Chapter 14: The House Elf and Diagon

I do not own the underlined passages, it's from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. That being said, I do not own Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Underlined - Quotes from the book

Harry was trying to read the book on animagus he got last summer but his mind couldn't concentrate.

He was currently sitting in alcove in his room that had pillows and a small bookshelf above him that so far contained his current readings on them. But all his mind could think about was why he wasn't getting any mail from his friends over the whole summer.

It was weird, his friends got the letters he sent with Hedwig, and she could usually bring their letters back, but when they tried to send their own owls, he could never get letters back.

And that said, whenever Hedwig did return, she was fierce and aggravated, like something tried to take her but she would not allow it.

It was all so confusing, especially when he spots her trying to clean her ruffled feathers whenever she gets back, like something had grabbed her without her permission and tried to wrestle with her.

The only reason he knew all this was because his father was alright with Hedwig coming and going to her own liking, something that he knew the Dursley family would never had allowed.

He tried not to think about them often.

Sighing and pushing the book to the side, Harry stood up and started to head out of the house and to the barn, wondering if Spade would like a grooming.

As he did so, he noticed something along the house hedges, two enormous green eyes had appeared among the leaves. (-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Page 8)

Harry kept eye contact with the two eyes and tensed as he fingered his second wand. Which may or may not have been a birthday gift from his father and was from knockturn alley, meaning it wasn't registered with the Ministry and therefore he could do magic over the summer.

As he had to choose between wand types and cores, his wand was...rather different to say the least. The test to choose the wand types and cores was closing your eyes, and see where your magic leads you best.

His magic, which was already different than most, had chosen three wand types and cores. Which was rather annoying if Harry had to be honest, because that meant he was even more different than a normal wizard.

Being the Boy-Who-Lived was annoying enough, but being the Boy-Who-Lived-To-Have-A-Weird-Wand was just not catchy enough for his tastes.

He didn't even feel like explaining how he ended up having Ash, Elder, Holly wood for a wand with the core being Unicorn, Thestrals tail hair, and Phoenix core. It should literally be impossible and far to above his magic level for him to hand but as soon as it was finished, it seemed to just latch onto him and never want to leave him alone.

Half the time the judgmental thing was arguing with his Holly and Phoenix wand. Harry swears he's seen them try and destroy one another before. He foolishly tried to scold them and so far hasn't seen them fight again but he wasn't feeling confident.

But as soon as his wand was pointed at the two eyes, they seemed to disappear. Feeling worried and wondered why his dad wasn't here yet worried about something getting past the wards he had in place.

Biting his lip slightly in thought and unease that there seemed to be something stalking him, he made his way to the barn with his wand gripped in his hand.

Just as he was about to open the barn doors and slip inside the stables, when a little creature that had large, bat-like ears and bulging green eyes the size of tennis balls seemed to appear out of nowhere with a small pop-like noise.(-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Page 12)

The creature bowed so low that the end of its long, thin nose touched the grass. Harry noticed that it was wearing what looked like an old pillowcase, with rips for arm-and-leg-holes. (-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Page 12)

"Er — hello," said Harry nervously. (-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Page 12)

"Harry Potter!" said the creature in a high-pitched voice "So long has Dobby wanted to meet you, sir . . . Such an honor it is. . . ."   (-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Page 12)

Trying to recall what the creature could possibly be, Harry tried to play the situation off. "I believe it's my honor in talking to you, Dobby-" Harry started to say but was startled by a high pitch happy squeal from the little creature.

"Great Harry Potter knows Dobby's name! Dobby is very honored that Great Harry Potter knows Dobby's name!"

Harry cleared his throat slightly awkwardly and tried to put on a smile, even if it felt slightly fake, but in truth the little creature's happiness was slightly contagious.

"If you don't mind me asking, Dobby, but what type of species might you be? You see I'm still new to the wizardry world and I would love to put a face to the type of species you may be."

Dobby, the excitable creature he was, just gave another squeal and answered Harry's question, "Dobby is a House Elf Great Harry Potter!"

"Really?" Now Harry was really curious, he'd read all about House Elves and their history and briefly wondered if there were any on any of his properties. But that was another thought for another day. "Why have you come here today, Dobby? And how did you get past my dad's wards?" Harry asked as he dragged the House Elf toward the house and into the kitchen.

The happy House Elf seemed to pull into himself slightly as he pulled his ears downward, "Dobby has warning for Great Harry Potter. Harry Potter must not come to Hogwarts!" Dobby tried to warn.

