That Malfoy Jerk

Well... This once the title doesn't say it all. You might be thinking that this is a chapter related to Draco and all his mean acts but no. It isn't. In fact this chapter is pretty much related to how the Malfoy jerk also had a human side in him.

I know, some of you hate Malfoy and I'm not blaming you or defending him to be honest, because some of his acts deservingly earned him your hatred. But there were also very subtle moments that showed that poor Draco was just a boy trying to live up to his parent's expectations, the boy who had no choice, the boy who was played like a pawn on a chessboard throughout his life, battling in a war he didn't understand, on a side he never wished to be on, with people he never really wanted to be with in the first place.

Here are a few reasons on why I have suddenly started to sympathize with Draco.

(In no particular order)

1. Draco was secretly jealous of the Golden Trio because he envied their close friendship. True, he had friends such as Crabbe, Goyle, Zabini, Nott and Pansy, but when compared to the Golden Trio, he felt very inferior. Neither of his friends were intelligent and smart as Hermione, none of them were loyal like Ron, none of them had Harry's guts and well... Draco always had to do everything by himself. His friends were more like his cronies or rather people that he was forced to be with due to all that blood purity mania.

2. Remember that infamously Riddikulus class? Yes, of course. Malfoy kept saying the class was ridiculous and did not face the Bogart because he knew that if he went up to the cupboard, the Boggart would take the form of Lucius Malfoy and that would not be very comfortable to face in front of the whole class. Malfoy was afraid of his father, afraid of the power he had, the manipulation he used on his family. Draco must have admired his father at a young age but he was also afraid of what would happen if Lucius turned his wrath on him.

3. He visited Fred Weasley's funeral. He stood at the far back wishing not be seen. Secretly, Malfoy thought that the twins were funny and he felt terrible that he was part of the reason for which Fred died. He felt guilty that he had supported the cause which led to Fred's death and George's loneliness. Draco would never tell anyone he was there and George would never tell anyone he saw him cry, apologizing to a headstone.

4. Malfoy has a sense of what's right and what's wrong. When Harry and the others were brought to the Manor and Hermione had disfigured his face so he couldn't be recognized, Lucius asked his son to tell them if it was Harry or not. Draco knew despite the disfigurement that it was Harry in front of him, but he didn't tell. He simply said that he didn't know. Even though at that moment, lying meant putting his own life at stake.

5. Draco didn't hate the Weasleys. He was just dead envious of them and their close family bonds. He was rich, had an elite status family, had everything people would wish for but secretly he longed for those little family moments of which he had been deprived of his whole life. He was envious of the way the Weasleys had each other's backs, envious of the way Molly cared for her children, envious of how happy they were despite being as poor as church mice.

6. Draco was mildly sympathetic. He befriended Myrtle and treated her as friends do, he shared his distress with her because he knew none of his friends would understand. He trusted her to keep his secret. He was pressurized and threatened, he knew Voldemort would kill his mother if he didn't follow his orders and yet he didn't want to be a murderer. The guilt of being a bully, a jerk, a Death Eater was enough for him. He couldn't bear the thought of being named as a Murderer, a killer, an evil Dark Arts affiliated student who killed his own Headmaster.

7. Draco learnt from his mistakes. After the war, he tried to redeem himself and did his level best to be a good father to Scorpius. Draco achieved the role of a responsible and caring father because he knew what it felt like to be mentally tortured by someone you are inspired of. He did everything his father hadn't done for him and stood by Scorp's side. Till the end. For his son, he was ready to face anything, ready to put up with people spreading rumours about Voldemort's spawn, ready to take the risk of using a time turner to save his son.

8. He stopped believing in blood purity and elite status of wizard families. And Molly being the kind hearted soul that she is, invited him and Scorpius to the Burrow for Christmas and Birthdays. She even sent them Weasley sweaters which were totally the best gift Draco had ever received in his whole life.

There were reasons to why Malfoy was such a jerk. It wasn't entirely his fault. Like Regulus Black he was only trying to live up to his family's expectations, only trying to survive. He wasn't brave enough to stand up to Voldemort like Reg did, but he was brave enough to accept his mistakes and try to redeem himself.
