Mind Talking between Familiar/Bonded
Harry was happy to wake up only to remember that he had class later today, more specifically, he had DADA with Umbridge.
He was seriously going to have to talk with McGonagall who had taken him aside before curfew with Professor Sprout and had told him that Umbridge wasn't going to be letting him teach the younger students like the previous years, much to everyone's dislike.
Instead, Harry was going to take the DADA mastery year and have a goal of creating two of his own spells and help the younger students as a side-project. McGonagall was even clearing out a specific room for him in the dungeons with Severus's agreement. Mostly because for a DADA mastery he needed an actual master for that, and since the beginning, Severus had been his own, they just hadn't really talked to one another more than the few times during the year Harry had to visit Severus about what he was teaching the younger students.
All of which combined made it clear to Harry that compared to other years, this one was probably going to suck the most.
This idea was reaffirmed when he entered DADA.
When they entered the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom they found Professor Umbridge already seated at the teacher's desk, wearing the fluffy pink cardigan of the night before and the black velvet bow on top of her head. Harry was again reminded forcibly of a large fly perched unwisely on top of an even larger toad.
Then she started talking.
"Well now, your teaching in this subject has been rather disrupted and fragmented, hasn't it?" stated Professor Umbridge, turning to face the class with her hands clasped neatly in front of her. "The constant changing of teachers, many of whom do not seem to have followed any Ministry-approved curriculum, has unfortunately resulted in your being far below the standard we would expect to see in your O.W.L. year.
"You will be pleased to know, however, that these problems are now to be rectified. We will be following a carefully structured, theory-centered, Ministry-approved course of defensive magic this year. Copy down the following, please."
Course aims:
1.Understanding the principles underlying defensive magic.
2.Learning to recognize situations in which defensive magic can legally be used.
3.Placing the use of defensive magic in a context for practical use. (- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Page 238-240)
Harry wanted to slam his head down on the table as he read over the course aims. His father might not be the brightest in the world, but he certainly knew certain manipulations and how one words their sentences.
Plus, being friends with Draco and Daphne made Harry even more cautious about how people might say things.
Harry stared at his book for a few minutes, wondering if he actually wanted to read the damn thing in class or not, but he wasn't comfortable, and anyone who ever had to read anything in their life, knew comfort was something you needed if you were to really pay attention to any sort of text.
Well, that and Harry has already read the book front to back and had it memorized in his head ages ago.
So, he sighed under his breath, kept the book closed, and just crossed his arms over the thing and rested his head in it. Slightly hidden from his hands, he smiled as he stared at Umbridge who wasn't looking at the class.
It seemed people had caught onto what he was doing, because more and more as they got tired of trying to read the text, most of his classmates of Hufflepuff and Gryffindor, were staring between him and Hermione who had risen her hand.
When they had gathered enough attention, Umbridge was forced to ask Hermione why she had her hand in the air even as she had lightly glared at Harry.
"Yes, Miss Granger? You wanted to ask something else?"
"Yes," said Hermione. "Surely the whole point of Defense Against the Dark Arts is to practice defensive spells?"
"Are you a Ministry-trained educational expert, Miss Granger?" asked Professor Umbridge in her falsely sweet voice.
"No, but —"
"Well then, I'm afraid you are not qualified to decide what the 'whole point' of any class is. Wizards much older and cleverer than you have devised our new program of study. You will be learning about defensive spells in a secure, risk-free way —"
"What use is that?" said Harry loudly. "If we're going to be attacked it won't be in a —"
"Hand, Mr. Potter!" sang Professor Umbridge.
"No," Harry said as the class seemingly rang in silence and he instantly got his teacher's attention.
"What was that, Mr.Potter?" Umbridge asked almost sweetly.
"First, if you were to address me by my last name, it's Mr.Jackson-Potter, I'm sure you're familiar with that, as a Ministry official after all. Second," Harry leaned forward in his seat, "what makes you think we don't need to know how to use the spells we are reading about?"