Harry felt conflicted as he stared at the elf. "Dobby," Harry started softly as he knelt in front of the little elf, "wherever I go is technically dangerous, anyone can die any day. I want to ask you to allow me to go to Hogwarts, and be happy for as long as I can. Should danger arise, I will try to stop it, but I can't let anyone else get hurt. Does this make sense?" Harry asked softly and hoping he wasn't rambling.

Dobby was still pulling his ears and seemed to be about to berate himself and hit himself like the history books Harry read about before. Harry quickly took the House Elf's hands to keep them from harming himself.

Instead the Elf seemed to almost make his lip bleed from the biting he was doing before the small innocent creature carefully nodded and then a determined look crossed his face. "If Great Harry Potter goes to Hogwarts, then Dobby will also go to Hogwarts to protect Great-Master Harry Potter."

With a final, determined nod, the Elf disappeared with a faint pop and Harry was left staring at the ground.

"Right, mark slightly erratic House Elves onto the list of potential adopted creatures," Harry muttered to himself before making his way toward the barn to see Blackjack, Darling, Spade, and their newest foul who was a female and had yet to be named.

Just as he entered Harry noticed that Lunar was up in the rafters of the barn once more, in a nest that appeared the be made of little stones and pebbles that were around and seemed to be slightly melted into one another.

The actual rock nest was right above the new foal's nest and something that both Darling and Blackjack were hesitant about at first, until a snake (it was a harmless grass snake they overreacted) came into the foal's stable and Lunar quickly killed it with a soft blast of fire that extinguished itself before it could ignite the hay scattered around the place.

Harry also looked right next to the new foul to where Solar's stable was. It was new and different than the others because instead of just having a front stable door, it had a back that only Solar could use.

Percy had quickly discussed ground rules with the unicorn and it was established that so long as Solar had the freedom he desired, he was welcomed to come and go from the stables. Especially, on stormy and chilly nights, which was common in England.

Smiling as the still small dragon friend circled above him letting out a happy chirp, Harry let Lunar land on his shoulders while he made his way to Spade.

"What do you say about a fly around big guy?" Harry asked as he brushed his Pegasus' mane. That was, until he said the f-l-y word and the Pegasus started practically bouncing up and down excited to be in the air once more.

Harry rolled his eyes in amusement at his friend and quickly let Lunar down so she wasn't shaken at take off and quickly mounted Spade. Lunar following the two easily behind them as they set upon a race that was common over the summer.

---------------------------------

"Okay so tell me again what books you want?" Percy asked his son for what seems to be the fifth time when it was clearly the third.

Harry sighed in exasperation. "I already said, a book on dragons for one. I have a feeling Lunar is not a Norwegian Ridgeback like first assumed. I wanted to see if I could find an egg that's similar to that breed and what else she might be. She's suppose to be larger than the house, all I can see is that she set her own size and can adjust it however she wants."

"And what else did you want? Don't tell me nothing else we both know that would be a lie. Booknerd," Percy teased lightly and chuckled when his son just stuck his tongue out in retaliation.

Harry then held his head high and had an air of pompous around him. "I will have you know I take that with a great compliment and my dignity is full intake and ego has been stroked."

Percy couldn't take it anymore and burst into laughter, dragging his son into it right behind him. Father and son laughed for a good solid five minutes all the while ignoring the wizards and witches (and some muggles) giving them the few stink-eyes, amusement, or just straight out ignoring.

As they attempted to calm their racing hearts and the blood that had rushed to their cheeks as their grins showed the mirth that was shining in their eyes.

"Right, well you're not getting Lockhart's things. Those are trash and complete lying. I would know," Percy muttered as he checked over his son's list once more.

"Yes, yes, he fabricated the werewolf story. Heard it a million times already while you mutter about pompous, foolish, mind-tricking, golden-haired, arse who shouldn't even be an author with his trash writing. Did I forget any names for him?" Harry asked with a slight mocking version of his dad's voice.

"You forget self-centered fool with no dignity," Percy muttered as they finally entered Flourish and Blotts trying to get past the crowd. In doing so, missed the sign about Lockhart being in the building signing books.

"Of course, there's always one nickname I forgot," Harry muttered back with a slight pout and both parent and son froze as they realized just who was hogging the store was.

"Great, lovely, pompous di--hmm, bad word is here and is flaunting his illegal books. Lovely," Percy said loud enough for his son to hear, but not for the crowd in front of them that was gushing over Lockhart.

"Think we can leave before we get noticed?" Harry whispered to his father. But it was too late, the pompous bad word had spotted Harry.

