Chapter 4: Classes
I do not own the underlined passages, it's from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. That being said, I do not own Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Underlined - Quote from book
Harry thought that the first few days of getting use to the magical school was rather easy. After their initial first day at Hogwarts, the Perfects enlisted third years and seventh years to help the first years around.
Harry and Neville's mentors were Cedric Diggory and Nymphadora Tonks (who when insisted on being called Tonks, Harry called her Nymph and decided to face her wrath (though he just got amusement in return for his efforts)).
They helped the two get to their classes and avoid Peeves who was trying to stop their efforts of getting to class on time.
It also helped that Harry let Hogwarts guide him too. Sometimes, after dinner he would just walk aimlessly around and just connected with Hogwarts magic.
His friends always questioned his sanity whenever he would just be walking the halls with his eyes closed and let his hand glide against the wall, but he just gave them a smile and let the subject drop.
It was on his early morning walk that he first met the Caretaker Filch, but instead of earning the man's ire but saying something stupid or stuttering an excuse, Harry simply asked, "May I pet your cat?"
He watched as the Caretaker turned shocked and could only nod slowly and watch his cat (who was known to hate everyone but him) slowly melt under Harry's touch.
Mr. Filch watched his cat rub against Harry's legs and purred under his soft but amazing touch. Once he felt he pet enough, Harry stood back up and thanked the Caretaker for all the hard work he does.
The Harry let Hogwarts guide him back toward the hall where Madam Pomona gave him his schedule with a soft smile.
When he learned that he was going to take Astronomy, he had a giant smile the whole day and couldn't wait to learn about more stars. He was disappointed to learn though that he wouldn't have potions until Friday where it was doubled and with the Slytherin, which was fine by him.
Harry looked over his schedule and noticed that he had potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts with Slytherin while the rest of his subjects were with the Ravenclaws, other than flying which was with Gryffindor.
Harry was less excited about History of Magic, but after figuring out that he can smuggle two cups of coffee into the room, he was fine with paying attention and taking notes in his notebook from the actual textbooks.
Harry reserved judgement from his Charms professor who seemed just a bit too excited that he was finally at school (he did fall off his stack of books during roll call when he said his name).
But the subject Harry was most embarrassed about, was probably Transfiguration. How was he suppose to know his teacher was the cat that was sitting on the desk.
He just started to pet the orange cat that melted under his fingers until the bell rang where he finally took his seat and felt heat rush to his cheek as the cat turned into Professor McGonagall.
Harry did end up hitting his forehead into the desk which blushing with embarrassment, though the teacher was better at hiding it. He noticed the small blush she had which made him redden even more.
He was proud to admit that he was the first student to change their match into a needle perfectly.
He got it on his second try to the Professor's surprise, after that he started to help Neville and explained some of the concept behind the transfiguration and then attempt to help him (though it was harder because Neville didn't have a wand that was connected to him magically).
Defense was a bit of a joke, Harry was intent on talking to Draco about having his dad possibly helping with getting a good professor soon.
Harry did note that his Slytherin friends were surprised when he plopped himself at the Slytherin table one morning with a concerned Neville and amused Terry behind him.
No one dared to comment about the fact that the Boy-Who-Lived was at the Slytherin table, but the whispered sometimes weren't that quite (especially from that Red Head from the train).
Harry just ignored him and went about his day like normal, that was until Friday morning, where the Double Potions was going to take place.
Harry noted with surprised when his Slytherin friends slide next to him as he was leaving the halls fifteen minutes early to head to Potions.
But then he learned that his friends knew that Harry knew his way around Hogwarts and was going to follow him to learn the way.
Harry huffed an amused laugh, before trailing his hand against the walls and let Hogwarts magic wash over him so she could guide him where he needed to go.
"How do you do it, Harry?" Draco asked, happy that even if they were in different houses, they were still friends.
"Do what?" Harry asked as the magic danced on his finger tips from Hogwarts excitement.
"Know your way around? I don't think I have ever heard of a first year knowing how to go around Hogwarts without getting lost. I heard third years still get confused sometimes," Neville finished Draco's question.
"All I'm doing is listening," Harry explained as he closed his eyes and let his magic dance with Hogwarts.
"Listening to what?" Blaise asked this time.
Harry's face was one of relaxed as he replied, "Hogwarts is dancing underneath my touch, I let her guide me through these halls."
The others frowned and put their hands against the walls, but unlike Harry, they couldn't hear the Castles tune.
"I'm just marking that as a Boy-Who-Lived thing," Draco stated and with that, the discussion of Harry's ability to navigate the castle was not brought up again.
They arrived to the Potions room 10 minutes early, much to the confusion of a Potions Master who was reading something from a notebook.
