Time had gone by very slowly. We were coming up on the Christmas holidays. I hated seeing Lavender flaunt herself all over Ron. Since Harry made him believe that he had the liquid luck he's been acting like a real jerk. I helped him get on the team in the first place!
"Hermione? Are you okay?"
I was trying not to cry but I couldn't stop it. Harry sat down next to me and gave me a hug. Of course Ron and Lavender had to basically walk by a few minutes later. Ron and his pretending to care about me. I was infuriated even though I couldn't stop crying.
I spent the next two weeks avoiding Ron and gathering information. Even if Ron didn't want to be with me he could have picked someone better that Lavender of all people. I think that was what hurt me the most. Why did it have to be her?
I knew none of us were going home for Christmas and I also knew that Lavender was. It took weeks of slueth work and checks but I got the information that I needed. I had a plan. A plan I was sure would be perfect.
With Lavender gone I approached Ron and apologized for my behaviour. Harry seemed pleased and relieved that we were once again talking. I was the jealous type by any means. I just usually knew exactly what I wanted and naturally was upset when I couldn't get it.
"Hey Ron do you maybe want to go for a walk and talk?" I asked.
"Sure." Ron nodded and stood up.
"It was now or never. I had everything set up. Ron and I would be walking like nothing was going to happen. Then the magical Mistletoe would trap us. I had found some close to the forbidden forest. It traps two people under it until they kiss. It can't be a simple kiss on the cheek either.
"Hermione I hadn't realised that Lavender upset you like that."
"It's okay it's over now. I mean I will support you if that's what you want." I shrugged and looked up.
We were coming to the place I had hidden the Mistletoe. My heart was starting to race the closer we got. This was going to happen. I just hoped Ron would see that I'm the one he should be with. Lavender only cared about his current popularity.
"You would?" Ron frowned at me.
"I guess." I shrugged.
I wasn't going to because this was going to...
"Hey watch it!"
"Oh no." I mumbled and looked up.
I saw the Mistletoe before I saw the person. I stepped back but it took so much effort. Ron grabbed my arm and tried to pull me back but my body wouldn't move.
"What the hell is this? Granger move."
"I... I can't." I looked the person in the eye and my heart stopped.
Of all people on this earth it had to be a Slytherin. Not just any Slytherin but Draco Malfoy's best friend. Blaise Zabini was glaring at me and talking but I wasn't hearing a thing. No one was supposed to be here.
"Get away from her!" Ron's voice broke through my rising panic
"I can't move you moron." Blaise shot back.
I looked up at the Mistletoe above us. Ron and Blaise coppied my actions. I saw the shock and surprise on Blaise's face before it turned into a scowl. Ron was not even trying to hide the surprise on his face. My blood drained as I realised what had to happen.
"Ron stop." I said my voice breaking a bit.
This wasn't how it was supposed to have happened. Ron was supposed to be the one stuck with me. I was supposed to kiss him. No one was supposed to be walking past. Especially not Blaise fucking Zabini.
"He can't move. Neither of us can until we kiss." I explained.
"Fuck that." Blaise grumbled.
He pulled out his wand and before I could atop him he destroyed the Mistletoe. I started to panic again as Blaise walked away. Magic Mistletoe couldn't just be destroyed without consequence. The further away Blaise got from me the more I realised a pain growing in my stomach.
"Blaise stop! You can't just destroy magic Mistletoe!" I yelled after him, but my words seem to have fallen on deaf ears.
Ron and I went back to our Common room. I didn't care about trying to win Ron over anymore. I was scared about what was going to happen now that Blaise had destroyed that Mistletoe. I hadn't been able to find anything except that destroying the Mistletoe was bad.
I felt more and more tired as the days ticked on. My energy was being drained constantly and I didn't know why. The only time I felt remotely okay was when Blaise walked past me. My energy was eventually drained beyond what I could have imagined. I had thought that my life was going to end as I closed my eyes.
*~*~*
"You're awake. Finally."
I sat up fast and backed away. It took a bit of effort but not as much as I would have thought. I looked around and then at the person who had spoken. My initial panic was because I hadn't recognised the voice. Now it was because I was sitting in the Slytherin common room.
"What am I doing here?" I said.
My voice sounded harsh and broken. My throat felt like I swallowed sandpaper. Everyone in the room was watching me. I was frowning at Blaise who was sitting in front of me. He didn't look bothered by what was happening.
"I brought you here." Blaise shrugged. "Here drink this."
"Wha..." My voice cut out.
"It's a pepper up potion." Blaise frowned.
I took the potion and drank it. I felt a little bit better that I was certain of. I looked around again and realised there weren't as many people as I had initially thought. I had still expected all the Slytherin's would have gone home though.
