don't have to worry." George said as he sat down. "Fred actually cares about you."

"What are you? A mind reader?" Hermione frowned.

George shrugged. "It's written all over your face. And Fred actually rejected my idea to trick you."

Hermione raised an eyebrow. "Really?"

George nodded and Hermione smiled. She hadn't expected that but it did put her heart at ease. She spoke with George for a while mostly about Fred. George even told her about a prank he pulled on Fred which made her laugh.

"I thought we agreed not to trick her."

George rolled his eyes and stood up. He patted Fred on the shoulder and stepped to the side. Hermione was smiling fir a different reason now. Fred was actually trying to defend her against his own twin. It made her feel special.

"Relax Gred. I was simply telling her some old war stories." George turned to Hermione and winked. "See what I meant? Lover boy here is wrapped around you finger. Anyway I'm going to go. Take care of my brother okay."

George walked away and Fred hung his head. He had been quick to assume when he saw them together. maybe he was even a little jealous or protective. He really didn't know but he only wanted the best for Hermione.

Hermione laid a hand on his shoulder. They had been dating for over six months now. She shifted closer to Fred and laid her head on his shoulder. She was going to wait for him to talk since she didn't know what to say.

"I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions. I really thought he was trying to trick you though." Fred sighed.

"It's okay." Hermione responded. "It's sweet that you care."

Fred smiled and kissed her cheek. Hermione blushed and looked away. Neither of them said anything for a while. Eventually Fred took her hand and stood up. Hermione let him lead her to the quidditch field. Still neither of them spoke.

Hermione was pretty much in shock. Fred hadn't ever kissed her before. They held hands and hugged and stuff but they had never kissed each other. Fred had never insisted such affection and Hermione had never pushed the issue.

Fred turned to Hermione once they stopped. He held her hand in his. He gently rubbed the back of her hand with his thumb. They had to talk and he knew that. Soon he'd be done with Hogwarts and she'd still be there.

"Hermione. I needed to ask you about what we're going to do." Fred said as he locked eyes with her.

"What do you mean?"

"We've been together for a while. I kind of want everyone to know that." Fred shrugged. "I've got like one year left here."

"But you're Ron's brother and I'm his friend. Aren't you worried about what they're going to say?" Hermione frowned a little.

"I mean sure, but I also don't want anyone thinking that they can flirt with you." Fred frowned.

"You mean you don't want Ron trying anything." Hermione raised an eyebrow. "Are you really worried about that?"

Fred sighed. "Six months ago you bit Ron's head off for not having the guts to ask you to the Ball first. A lot of people talk."

Hermione pulled her hand from Fred's and crossed her arms. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means that everyone thinks you like Ron."

"Wh... You didn't." Hermione was staring at Fred with wide eyes.

"I didn't I swear." Fred held his hands up in defence. "I mean when you were in second year George and I might have made a bet and said some stuff but since the Ball I haven't said or did anything. Plus I do regret what we did now but..."

"Just stop." Hermione held her hand up. "Are you telling me that you've just been using me?"

"No!" Fred quickly said. "No definitely not. I just... I think I'm falling for you hard Hermione. I want to call you my girlfriend in front of everyone. I want to hold your hand. I also want to..."

Fred stepped closer to Hermione and hesitated before kissing her. Hermione froze in her spot and her hands dropped to her sides. She didn't move or kiss Fred back. Fred stepped back and shoved his hands in his pockets. He shrugged unable to look Hermione in the eye.

"You just..." Hermione stammered and shook her head. "What happens when you graduate? Would we still..."

"I'd like to still have a relationship with you." Fred shrugged. "Only if you want to though."

*~*~*~*~*

It had been a hard adjustment for both Hermione and Fred. After they admitted to having a relationship and Fred proving it with a kiss, things didn't exactly settle down. Still Fred was always there to save Hermione from difficult and uncomfortable situations. But now he wasn't.

He had graduated already and Hermione still had to go to Hogwarts. It meant they would see so much less of each other. Mainly because Ron refused to let his mother invite Hermione over for anything. Fred and Hermione had agreed not to mention their relationship to his parents. So without the invite for being Ron's friend Hermione didn't spend any time with Fred outside of Hogwarts and Hogsmead weekends.

Now he wasn't even going to be at Hogwarts. The thought upset Hermione more than she thought it would. She had to sit back and watch Ron and Lavender and it frustrated her. She knew deep down that even though Ron had Lavender he'd still find a way to keep her away from Fred.

The year was passing way too slowly. Harry and Ron were having a great time being the centre of attention. Hermione scoffed at them for being so... She didn't know, but she hated Ron for what he was doing.

"You okay?"

Hermione sighed. "No Harry I'm not. Ron is seriously so annoying."

"You're upset because you couldn't vist Fred?" Harry sat down next to her and she rested her head on his shoulder.

"I miss Harry. It's strange and weird but I really miss him."

"I just don't understand how that happened honestly." Harry shrugged awkwardly trying not to jolt her head.

"It started off as nothing. He told me why he invited me to the Yale Ball. He was just looking to rub it in Ron's face. Even afterwards I was still furious with Ron. And Fred said we should make it official." Hermione shrugged as she explained. "But I grew to care for him. Possibly even love him."

"It's definitely love." Hermione sat up and frowned at Harry. "What? You miss him and you're mad at your friend for not supporting you. Do you think you would be this upset if you didn't love Fred?"

"I... Wow." Hermione said as she rested her head on his shoulder again. "Honestly didn't think you had that much wisdom inside your skull. No offence."

"It'll be okay Hermione I promise." Harry said ignoring her comment.

The next three weeks Hermione found herself burried in her work. She got upset every time she thought about Fred and potions class did little to help with that. She distracted herself with books and work. She'd figure out a solution about seeing Fred when the holidays came.

A letter landed in front of her as she was engrossed in a book. At first she paid it no mind. A letter could wait since she figured nothing important would be on it. If it was important they would have sent a howler. A good while passed before she finally opened the letter.

Hogsmead weekend.

Meet me for a butterbeer. I miss you.

Hermione smiled. Their next Hogsmead weekend was a week away. She didn't think that she would be able to wait that long. It had been a long time since she had last seen Fred. Harry was right about her feelings towards him. The absence made her upset and cranky but now she'd get to see him.

Hermione left Hogwarts with a smile the day they were headed to Hogsmead. She pretty much ignored Ron and Harry since her mind was stuck on one thing. When they entered hogshead Ron groaned in protest.

Hermione's mood immediately plummeted. After almost two years of being in a relationship with Fred she had started picking up on things that were different between the twins. She knew that they were staring at George and not Fred. George waved them over with a smile.

Harry and Ron walked towards him and Hermione had attempted to follow. Attended because a pair of arms kept her from going anywhere. She frowned and turned around, coming face to face with Fred. The realisation made her instantly sigh with relief.

"Hi." Fred smiled. "Let's get out of here while George is still distracting them."

Hermione nodded her head and let Fred lead them away. When they stopped the first thing Fred did was kiss her. Hermione immediately kissed him back. In that moment they had both decided that they wanted to tell Fred's parents. At least they'd see each other for the holiday's.

Maybe absence did make the heart grow fonder because Hermione had never been that happy to see someone before.