"You are all...early," his voice was quiet but seemed to resonate around the room. Harry could feel his teacher's eyes on him, mostly looking confused and...was that amusement?
"Harry navigated us, Professor Snape," Draco answered as he sat next to Harry in the second to front row.
Neville and Blaise took up the seats behind them, and Daphne and Millicent (who tagged along but said nothing) sat to Draco and Harry's left with Crabbe and Goyle behind them.
The Potions Master hummed and stared at Harry who he could see what already chapter 9 into their next year textbook.
He was slightly startled, he expected a carbon copy of James Potter, but all he got was James Potter look-a-like (only with Lily's eyes) that acted like Lily.
After a few minutes passed, the potion professor excused himself and exited the room. He stayed out of the room as other students entered the room and took up a spot around the room.
The Slytherin were always kinder to the Hufflepuffs than any other house, because they meant to harm to any of the Slytherins. Ravenclaw tried to get knowledge out of the Slytherin and then there was the feud with the Gryffindors. They were happy to get two classes with the Puffs who would just try to be nice to them with no other motive.
As the time started for class, Harry finally looked up from his book when the doors threw open and their Potions Professor strolled into the room with his robes bellowing behind him.
Harry instantly set his book down and started to write everything the professor was saying. He started with name call and Harry was surprised to note that the Professor skipped his second last name, before shrugging and moving along.
"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potionmaking," he began. He spoke in barely more than a whisper, but they caught every word -- like Professor McGonagall, Snape had the gift of keeping a class silent without effort. "As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses.... I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death -- if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach." (- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Page 136 and 137)
When he was done writing done the speech, Harry looked up and made eye contact with the Professor whose left eyebrow twitched into something of a raised eyebrow before his face smoothed out.
"Mr.Jackson, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?" (- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Page 137)
While Draco also raised his hand, Harry recalled the information from the textbooks he's been reading over the summer.
"A Sleeping Potion so powerful it creates a Potion called Draught of the Living Dead because it sends the drinker into a deathlike slumber. Its effects are similar to suspended animation. This draught is an advanced potion, taught to sixth year students," Harry replied remembering the textbook he read about sixth year potion making.
Truth be told, he read all the year Potion books before summer was over (he liked potions okay!) and he was only going back now to write notes on all the things he read.
This time he really did receive an eyebrow from the Professor and his lips twitched into something of a smile before his face smoothed back. "10 points to Hufflepuff for the correct answer. Do you know the answer to this though, where would you look if I told you to find me a bezoar?"(- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Page 137)
Harry's mind raced through his Occlumency filing system that was starting to slowly develop before remembering the answer.
"Bezoars are a stonelike mass taken from the stomach of a goat, that acts as an antidote to most poisons, with Basilisk Venom being one notable of those exceptions. It's information can be found in Antidote to the Common Poisons." Harry replied recalling the book and the information.
Again, the professor looked pleased while the class was staring at Harry with awe.
"10 more points to Hufflepuff. Final question before we start brewing, what is the difference between monkshood and wolfsbane?"(- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Page 138)
"Nothing is different between the two. They are the same plant that also has the name Aconite. It's a plant found in wild places and while the leaves are very toxic, the roots can be used as a potion ingredient," Harry supplied feeling pleased with himself remembering all these answers.
"10 points to Hufflepuff. Well? Was anyone copying that down?" the professor snapped at the others and unknown to everyone in the room. He was looking at Harry with a pleased hint in his eyes, happy to be proven that the boy was nothing like his father, he just had his looks.
With that, the potion making started and Harry and Draco made the perfect potion (they almost messed up along the way with Draco almost not stirring the correct amount but Harry caught it in time).
He also helped Neville and Blaise from almost messing up too. He felt Hogwarts warning before it actually could happened and caught Neville's hand before he dropped the Quills into the cauldron that would've resulted in burns to both partners (much to a startled Professor who was about to scold at the boy for almost messing up his potion).
After that, Harry talked with Neville and decided that they could be partners while Blaise and Draco could be partners to make sure nothing bad happens again.
Once their potion was corrected, Neville and Blaise somehow managed an almost perfect potion, both Hufflepuff and Slytherin were rewarded 10 points each for having two perfect (even if one was slightly off) potions.
Which meant that Hufflepuff was currently in the lead for points with 40 points from just one class (not to mention the 20 Harry got from McGonagall for his perfect needle on his second try and then the 5 from Madam Pomona for knowing some of the plants in the greenhouse (Neville also got 10 for knowing all the plants that were planted)).
Honestly, between the two boys, they had a lot of the points that went into the point system.
"I can't believe Sev gave the Puffs 40 points! And that was just the first day! Think about how many they will rake up through the year!" Draco bemoaned much to the amusement of the group.
They were alone in an abandoned classroom that Harry managed to talk Finch into letting them use as long as they did nothing illegal.
