Chapter 10: The Mirror
I do not own the underlined passages, it's from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. That being said, I do not own Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Underlined - Quotes from the book
The students arrived a few days before the break ended and Harry was surprised to see a package on top of his bed.
It was slightly wide and didn't seem to be very large. When he looked at the note there was no name so he couldn't send a thank-you letter to them.
He looked inside to see a silvery material and noted that when he tried it on and looked in the mirror, he had disappeared.
He debated with himself for a bit, wondering if he should get it checked by a teacher before looking through his own books.
Finding the right spells, he casted them over the invisibility cloak and noted that there was no tampering or dangerous spells on it.
Feeling foolish for not having done it before he tried it on, he then casted the same spells on himself and let out a breath when there was nothing on him.
He closed his eyes and just felt the cloak for a bit, feeling the attachment it gave him to his father and maybe even his mother too if she ever used it.
He thought about what he was going to do with it, and the Jackson in him decided that it wouldn't hurt to explore after curfew just a bit before classes started.
So that night, after explaining to Neville what he had in mind (Neville being Neville was worried and asked Harry to at least arrive before 2 AM, if he wasn't he would get their Head of House just in case).
Harry then slipped out of the room and started to explore the castle, making sure to stay away from Finch from Hogwarts insistence. Because no matter what, the man did have a job to do which meant catching any students after curfew.
With the guide of Hogwarts, Harry explored the castle slowly. Though, he paused at one door and felt Hogwarts uncertainty.
Making up his mind before she could direct him somewhere else, he entered the room and only spotted a mirror right in the center.
Hesitantly, he casted the spells he used on his cloak and for checking himself and found that there was a slight compulsion charm and many spells that were still being developed but weren't complete.
Nodding slightly and trying to be careful of the compulsion spell, Harry looked above the mirror at the inscription at the top.
Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi (-Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Page 207)
Harry carefully thought the inscription over and found that if you read it from right to left it made much more sense, like a mirror, the inscription actually said: I show not your face but your heart's desire.
Carefully, with the message in his head and knowing he won't actually see anything real. Harry looked at the mirror and felt his heart spike and felt sadden.
"Of course," he whispered softly to himself. His eyes were sadden but shown with love as he saw his dad, and next to him were his birth parents. All were smiling and waving at him as he stood next to them with Helen and himself in front.
All their Pegasus were behind them seeming playfully mess with his father and dad's hair before taking off in some sort of game.
Letting out a loose breath. He closed his eyes and ingrained the image inside his head while his hand rested against the mirror.
"I show not your face but your hearts desire," he muttered to himself before watching the mirror slowly become his reflection.
"I will always love you, and you will always be in my heart. But I know it cannot be, goodbye mom, dad. Till we met again in the afterlife," Harry whispered to the mirror before shaking off the feeling of wanting to stare into the mirror again.
To make sure he didn't allow the compulsion to take over, he finally turned away from the mirror and grabbed the invisibility cloak off the ground where it must have slipped from his hands.
As he went to the door, he turned back to the mirror and shook his head sadly before slipping the cloak over his head and let Hogwarts direct him somewhere else.
He never saw the old pair of blue eyes that stared after him with sadness but pride shining brightly in them.
With that, the days went by and classes started back up. Harry partnering with either Neville or Draco in most classes, other than sometimes partnering with Padma Parvati (or Terry) who were the least obnoxious Ravenclaws so far.
With the weeks going by, Harry attending the Gryffindor vs Slytherin match and was surprised to note that Snape was being the referee.
That was, until he found out that Madam Hooch was otherwise busy. Though, he did wonder why he was still being the referee, he didn't seem like the type to really like being in the air where a lot of things could go wrong.
"10 Galleon says Slytherin win," Neville whispered to Harry before Harry snorted and shook his head.
"With the second year Seeker on Gryffindors team. Nah, I'm not taking that bet mate. They should hope that someone better at the job will be able to play next year. A first year would be better than the mate they have. Though 10 Galleons say Slytherin win by over 150 more points."
"10 Galleons say they win with less than 150 points then. We have a deal," Neville said as the two boys shook hands.
