Chapter 41: The Patronus

I do not own Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban or the Percy Jackson series/characters.

Quotes from book

Mind Talking between Familiar/Bonded

With New Years over, Harry and Professor Lupin finally got to the point where Lupin felt confident enough that they could move from the theory to the practical part of learning the Patronus.

At eight o'clock on Thursday evening, Harry left Hufflepuff Common Room for the History of Magic classroom. It was dark and empty when he arrived, but he lit the lamps with his wand and had waited only five minutes when Professor Lupin turned up, carrying a large packing case, which he heaved onto Professor Binns' desk.

"What's that?" said Harry.

"Another boggart," said Lupin, stripping off his cloak. "I've been combing the castle ever since our last lesson regarding them, and very luckily, I found this one lurking inside Mr. Filch's filing cabinet. It's the nearest we'll get to a real dementor. The boggart will turn into a dementor when he sees you, so we'll be able to practice on him. I can store him in my office when we're not using him; there's a cupboard under my desk he'll like."

"Okay," said Harry, trying to sound as though he wasn't apprehensive at all and merely glad that Lupin had found such a good substitute for a real dementor.(- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Page 237)

"Remember to focus on a very happy memory," Lupin said as he stood to the side of the packing case, reading to release to boggart.

Harry took a deep breath and closed his eyes. What would be a significant good memory. Maybe the day he left the Durselys?

Thinking of the memory, Harry opened his eyes and nodded to his professor who opened the case.

Immediately, the air became cooler and the fake magic similar to a dementor leaked from the case as Harry came face to face with the Dementor the Boggart turned into.

Steeling himself, Harry focused on the memory and tried the spell.

"Expecto Patronum," shouted Harry.

Silvery wisp exited his wand, like it was in gas form, and blasted against the dementor. The fake dementor flinched back, but it didn't seem enough as it continued on its way.

"Riddikulus," Harry said again, feeling paler and was losing some feeling in his fingers.

The boggart was driven back into the case so Harry and his professor could talk more without worrying about it.

"Very nice work," Lupin said, his tone portraying how proud he was, "You got the wisp which is far more than some other magicals have gotten. It's just not as strong enough to really push back a dementor. What type of memory did you choose, if you don't mind me asking?" Lupin asked as he leaned against Professor Binns desk.

"It was the day my dad got my away from the Dursleys. Though, looking back, those feelings were more curious and scared with hope. I don't think it's quite happy memories for me, at least not the in-the-moment memory that we're searching for," Harry explained.

Lupin was nodding and seemed thoughtful. "Are most of your happy memories with your father?"

"That's correct," confirmed Harry.

"Then perhaps, was there a certain day that you went somewhere, or he might've given something to you, that has a lot of sentimental value. Something that every time you think about makes you happy?" Lupin asked

Harry went quiet for a moment. The only thing he thought would draw enough power for the patronus charm was special to him. "I think I have it professor, can we test it," Harry asked quietly.

While he trusted his professor, he felt slightly embarrassed over his answer. He didn't want to say it in case he really wasn't the memory he was looking for.

Lupin examined Harry softly before nodding and straightened from the desk. They both moved back over to the case that held the boggart.

Harry nodded when he was in front of the case and the boggart was released.

Steeling himself from the harsh emotions of the dementor, Harry concentrated his heart out on the memory.

The soft Christmas day the year after his father got him from the Dursleys. Harry had carefully opened all the presents and they were set aside carefully.

But there was one by Percy. The man had drawn Harry into his lap, still too thin from his malnourished time at the Dursleys.

"Harry, I got you something that I want your opinion on. You can say no, or you can say yes. But I want to put it on the table for you anytime. Alright?" Percy asked softly as Harry melted in Percy's arms, still getting use to (but loving) loving contact.

"Okay," Harry replied softly, still hesitant about speaking his thoughts out but getting far more use to it.

Percy nodded and brought a yellow long envelope from the table next to the couch and handed it to the young boy.

"Open it," Percy said softly as his left hand steady Harry on his knee while the right helped the young boy opened the envelope.

Harry remembered his breath leaving as he realized what he was reading. It was the forums to be adopted.

The pure amazement, happiness, and most of all love filled him. Harry remembered throwing his arms around Percy's neck, saying yes many times over.

He remembered his father's smile, the pure love that was shared between the two. Percy helped Harry fill out the forums that very night, to boy urging it throughout the day until it was dinner when Percy finally put the time aside to help.

Feeling the love enter his body as he smiled at the memory. Harry allowed the spell to flow out of him naturally.

"Expecto Patronum," Harry whispered. He felt no need to shout it, the dark memories the Dementor was making him was at the back of his mind.

His father was in the front, and drawing most of his attention away from any bad memories.

Instead of the silvery wisp like last time, this time it formed into something. Harry had expected the Lynx to show up, or possibly one of his familiars since familiars are closely related to the person's soul and magic too.