The man reluctantly let them use the classroom as a sort of common room between the three houses and told them that they can redecorate it with the help if the House Elves.
Harry sat up from the beanbag that he had commissioned from somewhere. "Neville! We haven't decided a room color yet for our room!" Harry looked slightly surprised at the fact he forgot all about it.
"What about rooms?" Terry asked who was sitting in another beanbag with a book in his lap.
The others looked curious too, so Harry explained that the first years had their own rooms with bathrooms as long as they had a partner.
"That's unfair! I have to share a dorm with all the first year Slytherin boys!" Draco was pouting at the end and looked disgruntled.
Terry also looked like it too. "Same here, why do the Puffs get their own rooms?"
"It's probably because Hufflepuff get the least amount of students. Most student go into other houses so we don't get many people in our years. Honestly, I think we have the highest year with eight students. I don't know what the highest the puffs had in a year though," Neville explained to the disgruntled group before turning to Harry.
"I was thinking of maybe a blend of colors. Have the carpet a Brick Red, while the walls would be a soft Royal blue. However our bathroom can have a neutral yellow and silver and black tiles. That way we have all the house colors," Neville explained to Harry who was making notes in his notebook along the side.
"I like it," Harry agreed and started to draw a picture of what they wanted so their head of house has an easier time picturing what they wanted when she would change the colors in their room.
"Alright, I'll talk it with her when we head back," Harry told him as he marked the page with a sticky note before closing it.
"Have you guys heard about Gringotts Break In?" Draco asked as he was laying on the couch in their common room.
"Yeah, wonder what was attempted to be stolen," Daphne said as she and Millicent were braiding one another's hair.
"I doubt that rumor is true. Do you really think the Goblins would ever let the fact that someone broke into the bank be written in the news? That's bad for business, I think someone made that story up," Harry told them.
He knew that Goblins loved gold and anything that might make it so gold stop coming was bad, they would never let such a story leak.
The others were silent as they digested and agreed with Harry. With that, they paid no attention to the Daily Prophet thinking that they were spouting lies.
Harry finally sat up as he realized something. "You guy have your homework done right, tomorrow we're getting Neville's wand after lunch."
Neville looked shocked at the reminder as the others instantly pulled out their homework to work on together (other than Terry who finished his with Harry earlier that day).
When Harry got asked a question about something, he referred to a book they had and when they still couldn't figure it out, then he explained it to them.
It took a bit of time, but they finally got it done just before curfew. Quickly saying goodbye and running into Filch who was going to get them to warn them (he's come to notice that they don't always pay attention to the time and tries to warn the group who he actually kinda likes).
Harry bid them hello and a goodbye quickly as he and Neville took secret passages to go to the portrait outside the common room.
After saying hello to Helga and were let into the common room, Harry spotted a worried Cedric and an amused Nymph.
"There you are! It's almost curfew, where were you two," their mentor looked worried while Nymph's hair was slowly changing colors.
"We were in one of the abandoned classrooms with our friends," Harry explained as he looked around for Madam Pomona.
"Why were you there?" Nymph asked wondering why first years would want an abandoned classroom with their house friends.
"It's a great place to meet other house friends and hang out to work on homework and work in a quiet space," Harry told them as he spotted the Professor and started toward her with his notebook, leaving Neville with their mentors.
Cedric looked slightly worried. "Do you have the Professor's permission?" he asked hoping the first years didn't get in trouble.
"We have the permission from Madam Pomona, Professor McGonagall, and Mr. Filch the Caretaker," Neville confirmed even when the people surrounding him went quiet.
"How'd you get Filch's permission?" one fourth year asked in awe.
Neville blinked wondering why it was such a big thing. "Harry's friends with him and his cat, all he had to do was ask and make points on why they should be allowed to. Honestly, it was Professor McGonagall that was more hesitant, but after telling her we had Finch's permission she agreed almost instantly.
"That's because Finch agrees to nothing when it comes to children!" Nymph told the confused boy who had a look of understanding.
He blinked a few time before shrugging. "That's just something else I have to mark under the Boy-Who-Lived then. He has these quirks that we just write down whenever he does something unexpected," Neville explained.
Everyone quieted as Harry left toward the first year dorm with Madam Pomona behind him and Neville following them to make sure it's how both Harry and he visioned their room to look like.
After confirming it's to their liking, Harry and Neville made plans to go to one of the stores in Diagon tomorrow also to see about new enchanted bedding. Harry was hoping to get some with Pegasus on them, but if not. Then Quidditch wouldn't be so bad either. Neville just wanted one with plants on them.
Looking forward to going to Diagon with Professor Snape (much to the man's confusion on how he ever got picked to go with the small group) they decided that they wouldn't stress the man too much.
