My Unbreakable Vow

Oooh, how intriguing... For those who understand, an Unbreakable Vow is a promise, a fateful pledge willingly placed on an individual that binds them mortally to an agreed upon commitment. In other words, I'm dead serious about bringing you the best solution to Cursed Child that I can come up with as a fanfic writer.

Some of you may dislike what I've developed. But...who knows? Maybe I'll end up like Harry and save the day!

It may sound dramatic, but I'm one of those people who believes that if I have the ability to tell a different, perhaps better, version of the 8th story, then I have a responsibility to do so.

Because I know that there's another way. I know that this is no longer a story about a boy growing up. It's a story about a man growing old. And I understand that.

I am that.

Here's my promise: I'm going to produce for you something that is worthy to hold the title of the 8th story. Something that will fit into JKR's vision for her world, because it honors what came before it. Something that could make the fans proud. A script that even JKR could read and say, "Dang...now, that's the 8th story. That's canon!"

She put her faith in Jack Thorne and gave up control of her world, she gave her characters over to people who claimed to be in touch with her canon. They didn't respect that decision or give the saga justice. Not enough. And JKR didn't have a choice but to approve of the story after all that time, energy, and money. She had promised the fans that a play was coming and she couldn't let us down. This is Jo's legacy, and the writer she chose to tell the final chapter failed her.

The story did her, and her characters, a disservice. I am going to remedy that. For Rowling, and for the fans.

I get that I'm a nobody. If JKR is the solar system, I am a grain of sand resting in the shadows of a rock on some cold, distant planet. But had I been given the monumental opportunity to sit at her desk and write the 8th Harry Potter book, I would have done so with such reverence, patience, respect, and gratefulness. I would have heard in my mind every day, "There are hundreds of millions of people who have a personal connection with this. You're treading on hallowed ground. Don't screw it up."

I hear you.

I won't.

"These cultural stories that people have attachments to, they care very much about it. The fans have imagined it, they write fanfiction and get really into it. And they are entitled to those feelings." — Ben Affleck on fan expectations for Batman.

"When you read a book as a child, it becomes a part of your identity...in a way that no other reading in your life does." — Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail.

So, let's pretend that I was hired to do a draft of the play that would address the concerns of her fans. And it makes a little sense, doesn't it? Everyone says that HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD is bad fanfiction. Why not let an author who won a Watty for his Harry Potter fanfic turn it into good fanfiction!? And I know that there are some of you out there who like the play. Give me an opportunity as a writer, as someone who respects and understands the characters intimately, to showcase an alternate version.

And not just for us, but for J.K. Rowling. Because it's a terrible shame that she has to stand by this play. I would love to hand her a reprieve, or a get out of jail free card because Thorne's script is so unlike anything she has ever written. It betrays her reputation and all her many years of hard work.

The Brits have a saying.

"God save the Queen."

Well, if JKR is Queen Jo, and Cursed Child threatens to ruin the legacy of Harry Potter...

Then in steps M. Clifford.

"MOD save the Queen."
