Chapter 37: The Werewolf

I do not own Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban or the Percy Jackson series/characters.

Quotes from book

Mind Talking between Familiar/Bonded

"Are we going to Hogsmead?" Regina mentally asked as she stayed as a tattoo above his heart.

"Not this week," Harry said back to her as his mates started getting ready to leave for their first trip. He was the only one of his years that wasn't going but Harry didn't particularly mind.

He was just thankful that he was caught up on his homework. The only work he really had to do was for his Dueling Mastery with Professor Flitwick and his Healing Mastery with Pomfrey. And that was mostly practicing the spells that they had introduced his to last week.

Since the first day, it was now closer to Halloween and Percy had informed Harry that it seemed Snuffles had disappeared. While Harry was worried, he felt like the dog would eventually make his way home. And Percy would continue to look for the dog at shelters and around the forest.

He even had the pack look for the dog the first few weeks he disappeared on them, and made sure they had a picture of him just in case.

But with no friends and homework, and pretty much having already mastered the spells for his Mastery classes, Harry was bored.

He understood the threat of Sirius Black, but he was utterly bored and there was no one to really keep him company except his familiars. He would read, but he was waiting on a new shipment of books his father was going to send as he finished the Summer list ones and had already read through this years books.

Sighing, Harry sat up from his bed and started to walk the halls with Eclipse on his shoulders and Neptune and Uranus in his pocket hidden. Maybe if he grabbed Hedwig from the owlery they could make up a sort of game in the forest with Solar the Unicorn.

As he was walking along another corridor when a voice from inside one of the rooms said, "Harry?"

Harry doubled back to see who had spoken and met Professor Lupin, looking around his office door.

"What are you doing?" said Lupin. "Where are Draco and Neville?"

"Hogsmeade," said Harry, in a would-be casual voice. "Ah," said Lupin. He considered Harry for a moment. "Why don't you come in? I've just taken delivery of a grindylow for our next lesson."(- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Page 153)

Harry quickly perked up and followed the professor to his office that was right behind the man's teaching desk.

He followed Lupin into his office. In the corner stood a very large tank of water. A sickly green creature with sharp little horns had its face pressed against the glass, pulling faces and flexing its long, spindly fingers.

"It's a Water demon," said Lupin, surveying the grindylow thoughtfully. "We shouldn't have much difficulty with him, not after the kappas. The trick is to break his grip. You notice the abnormally long fingers? Strong, but very brittle." The grindylow bared its green teeth and then buried itself in a tangle of weeds in a corner.(- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Page 154)

Instead of following the Professor toward his desk, Harry crept toward the tank and gave the grindylow a small smile as he put his fingers above the water.

"I wouldn't do that!" The professor quickly said in worry and was about to pull Harry away from the water tank before freezing.

The grindylow had went back out of the tangle of weeds and was quickly nuzzling Harry's fingers. Harry, himself, had a smile dancing on his face as he quickly started to rub his fingers against the young grindylow's head.

"Huh," was all the professor said as he leaned back against his desk, a thoughtful look on his face as he took in the content faces on both human and water demon.

"I'm sorry, Professor, did you want something?" Harry asked as he pulled his fingers out of the water and watched the Grindylow make a small, sad sound before disappearing back into the foliage.

The Professor set about making two teas (after asking Harry if he would like one) before explaining to the young boy, "I wanted to thank you for telling me about the pack behind you house. Professor McGonagall and I had met with them and I think I would like to try and spend a Full Moon with them. We have already cleared it with Boris."

"It's fine, I think they'll be good for you," Harry said with a slight shrug.

"Yes, while I am a bit displeased about the lack of potion they take, I understand where they are coming from and will follow what they have asked of me. I'm...hesitant to not take the Werewolf potion, but I understand the ramifications of it much better now that it was fully explained to me," the professor said before straightening.

"There was another thing I wanted to ask you. I've heard from many of the professors that you are quite gifted in magic. Especially with teaching the younger DADA students, so in my thanks for also referring to the pack, I will offer to teach you a spell that will help with your Boggart problem?"

"Oh?" Harry asked intrigued with his professors offer. "What spell?"

"I'm not sure if you have read about it, but the spell is Expecto Patronum."

"The spell that creates a sort of spirit-guardian and repels Dementors?" Harry asked fulling focused on their conversation now.

Lupin seemed surprised by Harry's knowledge and Harry felt a small blush rise. "After the attack on the train, I started reading everything I could on Dementors and found a brief mention of the Patronus in one of the books. It was harder to find more books related on it, but I ordered a few more and got them about a week ago. I've been reading them pretty in depth and try and figure out if I could do it. I was going to ask Professor Flitwick about it later this week during one of our sessions but are you offering to teach me it?"

Harry's Professor had a smile. "I will if you want to learn it. We can schedule the meetings around your schedule, but I think most can be on the weekends. Reading will be a good start, but I want to get past this first Full Moon before we schedule something more concise."

"That sounds like a wonderful plan," Harry said with a grin and finished his tea before Luna peeked her head around the office door.

"Harry, I finished my homework. We can go play that game you wanted to try now, if you want?" she asked with a shy smile toward Professor Lupin.

Harry perked up and set the tea cup down before quickly giving thanks and goodbye to Lupin before racing after Luna. It seemed they were going to be doing that Magic game they thought up a week ago.

Because both were so attuned to their magic, Harry had an off comment about racing through the forest chasing Solar who would leave a magic trail. The first to actually find Solar (as opposed to another Unicorn with similar magic) that person is the winner. If they don't find Solar by dinner, than they all meet up by Hagrid's shed and go for dinner while Solar goes to her pack and recent mate.

It was during Dinner when the news about Sirius Black breaking into the Gryffindor Tower reached all ears.

