Chapter 40: Christmas

I do not own Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban or the Percy Jackson series/characters.

Quotes from book

Mind Talking between Familiar/Bonded

After the second encounter with the Dementors, Harry was even more determined to create a Patronus. The problem was, that with classes edging toward Christmas holidays, there was homework after class nearly all the time so students didn't have to worry about too much homework over the holidays..

The work, combined with the Full Moon days, Harry had barely any time to work with Professor Lupin toward the practical part of learning a patronus.

Most of what they had been doing was making sure Harry understood the theory behind the patronus, so the two often debated with each other based upon books they read about the subject.

Harry didn't exactly mind it, because sometimes his professor knew more than the books, but he was also frustrated with the fact they weren't actually trying to do the charm yet.

Shaking his head to dislodge his wandering mind, Harry focused back on the present and got on the train for the winter holidays.

Their whole group was heading home for the holidays this year, unlike last where Draco, Blaise, and Daphne had stayed behind to learn more about the chamber and Basilisk.

The only thing different was the fact that Daphne had brought her little sister in their compartment.

Astoria Greengrass was like a carbon copy of Daphne when they were in their first years. Their grey eyes, border-line silver, was shining brightly in any lighting but hid their emotions.

Her dark brown hair was long and curly that went just below her shoulder blades like her sister. Harry knew that Astoria was the Ice Queen of her year, following in her sisters steps.

"So, what brings you to our chaotic compartment?" Harry asked with a smile as Astoria sat between Daphne and Blaise.

"My friends are staying at Hogwarts. It was either this or deal with the idiots from my year," Astoria said smoothly.

Harry felt amusement in him as she called her classmates idiots, but he wasn't too surprised.

He was teaching them after all, and he had to say that Astoria was probably the smartest in their year.

"Well, if you have any questions, you can ask any of us. We're generally beating our way to first spot for our year," Blaise joked as he relaxed in his seat.

"Who are you trying to beat?" Astoria asked curiously.

"This one here is always first. Smartest Wizard in our year while Daphne is smartest Witch. We just try and keep up with them, "Draco said with a smirk as Harry blushed lightly at the reminder.

For the past two years, Harry had beaten his classmates easily for the first place, even with his full schedule. In second place was generally between Daphne, Draco, or Hermione (to the brunettes frustration) while Neville, Blaise, and sometimes Theo close behind.

It wasn't surprising to see them at the top of their school's grade leaderboard that is posted in each common room and magically updated.

(Though, Harry thought maybe Hogwarts screwed with others at times, because he swears he sees his name toward the top of the year leaderboard for fourth and fifth years)

From their, their topics moved from school toward their planned holidays.

-------------------------

Because his dad was helping out some sea creatures that had gotten dangerously tangled in nets and fishing hooks in America, after a long talk, Harry was going to spend the first week of holidays in the Weasley Family before heading Christmas Day to his house where his Dad would be home again.

It was a bit weird, Harry only knew of Ginny through talks with Luna (though she did warn him that Ginny had a bit of hero-worship about him) and that Ron was still a bit arrogant regarding some things but was mostly jealous). Harry started to think of Fred and George, after the sleepover on the Great Hall, as friends. The trios having connected through Fred and George questioning Harry about certain spells and potions and what-if moments regarding said spells and potions.

Harry was sure that they were going to use their knowledge from him to make pranks, but Harry thought that it would be better to have the knowledge than not have it and endanger their lives through testing.

So, when the train finally stopped at the train station, Harry waved to Draco (who he couldn't stay with because they were leaving for their own vacation to a small house (shocking) along a secluded Muggle beach), Daphne, Astoria, and Blaise who were also going on vacations themselves.

That left Luna and Neville. Neville said goodbye before walking to his grandma and sinking into her arms. After their guardians had arrived after the Dementors, each child sunk gratefully into their guardians arms, still shaken but feeling much better.

Neville and his grandma had mended a bridge that neither were aware was broken. Neville was even surprised to find out that his uncle that had dropped him from the Manor window had actually been disowned. Neville had just assumed the man got away scotch-free for showing that Neville actually had magic (apparently though, his grandma always knew, there was only so much a baby could sneak into the Greenhouse without the House Elves eventually telling their guardian about it if they had helped their charge).

Luna had grabbed Harry's arm and both started walking toward the clan of red-heads that were saying hello. Luna catching a ride with them as her house was near theirs and her father was currently writing a paper for the next day.