"What are you two doing?" Draco asked with narrowed eyes.
"Better on how much Slytherin is going to cream Gryffindor. I say more than 150, Neville says less than 150."
"Please, I say dead on 150 points. While Gryffindor have a horrible seeker, they make up for it with their Keeper, Chasers, and Beaters. How much we betting?" Draco asked.
"10 Galleons," Neville replied as Draco nodded.
"It's a bet then," Draco replied as they watched the game intensely.
The match was intense and lasted for roughly three hours before Harry shouted and danced in his spot while grinning like a fool.
"Pay up mongrels," Harry told them as he held out my hand.
Draco angrily mumbled about losing by only a few points while Neville just sighed and handed Harry his 10 Galleons. 20 Galleons richer, all three boys went back inside and followed Draco to Slytherin's portrait.
It was common knowledge to spot either Neville or Harry in the Slytherin's common room much to the amusement and ire of the older years.
But they were polite and never told the password to anyone else (it was Ostium which was Latin for entrance and changed every Friday to some sort of latin word).
So, Harry and Neville spent the evening with the Slytherin who were partying (though they stayed away from the Fire Whiskey, which Professor Snape was currently watching over) and had some of the Butterbeer which was there from some third years and higher who snagged it from Hogsmeade.
They left five minutes before curfew and were escorted by a Head Girl just to be safe. They made their way back safely and quickly fell asleep with the purr of Eclipse luring them asleep (with the occasional croak from Trevor in his new tank that had water in it--which was actually why he kept escaping Neville).
It was the next day that Harry got bombarded by his friends. He was in the library during his free period reading his book on Metamorphmagus (he was slowly learning especially with the occasional help from his cousin Nymph).
Draco, Terry, Blaise, Neville, and Theo had rushed up to him explaining that they found out about Nicholas Flamel and his alchemy stone.
"You just now found out," Harry asked perplexed. He didn't think it would take them that long to figure it out. But he was now worried what they were going to do with that information.
They all paused and looked at Harry with different emotions. Some were annoyance, some betrayed, Blaise even had the look of amusement like he shared Harry's sentiment.
"I tried to tell them earlier, but they didn't want to listen," Blaise said solemnly as he took the seat next to Harry and pulled out a Potions book.
"You...and you...what," Draco asked looking so disappointed. "Why didn't you tell us, Harry?" he asked confused.
"Would you have listened? I take not after what Blaise has said. And how would you ever learn these things in life if you do not research and find facts on your own. You cannot live your live off of someone else's knowledge," I told him before answering one of Blaise's question about an ingredient.
I ignored the pouting Draco and turned to Neville, "Please explain to Blaise better. I'm afraid I know the knowledge but cannot put it into words that he would understand."
Neville just shook his head before taking the seat next to Blaise, and started whispering with the other boy.
Draco just let out a defeated sigh before plopping himself in front of Harry with Theo right next to him. "I hate you sometimes," he muttered while crossing his arms.
"I love you two Draco-Dear, now stop pouting or I tell your mother. You know how she gets when you are slouching and pouting," Harry lightly scolded and watched Draco straighten his shoulders instantly.
After rolling his eyes at the other boy, Draco and Theo took up a talk about Transfiguration quietly as Theo was the better at the subject.
Harry quietly regarded that all his friends had a subject they were best in. Harry, himself, was the best at Astronomy, Draco in Potions, Neville in Herbology, Theo in Transfiguration, Daphne in Charms, Terry in History of Magic (self-taught) and then Blaise with Defense Against the Dark Arts (self-taught). He wondered how everyone would do during third year with the other classes they would be able to take.
Harry already had a general idea of what he wanted to take. He found that the max he could take was three without needed to have two subjects at the same time (he found a book all about that in the library but didn't say how it would work) and that on certain days of the week be the apprentice with Flitwick and be a sort of assistant teacher to the first years.
Shaking his head and clearing those thoughts, Harry listened as Neville mentioned that Hagrid wanted to show them something tomorrow.