But there was no dragon, basilisk, or lynx. Instead, Harry felt confused because it was an animal he only read about in his Fantastic Beasts book. The patronus he had was a Niffler that charged the dementor.

The Dementor was pushed back into the case, until finally the darkness faded as the Niffler approached Harry.

"Hello," he said calmly. He felt the spell still activated in his magical core, but he didn't mind. He was more curious then worried about his core draining.

The Niffler nuzzled Harry's hand before scrambling up his arm and resting on his head.

"Excellently done, Harry," Lupin said with wide eyes that shine with pride.

"Thank you, Professor," Harry said earnestly as he let his magic let go of the spell. The Niffler let one last nuzzle in before disappearing in a soft silvery wisps until there was nothing that showed she was once there.

"I'm going to go show Neville!" Harry said with excitement as he realized what it meant to do the patronus charm.

Lupin just chuckled as Harry ran out of the room, forgetting to even question the boy about what his memory was.

"Neville!" Harry shouted excitedly at the boy outside who was walking toward the Greenhouses.

"Harry?" Neville asked curiously. It's been a bit of time since he's seen Harry this fired up about something.

"I learned the spell," Harry said excitedly.

Neville had a puzzled face with a small tilt of his head. He didn't say it, but Neville asked Harry for more context. Last he knew, Harry mastered any spell he wanted without much effort, so what spell was he talking about?

"The patronus charm," Harry said with a slight roll of his eyes, but there was still a large grin on his face.

"Really! Cool," Neville said as Harry dragged him away from where prying eyes might be. Neville wondered for a second if they should grab the others before he felt happiness arise in him.

He realized that out of their whole group, Harry went to him first to show him the charm. Neville never had anyone choose him out of anyone else before. Pride and honor filled him as he smiled at his friend that was practically bursting with energy.

They went to the edge of the Forbidden Forest before stopping and Harry turned to Neville, practically jumping in his shoes.

"Expecto Patronum," Harry said as he pulled out his wand and aimed his toward the treeline.

Like last time, the Niffler appeared excitedly and started to run around Harry and Neville.

"Woah," Neville whispered with wide eyes. "That's so cool!'

"I know right! I could totally scare Draco with her! Maybe at least," Harry thoughtfully said.

Neville just shook his head in amusement. Whenever Harry got too bored with his classes (which was less often thankfully with his full schedule) he had a habit of playing some pranks that ended with people blaming the twins despite them having an alibi.

"Don't let Snape figure out you're behind those pranks. He's been taking out his anger about the Pink Dress Robes on the twins, you don't want that anger toward you," Neville warned.

"Snape loves me," Harry declared thinking about how exasperated the man could be toward Harry, but never anger.

"If you say so," Neville said rolling his eyes.

The two boys played with the ghost-like Niffler. They eventually wandered just a little too far into the forest because they had found Solar surprisingly. The Unicorn that Harry had saved in his first year.

"Solar!" Harry said excitedly as he wrapped his arms around the Unicorns neck. Maybe his understanding of water creatures was still fully developing, but Harry was waiting for the day that he could understand horses, because then maybe he could fully talk to Solar.

Solar had watched over the two third years as they ran around and played a version of tag and hide and seek. That was, until they became too tired.

Not joining in their fun, Solar had knelt and rested on the ground. Which meant that when the boys had become tired and breathing heavily, they lent against the Unicorn.

They were quietly enjoying the peace when the foliage to their right started shifting slightly. Enough that it wasn't noticeable to the two boys but had the Unicorn on high alert and shifted slightly enough to quickly stand up and use her horn if needed.

A spell was on the tip of Solar's tongue when the foliage parted to reveal a black dog looking worried.

The dog seemed to sigh in relief to the Unicorns confusion before the two boys finally noticed him.

"Snuffles!" Harry said excitedly as he quickly got up and threw his arms around the dog's neck. "Where were you?"

"I think the real question is, how did he get here and how long has he been here?" Neville said warily but kept leaning against the unicorn

"I'm just happy he's safe," Harry muttered as he buried his face in the dog's neck.

Snuffles had nuzzled Harry's head before pushing him toward the Unicorn and Neville.

Harry softly chuckled, his eyes watery as the relief for his missing dog was over.

"Come on, it's getting late. We're going to need to figure out how to sneak him into our dorms," Neville said as he moved from Solar and stood up. Dusting his hands the trio, Neville, Harry, and Snuffles, moved toward Hogwarts.

"I think I can cause enough of a commotion that you can sneak him in, deal?" Harry asked as they got closer to the castle.

"Deal," Neville said, thankful that he doesn't have to make the distraction this time.

Note: There may be questions regarding why Harry's patronus is a Niffler. But there is a reason for it and I have hinted it slightly throughout the book since roughly second and third year. It wasn't over said so I don't expect many of you guys to get it, but there are slight hints that I have made. Just know, there is a reason why the patronus is a Niffler. According to my information guide about all of Harry's animals and animals to come, it might get explained around Year 5 with Umbridge.