"Hello," Harry said awkwardly as he approached Mrs.Weasley and Mr.Weasley.

"Oh look at you dear, a bag of bones I swear. Come here," Mrs.Weasley said then brought Harry into a hug.

Blushing madly because the twins weren't helping his predicament, Harry awkwardly stood there. This was perhaps a bit too much touching for him and he was starting to feel a panic attack approach him.

Maybe the twins realized Harry was starting to get pale, but they stopped making fun of the boy and shared looks before Fred said, "Geez mom, you're going to choke him to death if you keep at it. You haven't even said hello to Luna yet."

Mrs.Weasley fretted and Harry drew a long breath as he was released and noted Luna was now in a hug from Mrs.Weasley. The difference seemed that Luna didn't mind the hug and actually had a small smile dancing her lips as she hugged Mrs.Weasley back.

"You alright?" George whispered as they stayed by Harry's side.

Harry still felt the creeping panic attack, but it was slowly going away. "I need to go outside sooner than later," Harry said softly, hoping the words weren't as choked as they felt.

Fred nodded and the twins seemed to help move things along surprisingly. Because Harry felt the hook feeling of Side-Apparation (something he got used to with the Malfoys using it to travel with Harry and Percy to some Wizard places) before he was in front of the Weasley home.

Feeling the wind on his cheeks, Harry took in a shaky breath and allowed the claustrophobic feeling fade.

It looked as though it had once been a large stone pigpen, but extra rooms had been added here and there until it was several stories high and so crooked it looked as though it were held up by magic (which, Harry reminded himself, it probably was). Four or five chimneys were perched on top of the red roof. A lopsided sign stuck in the ground near the entrance read, the burrow. Around the front door lay a jumble of rubber boots and a very rusty cauldron. Several fat brown chickens were pecking their way around the yard. (-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets page 32)

Breathing became easier as the creeping feeling of his chest being pressed was gone. Soon, he didn't feel any panic attack approaching him if he stopped a foot inside the house.

More confident, Harry walked in the house with the rest of the Weasley's.

It reminded him slightly of his Grandma Sally's apartment slightly. The first floor had the open floor plan that Harry thought most confined spaces had. It was a room that was split (but not by walls except for the bathroom) between the kitchen, dining room, and then the living room.

"Come on, we can show you some more stuff we're working on," George whispered to Harry before dragging him and Fred upstairs.

Their room was as chaotic as Harry thought it might be. There were ingredients along a shelf on a wall, an unlit cauldron in the corner with heavy wards around it. It seemed their father had found out what a bunk-bed was because the twins had one, and Harry noted that by their bed along the floor was blankets and pillows if Harry had decided to sleep with the twins (they had said he could room with Ron, but Harry didn't feel quite comfortable doing so).

They also had a surprising amount of books as well, Harry figured some were copies from the library at Hogwarts or they had bargained from somewhere in Knockturn Alley (he wouldn't put it past them) but they were mostly under their bed and along a shelf by their ingredients.

Harry thought that he could get use to this.

-------------------------

Harry hung out with the twins for a while, but as time went, he started to feel a bit more claustrophobic and was itching to go outside. So, he slipped out of the room while Fred and George had been debating on what they should test.

Harry managed to slip past all the members of the house as he went out the backdoor and found a small downhill that Harry assumed would lead him to Luna's house if he so wished.

But, he knew Luna would be having a great time with her father and didn't want to bother her. He found a smooth part of the hill and laid down.

Knowing they were alone, Harry felt Lunar shifted from his shoulder until she was resting on his chest as he stared up at the clouds above him.

His left arm was behind his head as his right softly pet Lunar who was basking in the heat from the sun and Harry's soft attention.

"Dinner almost ready," said a warm voice behind Harry.

It startled the boy enough to tilt his head back to see who talked. "Charlie?" Harry asked recognizing the features as the twins brother that joined Percy and Harry their Christmas Party during Harry's first year.

"Hello, Harry," Charlie said with a grin before looking startled at Lunar. "I don't recognize that type of dragon. Though, I suppose I should ask why a dragon is sleeping on your chest."

"This is Lunar, my familiar," Harry said as Lunar cooed from her spot but looked at Charlie curiously.

Both of his familiars knew that when they talked when Harry was talking to another person, it became more difficult for him to decide which conversation to focus on. So sometimes they let their body language and emotions talk more than the actual bond they share that allows them to communicate verbally.

