I don't know if you guys know it yet but Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin were best friends. They were both descended from respected pureblood families and knew each other from ever since they were toddlers.

Many people nowadays like to believe that Salazar was an evil, cold hearted, blood purity obsessed and manipulative monster while in reality he wasn't.

And he didn't build the Chamber for bad intentions. Yeah, really. You can stop thinking about lunging at me for writing that. Good.

During the time when Hogwarts was just made for young witches and wizards, the world wasn't so appreciative of Magic. Majority of people believed that magic was evil sorcery and should be wiped out from the world.

Salazar was only trying to protect his kind. He didn't want Muggle-borns to enter their world and know their secrets because he feared the consequences that might rise if those Muggle-borns told others and the Muggles waged war on them.

He had hidden the basilisk to aid the wizards in that war which he assumed would take place. The monster wasn't there to hurt the students. Because if the sole intention was to wipe out Muggle-borns, it wouldn't have waited to attack for centuries.

Slytherin did not intend for his Heir to cause destruction in the school. Like old legends and rumors, the real fact was buried beneath faulty assumptions. And the whole legend if the Chamber Of Secrets was never told the way it really was.

If Voldemort hadn't decided to believe the rumors and take the so called noble work to completion, the monster would never have bothered anyone. Just like it was present without affecting anything in the first place.
