can't | regulus black
from little women (2019)
Y/n and Regulus walked around Hogwarts' beautiful campus. Today was a day off. Most students had gone to Hogsmeade, but Y/n and Regulus stayed.
They walked hand in hand (as friends) around the grassy fields. Y/n ranted on and on about how all her friends were focused on was snogging, and how no one wanted to have any actual fun. As y/n talked, all Regulus could think about was her lips on his.
He had enough. He couldn't keep this secret anymore. He needed to tell her. "And now they have barely any time for me." Y/n continued. "You don't have to be alone, you know?" Regulus blurt. "What? Do you want to talk about boys with them, too?" Y/n teased. Regulus stopped walking, Y/n turned to face him. He shook his head, his expression was serious.
"No. No. No." Y/n shook her head, finally picking up on his remark. "It's no use, y/n." Regulus blurt. "Please don't." Y/n begged as she started to walk away. "Y/n, we've gotta have it out." Regulus adds. "No, we can't!" Y/n exclaimed.
"I have loved you ever since I have known you, y/n. I couldn't help it. And- and I tried to show, and you wouldn't let me - which is fine. But I must make you hear it now. And give me an answer, because I cannot go on like this!" Regulus explained. "Reg, please. Please." Y/n begged.
"I gave up blood purity, I gave up everything you didn't like. And I'm happy I did - It's fine. And I waited, and I never complained, because I- you know, I figured you'd love me, y/n! And I realize I'm not half good enough, and I'm not this great man, and..." Regulus continued. "No, no. Yes. Yes, you are! You're a great deal too good for me. And I- I'm so grateful to you. And I'm so proud of you. And I just... I don't see why I can't love you as you want me to. I don't know why." Y/n cut Regulus off.
There was a long silence. A silence that stung, and hurt way more than any dark mark. "You can't?" Regulus croaked. "No. I can't. I can't change how I feel, and... it would be a lie to say I do when I don't. I'm so sorry, Reg. I'm so sorry. But I just can't help it." Y/n sighed, her voice breaking.
"I can't love anyone else, Y/n. I only love you." Regulus replied, walking backwards to create space between the two. "Reg, it'd be a disaster if we dated..." Y/n began. "It wouldn't be a disaster!" Regulus exclaimed. "We'd be miserable." Y/n explained. "We would be perfect!" Regulus disagreed. "I can't. I can't. I can't. I've tried it, and I failed." Y/n uttered.
"Why does everyone expect it, then? Why do your family, and my family expect it? Why are you saying this? Say yes, and let's be happy together, y/n." Regulus pleads. "I can't say yes truly. So i'm not going to say it at all. And you'll see that I'm right eventually, and you'll thank me for it." Y/n assured.
There was more silence. All that could be heard was Regulus' heavy breathing. "I would rather kill myself than realize this, y/n." Regulus spoke again. "Reg." Y/n began. "I would rather be dead." Regulus repeat, walking away from her. "Regulus, don't say that. Regulus.
'Listen, you'll find some lovely, accomplished girl - who will love you, and adore you, and- and she's gonna make a fine woman for your fine house. But I wouldn't, all right?" Y/n panted as she chased Regulus down a hill. "Yes you would, y/n." Regulus shook his head. "I'm- Look at me! I'm homely, and I'm awkward, and I'm odd!" Y/n ranted. "I love you, y/n." Regulus grumbled, interrupting y/n once again. "And you'd be ashamed of me." Y/n added.
"I love you, Y/n." Regulus repeat. "And we would quarrel. We can't help it even now. I hate elegant society, you hate my scribbling - and we would be unhappy. And we'd wish we hadn't done it, and everything would be horrid." Y/n sniffled.
Regulus didn't speak up again. He only looked at y/n with a sharp, pained gaze. "Is there anything more?" He asked, pieces of his shattered heart spilling off his tongue. "No. Nothing more." Y/n stammered. "All right." Regulus groaned, turning around to walk away from her.
"Except that... Reg, I don't believe that I will ever marry." Y/n blurt. Regulus stopped walking and turned back around, walking closer to her again. "I'm happy as I am. And I love my liberty too well to be in any hurry to give it up." Y/n added.
"I think you're wrong about that, y/n. I think you will marry, y/n. I think you'll find someone, and love them, and you will live and die for them - because that's your way. And you will -
' - And i'll watch." Regulus muttered before walking away. Y/n watched him leave. She didn't chase after him, she only watched. As he got farther, she looked around at her surroundings before sitting down on the grass, looking out at the black lake.