"How old is she?" Charlie asked curiously as he sat next to Harry and cautiously held out a hand toward Lunar.

"Roughly three years old now," Harry commented as Lunar sniffed Charlie's fingers before rumbling as she butted her head against his hands and demanded for attention.

"Three years! She's very small if she is," Charlie said with worry in his voice.

"Like I said, she's my familiar. She explained it that she adjusts her size to be this small so when she does make an appearance, she doesn't break a house," Harry said with a grin.

Charlie nodded but still looked like he had questions. "Charlie, Harry! Come on, Dinner's ready," shouted another redhead from the back porch of the Weasley Home.

"That's Bill," Charlie explained as he stood up and brushed his hands against his trousers before extending a hand to help Harry.

"I don't think I've met him," Harry said curiously. "What does he do? I know you said you work on a dragon reserve in...Romania, I think?"

"Very good memory, yeah Romanian Dragon Reserve, absolutely the best job there is in my opinion. Bill works with Grigotts as a Curse-Breaker," Charlie explained.

Harry instantly lit up with excitement. For a curse-breaking job the man would've taken Ancient Runes and Arithmancy, maybe Harry could bounce some of the questions he had off the man during dinner.

Lunar seemed to take this as the time to hide back into Harry's skin and Harry could see Charlie had more questions as Lunar moved toward his shoulder, her tail curling and landing near a sleeping Regina.

Charlie and Harry entered the house and Harry noted the chaos that seemed to be happening. Mrs.Weasley was in the kitchen, using magic left and right to finish off the last bits of dinner cooking, while Mr.Weasley was at the table talking with Percy Weasley about the Ministry. Ron and Ginny seemed to be having an intense discussion about Quidditch.

Harry swore he heard Fred and George upstairs causing chaos in their room as they tried to wrap up some of their experiments. Which left Bill who was waiting on Charlie and Harry by the door.

"Hello, Bill Weasley at your service," Bill said with a grin as he extended his hand for Harry to shake.

"Harry Jackson-Potter," Harry said with a similar grin. "I was wondering if I could ask some questions about Ancient Runes off you. Maybe some Arithmancy?"

"I'm sure I can help you," Bill said.

From there, dinner went about as expected to Harry. There was a designated chaos that was happening that he was still getting use to, and halfway through Harry was starting to feel a bit light-headed from being pressed shoulder to shoulder with Fred on his right and Charlie on his left.

He had to excuse himself with the image of going to the bathroom before he slipped out the back way.

Breathing deeply for a few minutes, Harry tried to suppress the panic that he was starting to feel. A few more deep breaths and setting his hands along the wooden porch to center himself, Harry started to feel a bit better.

"You alright?" Bill Weasley asked as he poked his head out the door.

"Uh, yeah. I'll be back in, in a sec," Harry awkwardly said.

"Figured you didn't go to the bathroom, seeing as the door is wide open. This made the most sense," Bill explained.

"Sorry. Just needed air," explained Harry with a small blush at being caught.

Bill just gave Harry an understanding smile. "We started to see you get a bit pale there. Mom was about ready to head to you to see if you were sick. But you're not sick are you...not use to tight places are you?" asked Bill softly.

Harry shook his head and stared anywhere expect Bill, the feeling of shame creeping up on him along with the dark thoughts of self-hatred his father worked so hard to get him to stop thinking about.

"Hey, it's alright. Everyone is afraid of something in their life. Ginny with embarrassing herself, Ron with spiders, the twins with not feeling useful. Percy feeling like all there is to his name is his last name along with our money status. You're not alone, and never be ashamed of yourself or who you are," Bill said kindly as he laid a hand softly on Harry's shoulder. Allowing the boy to move it if felt uncomfortable with it there.

"Thank you," Harry said sincerely. While the darker thoughts still lingered, along with the shame, it didn't feel as pressing as it once was.

Steeling himself, he walked with Bill back toward the table. Everyone acted like nothing occurred (though, Harry thought that maybe Ron and Ginny didn't realize something was wrong).

Harry thought he might be able to enjoy his stay at the Weasley Family.

-------------------------

Christmas day was a weird affair for him, while the Weasley's opened their own present, Harry was itching to get the floo call about heading home so he could open presents with his dad.