Lockhart leapt to his feet and positively shouted, "It can't be Harry Potter?" (-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Page 60)

The crowd parted, whispering excitedly; Lockhart dived forward, seized Harry's arm, and pulled him to the front. (-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Page 60)

But the applause and whispering almost turned instantly to shock as Harry, not missing a beat, shouted, "Stranger Danger! Bubble pierced! Bubble pierced! Is this considered rape!"

And than a snort came from the crowd and almost instantly everyone was turning to an slightly amused but looking downright angry black haired male that was standing next to Harry before he got dragged away.

"Now that I have your attention," Percy started as the pathway in front of him parted, like he was the Sea of Monsters and they wanted nothing to do with him, "I would like to tell you unhand my son this instant."

Percy's voice rang throughout the silent crowd as Harry continued to try to get away from Lockhart, but the man had a surprisingly strong grip and seemed to shocked to do anything.

"Excuse you! Who do you think you are?! Talking to Lockhart like that!" A shrill voice asked in the crowd that no one could really identify. Other females were just as irritated with the male as the shrill voice.

Percy only raised an unamused eyebrow and gave a deadpan stare that screamed, how stupid can you be? "Would you care for an unknown male handling your child without your or their consent? Now I shall ask again, unhand my son."

"But he's not unknown! He's Gilderoy Lockhart," A dreamy sigh of a voice said throughout the crowd as most female gave dreamy stares at Lockhart who seemed like he was trying to recover this shock, all the while Daily Prophet paparazzi were taking pictures and notes like crazy.

"Who I have never met and don't know anything about. For all I know he's a serial rapist that likes small children that puts up a facade and memory wipes the real people who did the acts that he claims to have done," Percy said calmly and watched as the blood drained from Lockhart's face and how he almost instantly unhands Harry who scrambles to his father.

Lockhart, almost realizing what he had just done, threw on a wide, flattering smile even as his  face was still pale. "Now that's just silly, why would I, the Great Gilderoy Lockhart, ever need to memory wipe anyone?"

Percy smirked as he realized that Lockhart never denied stealing peoples work, and watched as the Daily Prophet people were whispering excitedly and taking notes as they themselves realized this as well.

"I'm sure what I said wasn't true. As that would be quite criminal of you, wouldn't want certain people knowing. Especially with my son so close by you now would we," Percy said and gave this shark grin as Lockhart seemed to get paler.

"Yes! Yes good sir, spreading those horrible rumors would be so unkind. Especially to the good people in this building! Such lies are bad for ones career you know. Especially with young proteges around."

"Then it's decided that those 'bad rumors' won't go around, especially with my son being in ever so contact with me. Now, if you don't mind we need to get our school books now," Percy said as he laid a hand on his son's shoulder ready to leave the annoying man.

"Oh! Hogwarts yes! Why doesn't he come up here and get a signed copy of, Magical Me. He and his schoolmates will, in fact, be getting the real magical me. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I have great pleasure and pride in announcing that this September, I will be taking up the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!"(Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Page 60)

Percy was ready to face-palm as the man was still trying to use his son slightly to get more famous. But then the news sunk in and his eyes narrowed on the man. "Yes, what great news, it would be a shame if you were just like the Last Defense teacher, with him disappearing and all. I do hope I don't get a bad letter about you from my son who I contact almost regularly. "

Lockhart, once again pale but not as noticed, had a fake smile on his face as his other one faltered at Percy's news. "No, no, no bad news from your son about me!"

"Excellent, now off we must go," Percy said as his son awkwardly fumbled with the book he was given from Lockhart and hesitantly accepted the picture from the Daily Prophet.

As soon as they were away from the crowd Harry determinedly said, "Never again. Never again will I be used in one of your paybacks. What do you want me to do with the book?" Harry asked as he personally felt like shoving it into the Sea of Monsters in hopes they get some sort of amusement. How dull must it be there without the laughter from Magical Me by Gilderoy Lockhart. That was before Harry shoved the books into his father's hands and started looking around for the books he wants.

Percy looked curiously at the book in his hands before spotting a Used-Book donations bin that had a few Gilderoy Lockhart books in it as it was. Shrugging, Percy was about to dumped the book into it before freezing.

Tilting his head in thought, Percy flipped the pages before finding the adventure he was looking for.

"Ah yes, the werewolf story, one of Lockharts favorites if I remember. What are you doing with it?" Tom Riddle asked over Percy's shoulder.

The younger of the two men (Percy that was) never even jumping. "That's for me to know and you to find out," he replied before tearing the story out, before dumping the book into the donations bin.

"I don't know if that's allowed." Tom commented as his brown eyes that both knew to be a glamour (Tom not knowing that Percy knew that was).

