Chapter 45: Moony and his Cub

I do not own Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban or the Percy Jackson series/characters.

Quotes from book

Mind Talking between Familiar/Bonded

With the animagus still in Regina's mouth and frozen, Harry wasn't overly worried about the rat escaping from them.

"Answers," Harry said with a small glare toward the two men. "I think we want an explanation before we continue."

"All right, then," Black said, without taking his eyes off the rat. "Tell them whatever you like. But make it quick, Remus. I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for. . . ."

"There were witnesses who saw Pettigrew die," Neville said as he knew more about the subject than Harry. "A whole street full of them . . ."

"They didn't see what they thought they saw!" said Black savagely, still watching Scabbers in Regina's mouth but not moving closer to her.

"Everyone thought Sirius killed Peter," said Lupin, nodding. "I believed it myself — until I saw the map tonight. Because the Marauder's map never lies . . . Peter's alive. Regina's holding him, Harry."

Harry and Neville made eye-contact, both didn't quite think the story added up but it had sense to it.

"How can Scabbers be Pettigrew? During one of the assignment with Professor McGonagall I wanted to research more about animagus. The Ministry of Magic keeps tabs on witches and wizards who can become animals; there's a register showing what animal they become, and their markings and things . . . and I went and looked Professor McGonagall up on the register, and there have been only seven Animagi this century, and Pettigrew's name wasn't on the list —"

Harry felt proud of his friend for researching the registry for their homework assignment (Harry kinda remembered the assignment, it was given this year but Harry easily completed it just from the number of books he had for learning to become an animagus).

"Uh, Neville, hate to burst your bubble but it's really easy for animagi to not register with the ministry. It's almost laughable how they can't track it," Harry said slightly sheepishly with an innocent look.

Neville just sighed and shook his head before giving Harry a look that they will talk more about this topic later. Lupin just seemed exasperated while Black finally looked away from Regina and the rat just to raise an eyebrow at Harry, his mouth twitching upward slightly in amusement.

"If you're going to tell them the story, get a move on, Remus," snarled Black, who was still watching Scabbers. "I've waited twelve years, I'm not going to wait much longer."

"All right . . . but you'll need to help me, Sirius," said Lupin, "I only know how it began . . ."(- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Page 350-352)

"Or, you could easily answer this one question and then tell me the rest when we're not in a shack in the middle of the night," Harry said as a thought entered his mind. He wondered how he could've forgotten.

Instantly, all attention was on him. "What question would that be?" Black asked cautiously.

"When I was born, did you do a Godfather Oath," Harry asked Sirius seriously. Neville sucked in breath and looked wide eyed at Black. Having grown up as a Pureblood and with his Grandmother making sure he knew about the politics of the Magical World, would know what a Godfather Oath entitled.

"Yes, of course. Why wouldn't I?" Black asked with a confused look, some of the crazy look he had before was starting to disappear as he focused more on Harry rather than the rat.

"Then say the words. Right here, right now. I want the exact wording," Harry said without pausing, staring into Black's eyes without hesitation.

"I, Sirius Orion Black, promise my life and magic to you, Hadrian James Potter, under the eyes of our Mother Magic herself, to fulfill the Godfather Duties. To stand by your side, to share and support your hopes and dreams. I vow with everything of me to always be there for you as much as I can, to catch you when you fall, to comfort you when you cry, and to share your joy when you laugh. No matter what lies ahead of us, I will fulfill my duties to you as Godfather and will never harm you willingly. So mote it be." Sirius said without hesitation.

While the others might not feel the power of the words, Harry felt an old bond in his core activated. A tether almost, connecting him and Sirius. Sirius had done the Godfather ritual, because this oath had strict requirements.

Harry watched as Sirius took in a sharp breath, likely also feeling the tether that connected the two flare back to life after not having contact for over twelve years. The insanity that had been hiding just behind his eyes was mostly gone, his grey eyes sparkling under the full moon light.

Harry himself felt relaxed as he closed his eyes and soaked in the magic. Of the feeling of safety that rang through the bond he shared with his godfather.

"Harry?" Neville quietly asked Harry as he took in his best friends reaction to the oath. He shifted as he finally felt the powerful magic in the air (probably mostly from Harry himself) settle slightly.

"He did the oath," Harry muttered back, blinking his eyes as he felt slightly drunk on magic. Sirius didn't look that much better, as he leaned against Remus as both their magics calmed down.