During their initial conversation, his dad had said he could open presents with the Weasley family if he wished, but Harry didn't want to. It was their tradition to open presents together. Sure the time wouldn't be when both were awake, but Harry wasn't going to ruin the tradition that had stuck with him when he found out he had presents.

"Are you sure your okay, dear?" Mrs.Weasley asked in concern.

"I'm quite alright, Mrs.Weasley. My dad and I had argued a lot about it, but in the end I won with saying I was alright waiting for him," Harry told Mrs.Weasley with a small smile.

Harry, thankful that the Weasley's let him stay to Christmas, had gotten each of them something from him. He had to sneak it under the tree in case Mrs.Weasley tried to fret about the fact he didn't have to get them anything.

He got Mrs.Weasley two cookbooks, one being his grandma's favorite recipes she loved to use, and the other a common mundane cooking book. Half of it was desserts while the other half being for the other meal times.

Mr.Weasley got a book about Mundane technology and how it's advanced through the years. The book was created by a Muggleborn in America that had went to University with the focus of technology and explaining it to Purebloods or even some Half-Bloods.

Bill he had gotten a book on Greek Curse-Breaking and the similarities and differences it has to it's Latin counterpart.

Charlie was a bit more difficult until Harry found a branch outside that had surprisingly width before whittling the wood down to a dragon figure. From there, he talked with bill about a run configuration to animate the dragon. So, Harry painted the wood and carefully and set the wood in a clear substance to hold the figure before activating the runes. All the dragon could do was breath fire and open its wings, but Harry counted it as a success.

While Harry was sure Percy would've loved books about subjects he was taking, Harry thought the boy could use a reminder that not everyone in a position of power meant well for others. So, he had gotten Percy a book about the Dark Ministry Workers Through the Ages and Their Impact. It was originally written in French, as the French Ministry had wrote about the Britain one seeing as they weren't going to do it, but Harry had Leo make a translated version using similar technology to the Demigod Glasses.

Fred had gotten book on Charms Through the Ages that explained how charms had changed through the ages and how the Greek version of Charms had a lot more ranges than the Latin Charms. Harry was certain he would use some for their prank products.

George had gotten a similar book but in transfiguration and potions. Seeing as how George was better at transfiguration and potions, while Fred was better at Charms and Herbology (Harry was waiting for the author to release the Herbology version that explained different techniques in taking care of the plants lead to different results).

After a debate and talking with the twins, Harry had gotten Ron a Nimbus Two-Thousand and a broom and wand care kit. He wasn't sure if he would use the wand kit, but he was sure someone in his family would.

Ginny received a similar gift that Ron had gotten, along with a book he made himself about his life. If the girl wanted to have a crush on him, he would at least make sure it wasn't because of the foolish books that they created based upon him for younger children. Admittedly, he heavily edited it to keep out most of the abuse, but he thought the girl would at least get the picture. At the end, he added his telephone number in case she wanted to talk about what she read. He hoped it wouldn't increase the crush that she seemed to have on him, and perhaps open her eyes.

After that, Harry thought a lot about if he wanted to do anything else for them. So, he talked a lot with his father and using the Casino Card, he opened up a Trust Fund for each Weasley, including the parents having their own. It would be for future career or schooling they planned to do. Hell, it could be used on something as simple as chocolate for all they cared. It was a thanks from the Jackson Family to the Weasley Family.

They would get the alert from Gringotts later that night from an owl. He knew that if the owl came any sooner that they would try to give the present back as soon as they heard, so he made sure it was after he was gone. The owl would also come with a note explaining that it was a gift, and not pity. They thought higher of each Weasley and as a way to show this, wanted to do this for them.

Harry hoped they weren't going to return the gift, even had Spitfire, their goblin at Gringotts, to deny them gifting or returning the money back to them.

-------------------------

As soon as the floo flared, Harry was out of his seat and tumbling in the arms of his father. No matter how old he got, he promised himself he would never not miss his father.

"Hey," chuckled Harry's father as he wrapped his arms around his son.

"Hi," Harry said softly, his voice muffled by the clothing of Percy's jacket which Harry's head was buried in.

Percy retracted from the hug with a smile, his eyes dancing with happiness as he examined his son for any sort of injury or cause for concern.

"I wanted to thank you, again, for letting him stay here," Percy said as he drew away from his sons face and looked to Mrs. and Mr. Weasley.

"It was no problem at all, he is a sweetheart. You should be proud," Mrs.Weasley with a soft look in her eyes.

