First Days are Often the Hard Ones

Paige walked into Professor Flitwick's Charms class, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Harry, Ron, and Hermione sat beside her, offering reassuring smiles.

Professor Flitwick greeted the class, "Welcome, students! Today, we'll be learning the Levicorpus charm. It's a bit tricky, but I have faith in you."

Paige gripped her wand tightly, her excitement bubbling beneath the surface. Charms had always fascinated her, but she had never practiced Levicorpus before.

Professor Flitwick demonstrated with a flick of his wand. "Levicorpus!"

A first-year student let out a surprised yelp as they were lifted by the ankle into the air. The class gasped before Professor Flitwick gently set them down with a chuckle. "No need to worry, it's perfectly harmless. Now, pair up and give it a try!"

Paige turned to Harry, who grinned. "Want to practice together?"

She nodded, raising her wand. "Alright, but don't hold back. Let's see what happens."

Harry chuckled and lifted his wand. "Alright, here goes-Levicorpus!"

For a moment, nothing happened, but then Paige felt a strange tug at her ankle. Suddenly, she was yanked into the air.

"Ah!" she yelped, flailing slightly. The class turned to look, some giggling while Ron clapped. "Blimey, Harry, that actually worked!"

Harry winced. "Uh, how do I-"

"Point your wand and say Liberacorpus!" Hermione whispered urgently.

Harry quickly flicked his wand. "Liberacorpus!"

Paige dropped unceremoniously onto the floor with a thump.

Ron winced. "Ouch."

Paige groaned, rubbing her back as Harry rushed to help her up. "Sorry! First time trying it," he admitted sheepishly.

She took his hand and got up, brushing off her robes. "No worries. My turn."

She raised her wand, focusing on Harry. "Levicorpus!"

A flicker of magic crackled at the tip of her wand- and then suddenly, every desk in the room lifted into the air.

Students gasped as books, parchment, and ink bottles floated several feet above their heads. Professor Flitwick yelped, nearly toppling off his stack of books.

Paige's eyes widened in horror. "Oh no- how do I fix this?!"

Hermione was already flipping through The Standard Book of Spells, Grade Five. "That's definitely not how the charm works!"

Harry and Ron exchanged a look. "Well, she is a Thornvale," Ron muttered.

Professor Flitwick, regaining his composure, waved his wand. "Finite Incantatem!"

The desks and books dropped back into place with a loud thud. Paige winced. The entire class was staring at her.

Professor Flitwick adjusted his robes and peered at her curiously. "Miss Thornvale, that was... unexpected. Your magic is quite powerful."

Paige swallowed. "I-I didn't mean to-"

Flitwick waved a hand. "No harm done, though we may need to work on your control. Stay after class for a moment, won't you?"

Paige nodded, sinking into her seat as whispers filled the classroom. She could feel the weight of curious gazes on her.

"Well," Ron whispered, smirking, "if Hogwarts wasn't talking about you before, they definitely will be now."

Paige groaned, resting her head on her desk. This was going to be a long day.

As the rest of the students filed out, some throwing curious glances her way, Paige lingered behind, fidgeting with her wand. Harry, Ron, and Hermione gave her reassuring looks before leaving, though Ron muttered something about hoping she wouldn't accidentally make Flitwick float next.

Once the door shut, Professor Flitwick turned to her with a thoughtful expression. "Miss Thornvale, that was a remarkable display of raw magical power. Unintentional, of course, but remarkable nonetheless."

Paige winced. "I didn't mean to lift the desks. I was just trying to cast Levicorpus on Harry."

"Yes, yes, I believe you," Flitwick said kindly. He climbed onto his usual stack of books and studied her closely. "Tell me, Paige, have you ever had issues with spell control before?"

Paige hesitated. "Not exactly... I mean, I've always been good at magic, but sometimes weird things happen. Like, spells get stronger than they should, or I make things happen without trying."

Flitwick nodded knowingly. "Your magical core is exceptionally strong. It's likely tied to your lineage- both of your parents were talented spellcasters, after all."

Paige frowned. "So, what do I do?"

"Well, it's nothing to worry about," Flitwick assured her, "but you'll need to work on focusing your intent. Magic isn't just about the incantation and wand movement; it's about control. A wizard or witch with powerful magic must learn to direct it properly, lest it act on its own."

Paige bit her lip. "So I need to practice?"

Flitwick smiled. "Precisely! I'd like to offer you some extra tutoring sessions- nothing too strenuous, just some exercises to help you refine your spellwork. What do you say?"

Paige blinked. "Wait... you're offering personal lessons?"

Flitwick chuckled. "Well, of course! I've done the same for students with strong magical potential before. Why, I once worked with young Lily Evans- your friend Harry's mother, in fact. She had quite the gift for Charms."

Paige's eyes widened. "Wow... that's- " she paused, then grinned, "that's actually really cool."

"Wonderful!" Flitwick clapped his hands. "We'll start tomorrow evening. Meet me here after dinner, and we'll get to work."

Paige nodded, a mix of excitement and nerves swirling inside her. Maybe this wasn't such a bad thing after all. If she could get better control over her magic, she might not make a fool of herself again.

"Thank you, Professor," she said earnestly.

Flitwick beamed. "It's my pleasure, Miss Thornvale. Now, off you go- I believe your friends are waiting."

Paige hurried out of the classroom, her mind buzzing. As soon as she stepped into the corridor, Hermione, Harry, and Ron rushed over.

"Well?" Hermione asked eagerly. "What did he say?"

Paige grinned. "He's giving me private lessons."

Ron's jaw dropped. "Blimey! First day and you're already getting special tutoring?"

Harry smirked. "Told you she was interesting."

Hermione gave her an approving nod. "Professor Flitwick wouldn't offer unless he saw real talent. You must have serious magical potential."

Paige's grin faltered slightly. Talent was one thing, but control was another. Still, as she walked alongside her new friends, she couldn't help but feel a small spark of excitement. Maybe Hogwarts was going to be even more interesting than she'd expected.

Little did she know, her troubles were just beginning.
