In developing this story, I wanted to understand the theme and overall motives of my characters. To do that, I started with a few questions.
Q1 — What type of story are we dealing with when it comes to CURSED CHILD?
A1 — This narrative should feel familiar. Like CHAMBER OF SECRETS, it's a story about Harry Potter facing an offshoot of his greatest enemy, Lord Voldemort. In this case, the indirect battle is not with a soul-infused diary, but with his offspring. In both stories, Voldemort is not present. The difference here is that Harry is an adult.
Q2 — Who are these characters? And what is the story we are trying to tell?
A2 — Harry has always been searching for a family to call his own. He finally has it. He caught the Golden Snitch. Now what?
Delphini was raised an orphan, of sorts, knowing that she is the sole heir of Voldemort. What is her journey? What has she been searching for?
And how much damage could be caused when their hopes, dreams, and pursuits collide?
Q3 — What does the title mean? Who was the cursed child?
A3 — It's maddeningly ambiguous in the original and should be more defined going forward. To me, the title could have many layers of meaning. Is it Albus Potter? Delphi? Scorpius Malfoy? Or is it Harry, himself?
Q4 — Like any good character in the finale of their own story, there is a lie Harry is telling himself. If we look at adult Harry, what is his lie?
A4 — That he is still the "Boy Who Lived". Meaning that he believes himself to be, on some level, invincible. What a great place to start with a character!! I can't believe they overlooked this when developing the plot for Cursed Child.
I really want to explore this concept by putting Harry Potter into many different situations. Ultimately, I want him to start questioning his actions based on all that he had experienced while growing up and being a part of Lord Voldemort as a Horcrux. How this affected him as a child and how it still affects him as an adult.
Q5 — What should this story be in the most simplified explanation?
A5 — This script will be about the battle between Harry Potter and Delphini Lestrange, the Augurey and child of the Dark Lord Voldemort. At the core of this story are the themes of conflict, family dynamics, government interference, and an unfortunate, yet illuminating endeavor that crosses barriers of time.
Q6 — What themes from the books should carry on into the 8th story?
A6 — This was always about the battle between good and evil, aided by the indescribable attributes of friendship, love, sacrifice, and loyalty. Harry never forgot this fact. NEVER! Cherishing these things is what set him apart from Voldemort. At the end, these themes should still be perfectly applicable to my script.
Q7 — What are the main questions you wanted the original script of Cursed Child to explore?
A7 — What really happened next? And how does it ALL END?