"I am very proud," Percy said with a giant smile as his son buried his head back in his coat from embarrassment. "Come on, Lou wanted to say hi to you before she goes off to have her own Christmas with Filch," said Percy as he ran his hand through his son's hair.

"Filch? Like the caretaker at Hogwarts?" Charlie asked curiously.

"The same, Lou apparently trapped his heart and isn't letting go of it. Apparently, his cat is far too adorable for her to let go. It seems he's fine with it," Percy explained with a small shrug.

"Huh," Charlie looked like his brain stopped working like he was trying to put together an image in his mind but just couldn't.

With a last few goodbyes, the Jackson Family left the Weasley's toward their own home to celebrate Christmas.

"Are we still having a party?" Harry asked curiously.

"Yeah, it's just named New Year Party instead of Christmas Party. Some families won't join us because they had other arrangements, but we still have a decent amount coming. Neville and his Gran for one along with Luna. Your other friends are joining. The Malfoys, Severus, and Remus. Dumbledore said he was taking the shift at Hogwarts this year with their Mediwizard.

-------------------------

With the guests arriving, Percy was mostly saying hellos and directing them toward the kitchen were the food was before letting them do what they wished.

Their tree was still up, but mostly enchanted to have everything stay on the tree should someone accidentally bump it. His mother was around with his little sister and Paul was handling the Grill outside for Hot Dog and Burgers. He was still waiting on Lou to deliver the fireworks he sent her to pick up, but they had time seeing as it wasn't even dark yet.

Boris was around somewhere with his pack, seeming to have pleasant conversation with most of them.

"Hey, Percy," greeted Remus Lupin as he exited the fire.

"Hello, Remus," Percy said with a smile.

After their first introduction and the following Full Moon, Percy got to know Remus just a bit better. Enough that they were on a first name basis with each other.

Ignoring the rest of the guests that would be coming through, Percy stuck by Remus' side and just talked with the man he assumed didn't know many people around.

He wouldn't want the man to feel alone, or at least that's what he told himself.

"I got you something," Percy said with a grin that was hiding his slight nervousness.

"Oh? I'm sorry, I didn't get you anything," Remus said with a frown.

"Don't worry about it. Harry had mentioned in a letter that you're teaching him the patronus charm, so I thought I would get you a book," Percy explained as he led the man to his office.

From there, he grabbed the book from behind his desk. Figuring the other man wouldn't get him a present, Percy didn't bother wrapping the gift. It would make it seem more like Percy saw it and just bought it without thinking, rather than the intense decision making Percy went through.

The book itself was originally one of Chiron's about Dementors and how the patronus works. It even gives a few ways of focusing a memory that would help solidify a patronus. Sometimes it wasn't just enough of a Happy Memory that cause the patronus to form, but rather how strong a will a person has in summoning the Spirit Guardian from the Underworld to bond with a wizard. It's why so many patronus' also matches a person's animagus form, because they have a bond with their animagus form since they were born.

Think of it along the lines of the Daemon from His Dark Material series. Only in this case, their bond is never shown and cannot be handled by other people. Their animagus form is essential the Daemon from the series.

Percy waited until Remus was looking through the book before gathering his courage. "So, I was wondering if you wanted to see a movie at some point this coming weekend?" Percy asked casually.

"Sure, what movie?" Remus asked distractedly. "Is anyone else going?"

Percy frowned and looked at Remus before his lips twitched. The man wasn't aware Percy was asking him out. Alright, he could work with that. "No, was there anyone you wanted to invite? My treat," questioned Percy.

"I don't think so, just pick the movie and I will try to be there. Aim more toward Saturday than Sunday please, I need to get classes ready for when the holidays are over," Remus explained as he finally looked away from the book and moved to shrink it and put it into his robe pocket.

"Alright, I'll let you know. Do you have a telephone?"

"Uh, yeah. Give me a sec," Remus awkwardly said as he riffled through his robes.

It was an old flip-phone but it seemed to work. Percy quickly put his number in before sending a text through it so he had Remus' number as well.

"Alright, Saturday sounds good," Percy said as he stifled a laugh. Oh, he so wanted to say it was a date, but Remus was still understanding that his wolf form wasn't a disease. The man had low self-esteem, he wouldn't talk about an actual date between them until he knew the man knew he was serious.

Hades, Percy didn't even know if he was serious yet. He supposes this would be the best time for a trial run.