"You said I couldn't destroy magic Mistletoe. Why?" Blaise asked.
"It's not a good idea." I shrugged.
Blaise rolled his eyes. "Well clearly not Granger. Now explain what's happening to us?"
I frowned at him. "For your information I warned you not to destroy it. And I don't always have the answers to everything. I couldn't find a single document saying anything about what happens if you destroy it."
My voice was surprisingly much better and my throat didn't feel bad at all. Blaise rolled his eyes and mumbled something about not giving me that potion. We sat in relative silence for a while as both of us thought about what to do.
"So I just kiss you then and all of this goes away." He more stated than asked but I could understand why he thought that.
"I wasn't going to kiss you before I'm not going to kiss you now." I crossed my arms and turned away from him.
"Bullshit Granger. You and I both know that." Blaise deadpanned.
I hated that he was right. I would have kissed him because I would have wanted to get out of that situation. I thought about it for a moment but something didn't sit right. It couldn't have been as easy as a simple kiss. Nothing was every that easy.
"Fine. Just get it over with so I can get back to my dorm." I turned back to him with a frown.
"Okay then."
Blaise leaned towards me. I thought about moving away. I wanted to change my mind. Blaise lifted his hand and as if reading my mind his hand wrapped around the back of my neck. Our lips connected and I felt a spark run through my body. I had expected him to be hard and rough but he was the complete opposite. His lips were soft and his actions gentle.
I started to kiss him back unintentionally. Our lips moved smoothly against each other. I felt his other hand pull my waist a bit closer. I think that's what broke me out of the haze I was in. I pushed him away and he didn't even protest. It took me a few seconds to actually open my eyes.
"I'll be leaving now." I said as I stood up.
I couldn't believe I had enjoyed that. My body was shaking and I felt so energized. I walked out if the Slytherin common room without looking back and made a bee line for the Gryffindor common room. My heart was pounding in my ears.
"Hermione!"
I was engulfed in a hug. "What?"
"Where have you been?" Harry asked me.
"What are you talking about?" I frowned.
"You were gone for two days."
My eyes went wide. Two days? I was gone for... My thoughts were cut off by another hug. This time Ron had hugged me. I still couldn't believe that I had been gone for two days though. Harry explained to me what happened after I disappeared.
"We're just glad you're okay and safe." Ron finished off.
I smiled meekly at them and explained how tired I had been. I said that I had fallen asleep in the library and that's where I had just vome from. They believed me since I had been spending a lot of time there. I also knew none of them would have looked there if I hadn't forced them.
The next few days went by rather quickly. I was still feeling energized and so much more better. I couldn't believe that a simple kiss was all it had taken. Before I knew it our second term was starting. Other than occasionally passing Blaise in the halls I never really spoke to him. He had started looking worse though and I felt bad for him.
"Who's that?" Harry nodded at someone sitting against a wall.
"I don't..." I started before actually realising who it was. "That's Blaise Zabini."
I suddenly felt drawn to him. Like an invisible force was pushing me forward. I couldn't walk back or to the side. I just had to walk towards him. Harry followed me with a frown. My bidy was on autopilot as I knelt down in front of him. I placed a hand to his cheek and he instantly leaned into my hand.
My heart was aching and I had no idea why. I couldn't leave him though my body was no longer my own. Harry raised an eyebrow at me and all I could do was shrug. He looked around and sighed helping me lift Blaise to his feet. We didn't go far and I didn't let go of Blaise. Harry sat him down in a chair in one of the nearby classes.
"Okay can we go now?"
"I can't move. And I can't let go of him." I shrugged.
"That's weird." Harry frowned. "Do you know why?"
"I thing this has something to do with the mistletoe he destroyed." I frowned. Had this been what happened to me?
Hours passed with Harry and I just sitting around. I ended up just curling up on Blaise's lap because it was the most comfortable thing for me to do. I explained to Harry what had happened the day this started. I also explained why I had been so exhausted and the truth about what happened to me for two days.
"So are we going to have to stay here for two days?" Harry frowned.
"I hope not." I sighed.
"I. Had to. Why. Can't you?" The voice came out croaky.
I looked up at Blaise who was struggling to keep his eyes open. His breath was strained as well. I realised that I could finally move away from him. I stood up and faced him. He shifted on the chair and leaned forward.
"I knew it wouldn't be so simple." I said.
"Worth. A shot." He struggled.
"I don't know how to fix this. Maybe we should tell a professor." I suggested with a frown.
"To. Weak." Blaise sighed.
I sighed and lifted his head. "This is only so you can walk on your own. So we can find a professor to help us."
With that said I kissed him. Again I felt a shock run through my body. Again I was getting lost in the feeling. His lips moved with mine. It felt blissful and I would have sworn that time had stopped. A throat being cleared brought me back down to earth. I pulled away from Blaise and refused to look at him.