"Am I invited? I find myself a bit bored with all my homework complete and would like to meet Hagrid," I asked Neville.
"He'd love to met him, and you'll love him. He's an animal lover you see, I'm sure you two will get along great," Neville enthused.
Giving Neville a smile, Harry stood up and his friends and he made their way to dinner.
When they knocked on the door of the gamekeeper's hut the next day, everyone but Harry (who's never been there before) were surprised to see that all the curtains were closed. Hagridcalled "Who is it?" before he let them in, and then shut the doorquickly behind them. (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 231)
It was stifling hot inside. Even though it was such a warm day, therewas a blazing fire in the grate. Hagrid made them tea and offered themstoat sandwiches, which they refused. (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 231)
"Hagrid, this is my friend Harry," Neville introduced and Harry gave a gentle smile and shook hands with the giant.
"Blimey, yeh've grown since I las' saw yeh. A bab' yeh were."
Harry took a second to understand Hagrid and his dialect before giving the half-giant a smile, "Well, it's nice to meet you, Hagrid."
After that, Harry let the others talk to Hagrid and try to weasel more information about the stone and Fluffy out of him. Harry just shook his head and started to pet Fang who was slowly melting under his petting. All but shoving his head in Harry's hands.
"Hagrid, can we have a window open? I'm boiling." Harry asked interrupting the others interrogation. (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 232)
"Can't, Harry, sorry," said Hagrid. (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 232)
Harry noticed him glance at thefire. Harry looked at it, too. (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 233)
"Hagrid -- what's that?"But he already knew what it was. In the very heart of the fire, underneath the kettle, was a huge, black egg. (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 233)
"Ah," said Hagrid, fiddling nervously with his beard, "That's er..." (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 233)
"Where did you get it, Hagrid?" asked Draco, crouching over the fire to geta closer look at the egg. "It must've cost you a fortune." (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 233)
"Won it," said Hagrid. "Las' night. I was down in the village havin' afew drinks an' got into a game o' cards with a stranger. Think he wasquite glad ter get rid of it, ter be honest." (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 233)
"But what are you going to do with it when it's hatched?" asked Blaise.(Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 233)
"Well, I've bin doin' some readin' , said Hagrid, pulling a large bookfrom under his pillow. "Got this outta the library -- Dragon Breedingfor Pleasure and Profit -- it's a bit outta date, o' course, but it'sall in here. Keep the egg in the fire, 'cause their mothers breathe on Iem, see, an' when it hatches, feed it on a bucket o' brandy mixed withchicken blood every half hour. An' see here -- how ter recognizediff'rent eggs -- what I got there's a Norwegian Ridgeback. They'rerare, them." (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 233)
Draco flinched away from the egg and quickly moved to whisper in Harry's ear. "Something's wrong, there is no way someone would just hand over the egg. They are way too expensive and I remember dad talking over the summer about some of the wizards in Romania were talking about a missing Norwegian Ridgeback egg. They were confused and upset because they only mate a few times in their lifetime."
Harry felt his lips thin. His mind raced with possibilities, "Hagrid, aren't you concerned about the fact that you live in a wooden hut while trying to raise a dragon? I see many faults in this plan of yours," Harry tried convincing Hagrid raising a dragon would be a bad idea.
But all Hagrid did was wave off Harry's concern. So with his mind racing with what someone gained from giving Hagrid a dragon egg (which he heard from the others Hagrid had really wanted for most of his life).
So, as Harry finished his homework and classwork before his friends (even as the amount rose), he tried to compiled a list of what someone may gain from the interaction with a, more-than-likely, drunk Hagrid.
That's when he realized that it might have to do with Fluffy. Feeling paranoid and scared for his new friend, Harry took one of the free-times he had and went down to see Fluffy.
Who all but jumped on Harry when he entered the door, long since recognizing his playmates scent.
"Hey, boy," Harry whispered to the three-headed dog who was almost drooling on the boy.
"I need you to pay attention," Harry said seriously and watched as the transition happened in the dog almost instantly.
Because unlike normal dogs, Cerberus' had a large intelligence. They had one even higher than a dolphin even though they rarely acted like it.