BONUS: Professor McGonagall and Lupin visiting Percy and Boris

Percy had been expecting the visit last week (which was mostly spent trying to find Snuffles who had disappeared) and had informed Boris of the development as well.

It was still a surprise that when reading a to Kill a Mockingbird (a gift from Annabeth) with his Demigod Glasses (they translated the language read into Greek or Latin depending on user) when the floo flared.

Percy checked his watch which was connected to the ward stone and noted that it was Hogwarts which was asking if they could come through.

Setting his book and glasses down, Percy accepted and waited for whoever was going to come through.

The first Percy recognized as Deputy Headmistress McGonagall, the same person who escorted Harry and him the first time to Diagon Alley.

The other to step out what was roughly the same height as Percy, just above six feet and had light brown hair that seemed to have a few dusts of gray mixed in. The green eyes he had were different than either Percy or Harry's.

It reminded him to the grass almost, or at least, along those lines. Percy caught himself before he continued to check out the man in front of him as he stuck his hand out to him.

"Percy Jackson," Percy said with a smile.

The man blinked, seeming slightly surprised before giving a small smile in return. "Remus Lupin."

"Deputy Headmistress," Percy said with a small tilt of his head toward the lady who gave him an unimpressed stare as he eyes flicked toward his hand which was still shaking Remus'.

"Ah, right. Sorry, lost track of myself. You're here about the werewolf pack?" Percy asked as he strolled toward the kitchen where the backdoor also was.

The two following him instantly. "Yes, I have quite a few questions," Remus said as he watched Percy.

Instead of leading them straight out the door like both Professors assumed, he actually went toward a small cabinet just to the side of the fridge.

There, he opened it and spotted rows and rows of potions. Blinking in shock, Remus and McGonagall watched as Percy grabbed a row of potions from each shelf and seeming place them carefully in a box that was set out on the table.

"They're for the werewolves for after the Full Moon," Percy explained as he finished putting in the last of the potions in the box.

"What are they? Why might they need them?" Remus asked curiously.

"They're mostly pain potions. There are some balms for scratches and some blood replenishes. They're mostly used by the children that present as being a werewolf," Percy explained as he closed the box and started to lift it.

"I got it," Remus said quickly as he brought out his wand and lifted the box. "Handy. Thanks," Percy said with a grin before finally leading them toward the woods.

As the got to the edge, the two professor's noted a light of outside lights that seemed to be surrounding the forest.

When they actually got closer to the camp, the professor's noticed the same type of outside lights that seemed to surround the camp of tents and campfire.

"What's with the lights?" Professor McGonagall asked.

"Zey keep verrrevolfs in forrrest on full moon," a deep Russian voice said from Percy's side.

"Hello, Boris," Percy said with a smile.

"Hello, Perrrcy. Who arrre ourrr guests?" Boris asked

"This is Remus Lupin, the werewolf I had told you about, and this is the Deputy Headmistresses of Harry's school. Both are his professors."

"Ah, so you both have magic. You kan drrrop karrre package vith B, she vill put zem vith rrrest of stock," Boris said pointing to his Beta.

Percy smiled and left the two professor's with Boris as he grabbed the care package and made his way toward B, the bete of the group and a fierce female brunette that no one wanted on their bad side.

"How do the lights keep the werewolves in to forest and out of the camp?" Remus asked looking curious at the lights that were off.

"Lights arrre yellow and on Full Moon's have smell of bearrr piss. If smell and thrrreat of bearrr nearrrby doesn't keep volves in, zen zerrre is sharrrp sound zat gets rrreleased. Hurrrts like hell and keeps volfs frrrom going closer. Should zey still get past, Perrrcy gets alerrrted thrrrough varrrd stone in each korrrner of forrrest zat sends alerrrt to both vatches. Ve take prrrekautions frrrom zerrre," Boris explained, hoping they weren't tripping over his accent.

"But other than that, what other precaution is taken?" Remus asked curiously.

"Nothing. Vith big pack all konnected to me, I keep my mind durrring trrransforrrmation. Vith my mind in tack, I keep everrryone in line. Night is mostly spent hunting Deer, and sometimes handle hedgehog and snake population. Zerrre arrre also times ve vill play vith squirrrels too. Most of night is spent hunting, playing, and sleeping," explained Boris.

While McGonagall didn't seem overly pleased with the seeming lack of precautions, Remus nodded in understanding. It's what the Marauders use to do with him during the Full Moon. They watched him hunt small things that weren't any of their animagus forms, then often playing tag or fake fighting, and then sleeping. Remus knew that during the few hour transformation it was actually a lot of energy used.

"What should I bring if I do decide to come for the Full Moon?" Remus asked in interest. While it might not be perfect or maybe not even for him, he will say he was intrigued by their lifestyle. Especially as they seemed to lack the scars that werewolfs may get during the transformation,

"Niet potions beforrre. I know zerrre is potion forrr verrrevolfs but you arrre not to take it. It poison to ourrr kind in long rrrun. Volfsbane hurrrts volf which in turrrn hurrrts human body. It veakens immune system and vill kause yourrr volf to go morrre against you."

Remus felt awkward but after a glance toward McGonagall, he knew he wanted to try this. The kids that were playing what seemed like Futbol were having a blast and didn't seem to share the same lonely, isolated, scared childhood he had. He was curious and he did want to learn more. With his father being a famous werewolf hunter, no one really taught him what it was like to be a werewolf, he was scared of being one especially on the nights his father threw him in the basement and locked the door behind him for the change to occur. So, to see the lack of fear and seeming knowledge of the subject all around him, Remus knew it was probably time to really learn what it was like to be a werewolf than his father's biased behavior or the behavior based upon Greyback.

"Alright. I'll give it a try," Remus agreed.