"Professor Snape should know what's happening. At the very least he'd be able to make a cure." Blaise said.
"We should go to Slughorn." Harry interjected.
"Why not both." I suggested.
I didn't want a fight to start. I didn't know how long it would be until I ended up the way Blaise was again. I didn't want to chance anything or leave a possibility out. Blaise returned with Snape a few minutes before Harry returned with Slughorn.
We explained what was happening. Slughorn seemed genuinely intrigued by what we said. Snape looked highly annoyed. He glared at Blaise as we got to the final part of our story. Slughorn sat back to ponder what to do. Snape on the other hand stood up and slapped Blaise over the head.
"As much as I detest Slytherin interacting with Gryffindor you should have just kissed her." Snape said directly to Blaise.
"Why?" Blaise frowned and rubbed his head.
"Magic Mistletoe places a curse on whoever refuses to kiss. That's why you can't move until you kiss. And you went and destroyed it. Now you two are stuck with each other. Think of it like this. You need energy to live. Since you destroyed it to took energy from her." Snape pointed at me. "And in order for her to gain energy she has to take it from you. But then you will need energy from her. The cycle will continue on and on."
"Isn't there a way to break it?" I asked.
*~*~*
"Hey, love "
I smiled and rolled my eyes. "Seriously?"
Blaise laughed and shrugged. "Why not?"
"Just don't." I shook my head.
"Okay then. But you do realise we're both lying to our friends right." Blaise raised an eyebrow.
"That's exactly why you shouldn't give me a pet name."
Despite professor Snape telling us there was no known way to get rid of the curse I had found one. I wasn't going to just sit back and accept defeated. Especially since Ron seemed so happy with Lavender. I didn't want my lift dictated by a mistake I didn't even make.
I hunted all over the place looking for some way to break the cycle. I had almost given up a few times. Especially after Ron had ended up in the hospital wing. I ended up using that as motivation to find a solution. I couldn't be with Ron if I was still stuck with Blaise after all.
Each time Blaise and I kissed I felt something come alive in me. Each time it was the same. I got lost in the feeling. The bliss that came with feeling like the only person that mattered in the world. I felt like in that moment Blaise offered himself to me and all I had to do was accept it.
I had found a lone mistletoe plant growing a little further inside the forbidden forest. I had also decided that I was going to return the favour. I was going to offer myself to Blaise the same way he had been doing for me. I was going to make it count and I hoped that it would break the cycle.
I wasn't sure if it was the mistletoe or the fact that I had surrendered myself. Either way I felt like I had stepped through a tidal wave and come out the other side. Neither Blaise nor I felt our energy get drained. The cycle had been broken and we both instantly felt it.
Two weeks had gone by after that a I couldn't stop wondering about the feeling I got when kissing Blaise. So I pretended to lose energy. I pretended to faint and pass out. I kept my eyes closed the entire time as I felt myself getting carried away.
"You can open your eyes. We're alone."
"Good."
"Is there a reason you had Harry frantically trying to het me to help you?" Blaise asked as he put me down.
"Well yes. How else would I get you alone?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Okay so?" Blaise frowned.
"I need to know if it was just because of what was happening." I shrugged and looked down.
"Are you talking about this?"
I felt Blaise lift my head and kiss me before I could respond. Like every other time before, a shock ran through my body. His soft lips parted and I found myself copying the action. I was lost. His other hand rested on my waist for a moment. It then moved to the small of my back and he pulled me closer.
I didn't push him away. He pulled away from me and I found myself wanting to hit him for doing that. Blaise smirked as I finally looked up at him. I felt annoyed by his smirk. What was so damn amusing anyway?
"I was wondering about that as well." Blaise said. "I'm kind of glad that it wasn't because of whatever was happening."
"Wait what?" I frowned.
Blaise laughed. "I enjoyed kissing you a lot more than I imagined. I figured it was just part of what was happening. Honestly I'm actually glad it wasn't."
That's how I ended up here with Blaise. That's how I ended up lying about it. I wanted to see where this was going to go. I wanted more from Blaise than I ever wanted from Ron. Even when Ron and I finally kissed.
As expected Ron said we couldn't be together while I had this "problem" with Blaise. I was okay with that. My mistake with the mistletoe was that I was using it because I was jealous. Blaise's mistake was destroying it.
It had become a happy mistake for me in the end. Even though I was hiding my growing relationship with Blaise, I was fully invested from the beginning. Blaise was kind of like an egg, for lack of a better comparison. One thing I loved though was the fact that he couldn't hide what he was feeling when we kissed.
Two wrongs might not make a right but they sure as hell make an interesting pair.