Harry wondered if the bond had been slightly activated that night he found Snuffles. He was usually so alert when it came to magic, that when he and Neville first figured out Snuffles probably wasn't actually Snuffles why his magic didn't warn him.

Now though, Harry knew it was because his magic deep within him in the bond that was going dormant that it knew Snuffles would never harm Harry.

In fact, it was probably why Snuffles even approached Harry instead of just watching from a distance. His own magic probably knew that Harry would feel more compelled to help him (even if he wasn't an animal).

"We need to go to a professor," Harry said as he slightly regained his ground. The drunk magic was starting to wear off him, though Sirius still looked extremely drunk. His mind probably torn up a bit from the dementors that he was having trouble focusing and getting out of the drunk magic.

"What do you have planned?" Neville asked as Regina slithered to her Bond-Mate as he extended his arm for her to slide on.

"Do the spell every five minutes as you walk to Hogwarts. Go to Professor McGonagall or Flitwick, they would have the best knowledge of the animagus reversal and petrification spells. They can also call the aurors so Peter, if it really is him, can't escape. Take Sirius as Snuffles with you, though you should probably hide him as much as you can. I'm going to get Lupin in the woods," Harry said as Regina slithered on his arm, the middle of the rat still clutched in her mouth. "Take Regina with you, if Peter does try to escape she will petrify him herself, it's alright, she won't harm you. Only Peter."

Neville nodded and extended his arm out with slight hesitancy. But he knew Regina wouldn't hurt him, they've been sleeping in the same dorm for the whole year and Regina has not even gone on his bed. Neville knew none of Harry's creatures would hurt him, they cared too much about Harry to dare hurt those he cares about, and Neville was pretty sure Harry cared about him.

With Regina wrapped around his shoulders with the rat in her mouth, Neville walked toward his professor. It took a bit of coaxing, but Sirius did end up changing into Snuffles and stumbled his way with Neville toward Hogwarts.

"Why are we heading into the forest then?" Remus asked Harry, he was slightly confused but trusted Harry to know what he was doing. The boy had a good head on his shoulders and was clearly smart and had a plan.

Harry looked slightly amused at his teacher. "Do you know what day it is?"

"Thursday," Remus said with a confused look.

"Huh uh, and what moon cycle is it?" Harry asked as he pointed to the sky and watched as his professor's face turned to realization before horror.

"Harry, you need to go. It's too dangerous," Remus said as he finally acknowledged the pull of the moon he was having on him.

Harry shook his head. "I know that animagus can be with werewolves on the full moon, Professor, Boris has told me constantly."

"You aren't an animagus though, Harry, it's far too dangerous," Remus worriedly said.

Amused, Harry made sure he had his Professor's attention before changing into his Animagus Form. Harry rubbed against his Professor's legs, a small purr emitting from him, as he took in the stock still shock his professor was going through.

"Harry," Remus said dangerously. "We will be having a talk later about turning into an animagus at the age of 13. It's far too dangerous to do-" Remus was cut off from his rant by the pull of the moon.

His bones cracking under themselves and rearranging hurt Harry's ears slightly, but the sound was hardly his torture, Remus had to feel the brunt of the breaking and rearranging.

So, Harry stood back and out of the transformation, knowing Remus' wolf wouldn't know him and probably get defensive. Especially as it wasn't with pack tonight.

Remus changed quickly into his wolf form, if Harry had to estimate the size of the wolf, he would probably compare it as smaller than a direwolf from his dad's favorite show Game of Thrones but was bigger than a normal wolf. It had the wolf appearance but was clearly bigger than a normal wolf and especially bigger than Harry.

Feeling slightly threatened at the size difference, Harry jumped on the bed that Sirius had rested against when they were talking but stayed tense in case Remus tried to kill him before accepting him.

-------------------------

Moony woke rather quickly. He noted the transformations were going a lot smoother since he's been with Alpha and his pack. But he did note he was in his other transformation spot. The one he had when he was younger with Non-Eating Deer, Play Dog, and Annoying Rat. Tense and wondering why he was here, Moony reviewed the few memories Remus had.

Ah, Play Dog didn't betray them? That was good. He would have to check the next time of transformation of Remus' memory to make sure, but Moony would give his pack member the benefit of the doubt.

There was an odd scent by him though, so Moony stood up and quickly smelled where the scent was coming from.

He couldn't quite pin who the scent belonged to, but he noted the cat on the bed that he wasn't allowed on. Tilted his head, Moony stepped closer and saw that the cat had tensed even further.