"As long as you have studied the theory hard enough, there is no reason why you should not be able to perform the spells under carefully controlled examination conditions," said Professor Umbridge dismissively. (- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Page 242-244)
"Except that's utter bullshit, Professor," Harry said, "Ask any Auror in the world. In fact, you must know the theory to the Patronus Charm, Professor, why don't you show us it?" Harry asked sweetly and could see the interest in many of Gryffindor's eyes as they heard the spell.
"Now, now, I don't see what that has to do with anything," The professor said, her eyes turning hard and something fierce.
"Well, you yourself just said that we only need to know the theory in order to do the spells. Based on that logic, you must know the theory of the Patronus Charm and can cast it yourself?" Harry asked innocently.
"It's a good thing I don't know much about the Patronus Charm, then, isn't it," Umbridge asked with her own twisted smile.
Harry grinned at her showing his teeth. "Then I suppose in order to back your claim that we only need the theory, you should study it and after learning about it for the year, you should be able to cast it successfully, should you not?" Harry inquired.
"Except the Patronus Charm is a difficult spell, Mr.Potter, it takes longer than a year to cast," Umbridge said but Harry could tell he had backed her in a corner.
"Why not? It's just theory isn't it? I learned the theory in a month when I was taught the Patronus Charm, all part of my DADA mastery of course," Harry said knowing Remus could get in trouble for just teaching it to Harry without reason, "I mean, surely it doesn't take you a year to learn the theory. This is the year we are supposed to be learning about them as well, are we not?"
"It is," Umbridge asked through clenched teeth.
"Well, I don't see why you can't perform it by the end of the year, then. Unless, you need to actually practice the spell, Professor?" Harry questioned with a sparkle in his eye.
"I think you've disrupted the class long enough, Mr.Potter, wouldn't want detention, would you?" Umbridge asked, a different gleam in her eye now as if she was almost anticipating Harry's next words.
But Harry knew how to play the game from Draco, and just nodded almost solemnly. "Of course, Professor, you have my deepest apologies. I hadn't known I was disrupting the class since you didn't say anything and kept responding to my questions. My deepest condolences," Harry told her with a fake sympathetic look.
Harry stayed quiet even as Hermione seemed to follow his thoughts without a problem and raised her hand in the air. Merlin, he loved being friends with smart people sometimes.
"Miss.Granger?" Umbridge asked through clenched teeth, looking like she hated children even more than Severus.
"What about real-world application?" Hermione asked.
"This is school, Miss. Granger, not the real world," she said softly.
This time, Harry raised his hand but didn't wait for her to call on him, knowing she wouldn't, "So, we're not supposed to prepare for what is waiting for us out there?" Harry questioned.
"Hand, Mr.Potter," Umbridge asked with a scowl.
"My hand is in the air. Back to the question, why do you think there is nothing waiting for us out there that we shouldn't be worried about knowing the spells?" Harry probed.
"There is nothing waiting out there, Mr. Potter."
"Oh yeah?" said Harry. "Then why do we have Aurors? I mean, if nothing is out there, surely we don't need them?"(- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Page 244)
There were whispers from the students as he said this because it was a good point that Umbridge can't dispute. "We have Aurors so in case something does happen, we have people that can handle it," Umbridge said, an eye-brow twitching.
"But by your logic, Professor," Harry started sweetly, "we don't need to practice these spells because there's nothing out there. Are you saying the Ministry is paying for Aurors when there is no need? That the arrests they constantly make and those that get trials are for nothing? I'm sure the Daily Prophet would love to know this. I can see it now: Ministry Official Teaching Children Thinks Aurors Are Useless and Have No Use."
"Detention, Potter!" Umbridge screeched out.
"For what, Professor?" Harry asked calmly. 1 point for Harry, 0 points for Umbridge.
"For talking without me calling on you," Umbridge snarled out, "and 10 points from Hufflepuff!"
By now, the entire Hufflepuff class was glaring at Umbridge. Because in their eyes, she just attacked one of their members, and Hufflepuffs were loyal to one another.
"Ah, of course. My apologies, I'll let Madam Pomfrey know I cannot make it tonight because I have detention. You may resume class, Professor," Harry said as he went and opened up his textbook finally, acting as if nothing had just happened.
Harry hid his smirk, it might've cost him a detention, but it was well worth it.