"It was either that or burn the damn thing. And burning it wouldn't be cruel enough for what it deserves."

"So giving a child a book without one story, that was also personally autographed is?" Tom asked while raising an unamused eyebrow.

"If anything I'm saving the child really," Percy pointed out as he started to walk away from the bin (ignoring how Lucius stepped to it and dropped a certain book it or that later the Weasley's grabbed books from the bin and a certain young Weasley grabbed what seemed like a diary from it).

"Hmm, sure you are." Tom dryly commented on. The two males then met up with Harry and brought the books needed before continuing shopping.

-------------------------------

Back with Harry during Tom and Percy's Conversation:

Harry had just escaped the crowd that was still surrounding by Lockhart before running into a certain professor that had first showed him the ally.

"My, what on earth are you in a rush Mr.Jackson-Potter?" Minerva McGonagall asked as she helped the young boy up, who seemed to have fallen during their small collision.

"Running away from the Lockhart club," Harry replied without much thought and then blushed as one of his favorite teachers started to laugh.

"Yes, I do believe Mr.Lockhart has a high fan club. I am pleased to see that your father and you aren't part of that club," the Professor said as she gave a small wink to the boy who blushed even further.

"Uh, you, uh, saw that?" Harry squeaked in embarrassment.

"I do believe that the news has already spread through Diagon." The Professor said with amusement shining in her eyes.

Before Harry could squeak something else out, Minerva McGonagall cut in. "That's beside the point, I am happy I have run into you. I wanted to go over something with you that would affect your school schedule should you chose to."

Harry looked intrigued almost instantly, embarrassment going away very soon after she talked. "And what would this something be?"

"I'm sure you're aware of the rumor about the curse on the Dark Arts position?"

"Yeah, isn't everyone?"

"That's beside the point, what the rumored curse says is that anyone higher as a professor will get the curse-"

"I still don't see how this concerns me?" Harry interrupted looking like a confused puppy.

Minerva gave Harry a stern look and watched the confused puppy turned to scolded puppy almost instantly, "Do let me finish Mr.Jackson-Potter. Now, I was going to say that because your scores were perfect, and I do mean perfect that one missed question doesn't count Mr.Jackson-Potter, I have talked it over with the Headmaster and we discussed you possibly doing and finishing a masters degree in Defense Against the Dark Arts over the next six more years of your schooling."

Harry looked dazed and confused. "But how would that work? I haven't even tried to do any of the higher spells, and I'm a second year as it is?"

"That's where a slightly change in your schedule is. You would be teaching the first years, while Lockhart would be teaching the rest. Each year you teach one more year. Next year would be the first and second years, your fourth year would be first, second, and third years and so on, and so on. You would be learning and grading all their work, similar to how your masters degree would be as it was. Only you would be the unpaid teacher and therefore-"

"Not part of the curse on the position! Brilliant!" Harry exclaimed before a horror look entered his eyes. "Does this mean I have to work with Lockhart?!" Harry asked with horror shining in his voice and eyes.

Minerva McGonagall just barely concealed a chuckle before shaking her head. "Thankfully no, he would sit in on the classes--but more than likely hang out in his office. Your first lesson I will sit on to make sure everyone knows that in that classroom and outside of it, to the years below you, you are essentially a teacher. You can take points away from the lower years and give them points in return. The Headmaster and I discussed this and if this privilege were to be abused then we will take it away. But we aren't expecting that to be done. Now, Mr.Jackson-Potter do you want to do this for the rest of your schooling?"

Harry thought long and hard about this weighing the pros and cons before asking one final question. "Am I still allowed to do self-study in the class?" he asked almost hesitantly.

Harry's Transfiguration teacher looked thoughtful. "Give it a week each year, if they are incompetent then you may do a self-study year in that subject. Am I to assume the same is being done for your history class as well?"

"Yes! I will also accept the Master Degree Protege whatever too,"

Minerva McGonagall has a smile dancing her lips as Harry's description of the Master and Protege relationship that the Mastery was about. "Then I shall edit your schedule accordingly. See you in school, Mr.Jackson-Potter." Harry's Professor bid goodbye before walking away. Just in time for Percy and Tom to round the corner.

"Finally! I couldn't find you forever. Do you have your books?" Percy asked as he acted like he was 14 and not the 25 year old he was.

"Um, yeah about that, I still need to find them. The crowds are sharks!"

"Hey! Sharks are friendly! These people, they aren't sharks. They're something much worse than that."

Almost instantly, father and son gave a shiver in horror and disgust as Tom watched the interaction amused.