That wouldn't do. He just wanted to smell him, maybe figure out what the scent was, but he supposed he might be able to work from here.

Staying put, Moony but his nose to the air and tried to take a deep breath through his nose. Drats, there was no wind, the scent wasn't close enough for him to place.

The cat seemed to understand what he wanted thankfully, because it got up from it's resting place and took a few hesitant steps toward Moony.

Moony took one step himself, which was like three for the cat, and extended his muzzle toward the cat that had stayed tensed but stayed put.

Sniffing the cat carefully, Moony felt joy within himself. Cub! It was his cub! Remus gave a small happy bark before running his tongue over his cub. Why his cub was a cat he didn't know, but that's alright, because cub was with him!

The cat seemed startled to suddenly have a wet head, but purred and butted heads under Moony's chin. Good cub! Scenting was good! Moony carefully grabbed the extra fur behind his cub's neck and picked him up.

The cat had meowed curiously and picked his paws up, thankfully not putting up much of a fuss. Moony went toward the ladder that went down the next level, looking at it cautiously, he estimated the height of the jump and crouched low.

Being lower toward the ground would help, with his head fitting through the gap, Moony carefully angled his body and let it drop out through the hole.

Quickly he caught himself on the feet and set his cub down carefully to lick his head softly. Quietly asking if he was okay.

Cub had purred and rubbed his body along Moony's and headbutted his large legs. With the confirmation that his cub was fine, Moony picked cub back up before heading toward the doors that lead to the Town He Must Not Ever Go To.

Moony looked at the knob and frowned. It was one of those turning knobs, he wouldn't be able to open the doors in this form. Remus could, but Moony's paws couldn't grip the knob like Remus.

He couldn't exactly go through the Willow tree either, the passageway was too small for his body, when he was smaller and still growing he could, but as a fully grown wolf he knew it would be too uncomfortable for him to go through.

Was he stuck here? He hoped not, he wanted to show cub his territory here. Though, he relented that it probably wasn't his territory anymore, but that was alright, he still could show his cub around and kill anything that tried to hurt them.

Cub seemed to have a solution for them though, he meowed enough until Moony set him down before stepping away from Moony. When Moony tried to follow cub had glared at him.

Confused, Moony let Cub do his thing. He tilted his head when cub had changed through. He looked through Remus' memories and realized Cub could change like Non-Eating Deer, Play Dog, and Annoying Rat. That made things easier!

Giving a happy bark, Moony watched as cub opened the door before changing back into his small form. Wagging his tail, Moony picked cub back up before nosing the door open.

Turning away from Town He Must Not Ever Go To, Moony looked toward the forest line that had quite a few dangers in there. Happily, he pranced toward the forest, his tail wagging the entire time.

When he felt they were far enough away from the Hurtful Flesh School, Moony finally set Cub down. He looked at cub before figuring he would want to play.

So, after a bit of hesitation from Cub, they finally played around. There were no other cubs to play with his cub, but that was okay, he would make sure cub wore himself out before bringing food to cub. He wondered what he should get. He was Non-Eating Deer's cub, so deer was out of the question. Perhaps a rabbit? He might be able to find one. He just hoped he didn't scare them away.

They played for a while, a version of some of the games that Play Dog and Non-Eating Deer enjoyed doing during his transformations. When he tried to cub to eat though, cub refused. Moony felt a little worried that his cub would go hungry but let it be, sometimes his other packmates weren't that hungry either. Maybe it was one of those times?

Shaking his head, he rested under a tree as cub walked around and played with some of the insects around. Resting his head on his paw, Moony sleepily felt content as his cub was with him during his transformation.

Before he would rest his eyes though, cub also needed sleep. Giving out a sleepy boof, Moony saw cub look at him curiously but wasn't going to him. It took another boof before cub finally walked toward him.

Moony stood up for the moment to grab cub by his neck again and drag him closer to the ground. Trapping him between his paws, Moony gave cub a quickly lick on his head before nuzzling cub to curl between his front paws.

Cub did so reluctantly but had a soft purr as Moony set his head on cub's body. Trapping him in a warm embrace. It was nap time, Moony thought as he yawned before letting his eyes close.

Note: Alright the Godfather Oath was actually a marriage oath that has the title of: Stand by Your Side that I actually really liked. It's from here just with some different word choice: http://www.younghipandmarried.com/ceremonies/wedding-vows/
