Even if your brother was a complete pain in the arse, you were good friends. You had got along for most of your childhood and when the two of you went to Hogwarts you did continue to be friends even if it meant you had to be aware of how much he annoyed you. Your friendship did get better with age but when he started to like your friend, Lily, it only made you realise how much of a prick James could be.

You were packing up your stuff in the common room when your brother sat down next to you on the sofa.

"Where are you going?" He asked. "Avoiding me again?"

You rolled your eyes at him, continuing to finish packing up your belongings into your satchel so that you could carry it all throughout the castle, without dropping it off of the moving staircases as you had too often.

"I'm meeting Lily in the library to study for our potions test next week. Unlike you we actually want to work for our grades."

James instantly perked up at the sound of the woman he had devoted his life to even if she had no interest in him.

"I'll join you. I need to practice too."

You shot him a glare. "You never practice or revise for anything, you just want to come to leer at Lily and I am not willing to let you be the reason I fail this test, you idiot."

He frowned and sunk further into the seat.

"That's not fair."

"Yes it is," you corrected. "You're a creep and I'm not letting you stalk my best friend."

James was unimpressed with you getting in the way of the woman he deemed as a soulmate even though Lily would have used choice words to describe him.

"At least put in a good word for me," he begged. "She trusts your opinion and maybe you could convince her to give me a chance."

You rolled your eyes. "You owe me. I'll try but she knows how much of a prick you are and no matter how much sweet talking I can do, will not change who you are. She's already met you and knows what you're like, I can't work miracles."

He held up his middle finger at you as you stood up and headed out of the common room, knowing that he would likely make an excuse to be in the library now that he knew where Lily would be.