The dog sat in front of the boy and all six ears were raised and alert as the dog stared attentively at the eleven year old.
"I'm sure Hagrid, your owner, has some way of commanding you to not be harmful. But no matter, no matter what, ignore those instincts. Something bad is coming. The only time for you to stand down is when I say the word Amica. It means friend, okay boy?" Harry asked the giant dog who slowly relaxed and one of the heads licked the boys hand.
"Glad we're of agreement. Now, you don't happen to know about a red ball that I might just have do you?" Harry grinned playfully and watched as the dogs tailed started to move back and forth really fast.
Grinning, Harry pulled out a small red ball behind his back and as soon as he made it back to it's original gigantic yoga ball size, the dogs seized it from his hands.
Few days later, Draco whispered to Harry that the egg was hatching and while his friends went to class under Terry's insistence, Harry didn't and instead just gave a note to Neville to hand to the teachers about studying on his own for the day with the past-night's homework.
The teachers, use to Harry sometimes taking a day off to study on his own didn't give it much grief (as they found that he knew quite a bit more than his year mates they let him with a small quiz on his return to make sure he did know the material they covered).
So while Harry was able to watch the egg slowly crack and the dragon slowly hatch, the others almost missed the hatching.
But made it just in time that a few minutes after they returned, a small black dragon that was slightly covered in slime came out of the egg.
Harry watched as the dragon sneezed, spitting out some of the slime and a little bit of flames, before carefully reaching out to pet the dragon.
He half expected the dragon to bite his fingers, but Harry has handled a lot of baby animals from the aquarium and knew that his movements should be slow and he should let the baby sniff him before anything else.
So, with the dragon giving him a slight sniff, he watched surprised as the dragon practically started purring and rubbed his head against Harry's finger as if it was catnip.
Surprised, Harry looked into his magical core and was surprised that it was also purring. Wondering why but knew better than actually asking, Harry slowly picked the dragon up and let Hagrid see the baby better.
Hagrid, for all his animal knowledge, apparently didn't know the trick about letting the baby animal sniff you because he reached out far to fast and the dragon nipped at the man. Showing dangerously sharp fangs that Harry figured would be hell when came teething.
"Bless him, look, he knows his mommy!" said Hagrid (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone page 235)
Harry didn't think that was what the nip was about.
For the rest of the night, Harry watched as his friends slowly left the hut with the excuse (though very valid) that they had homework to complete.
"I should be going as well, Hagrid," Harry told the giant as he set the dragon onto the table. He held the baby in his hands the entire time as both his magic and the dragon were content.
But as Harry started toward the door, the chirps from the baby dragon made him pause. Harry turned and watched as the dragon fumbled his way toward the edge of the table.
Before he or Hagrid could stop the little dragon, he had already tumbled off the table. But to Harry's surprise, the dragon's wings snapped out and the little guy was flying unsteadily toward Harry.
Harry caught the little baby before it could slam into his chest. "Uh, Hagrid. I don't think he will let me leave," Harry said uncertainly.
"Nonsense," Hagrid said but Harry could tell that there was slight worry in his eyes.
As Hagrid reached over to grab the dragon from Harry's arm, the dragon snapped and blew a small fireball at Hagrid.
Hagrid hurriedly patted out the small fire that lite on his robes looking a little lost then certain. "Well, it seems the little guy has picked yeh. Congrats, Harry, yeh take care of 'im, yeh hear me?
"What?" Harry asked perplexed as he stared at the little dragon snuggled in his hand.
Hagrid just gave a teary grin and said something along the lines of 'they grow up so fast' before ushering Harry out the door.
Harry stood outside Hagrid's door for a few seconds before looking at the dragon snuggled in his arms before carefully placing him in one of his robe pockets.
Clearly he had research to do.
And maybe a letter to send to his father. He felt a bit sure they could take care of the dragon that seemed to be really attached to him.
If his dad could take care of a hellhound, Harry was sure he could take care of a dragon. That was much larger and wilder than a hellhound.
Right, research was definitely in order.
