:: 6 :: The sorting Hat
By an hour into nightfall, the train came to a stop, older kids trickled off and started towards where they would need to go to get to the castle. While all the first years went off towards a giant male, waving a lantern all the while calling for all the first years.
"Alright you two, go on with the other first years. Harry I will see you at the school okay?" Percy spoke as he ruffled Harry's hair affectionately.
Harry frowned and fixed his hair the best he could. "Okay..." he mumbled, feeling as if he was about to start running at any second. His nerves alit with the anxiety of being alone with people he didn't know.
Percy had to leave with the older kids, per the letter he was given, and when he did leave. Harry became quieter like in Madam Malkins. Draco took it in stride as he to was quiet do to the fact he was also nervous-yet also excited to see Hogwarts. Draco decided it was best to stay quiet as well for Harry-and just stick to the boys side as a way to help him without letting on that he was.
Harry appreciate Draco in that moment as he let him take a moment to himself to get rid of whatever jitters he may have-and to keep the excitement of a magical school in mind.
They followed the amassed crowd of children and the giant who led them all with a lantern. All the way to a beautiful lake.
Harry would admit that he instantly wanted to get into the water-he knew his father would as soon as he could, he wondered then if his Dad could see it from wherever he had to go from?
Draco led Harry over to a boat and had them hop in after the instruction from the lantern wielding giant. "Come on Harry," he spoke quietly as he stepped carefully into the boat. "I'm not a fan of boats." He frowned as it shook with Harry entering it.
"Why is that?" Harry asked with a frown.
"I don't particularly know how to swim." Draco admitted as he looked at the water that darkened as the day turned into night.
Grinning Harry snorted, "Then you have me to help you if something were to happen-I know how to swim quite well." He grinned at Draco tooth fully.
Somehow Draco felt relieved but also irate at the snort Harry had pulled-before he could ask about it two others had joined them in the boat. As it was told 4 to a boat-one was a girl with golden silk like hair and soft brown eyes, she sat down gracefully, as another boy with dark skin of rich caramel sat just as poised a nod going towards Draco-as the two knew one another if not briefly from childhood. Draco only barely knew the girl.
"Hello, I'm Daphne Amora Greengrass." She offered a hand in introduction towards Harry.
Harry shook her hand gently-noting he was much paler then the beautiful girl. "Hardleear Jackson-Potter." He spoke gently as he observed how the three in the boat seemed to have already been acquainted somehow. "But you can call me Harry."
She seemed surprised as she stared at him wide eyed-glancing towards Draco who rose only a silvery blonde eyebrow. "Well it's nice to meet you then Harry." She said after clearing her throat.
Then they all looked towards the last one to occupy their boat.
The boy seemed to sigh to himself before plastering a small smile on his face. "Blaise Leon Zabini." He said a bit stiffly.
Harry could tell he wasn't much of a talker-at least not right now as he seemed as nervous as most the others, even if he was good at hiding it Harry could just tell. "Nice to meet you Blaise, you as well Daphne." He spoke softly.
Then before much else could be said they all jumped a little after being distracted they didn't hear that everyone had gotten in and that they were now on their way-so their boat had started moving all on its own across the top of the lakes gently lapping water.
As they started across the water at the slow pace, Draco and Daphne started to talk about the houses of Hogwarts to themselves. Trying to guess exactly how they would know how they would be sorted. Which houses they wanted and which ones they didn't want starting from the one they didn't want the most-both had agreed they didn't want Gryffindor.
Harry felt like he was being suffocated. As much as he loved his father, homeschooling didn't make him ready for this world. He felt like he was being thrown into the deep end of a pool. He wondered why his dad didn't tell him earlier, before he got his letter. But he shook his head and looked down at the dark water they rode on. His dad did his best to get him used to socializing-but with his previous years of schooling then he had unbidden fears it would all be the same-and no he felt like it would be the same as before-when he had lived with the Dursleys.
"You okay Harry?" Daphne asks as she looks at him, noticing his frown growing deeper on his face.
Blinking he looked up before shrugging at her. "I'm fine. What are the houses again?" He said changing subject quickly as his arms wrapped his robes closer to him and his hands crumbled the soft fabric.
Raising an eyebrow she only let it go, for now. She guessed he may need the distraction as much as he was wanting them to not notice his growing nerves. "The houses are what makes Hogwarts, Hogwarts I suppose, it was made by four founders. Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, Godrick Gryfindor and last but most importantly, Salazar Slytherin. They were the teachers that started the school. And it's one of the best in Scotland, and Europe. Would be the top-if Dumbldore wasn't taking away many of the much more important classes but, that's a subject for another time." Daphne waved her hand, and Harry seemed to be really interested into what she had to say as his mind clinged to something other then past memories.
"The houses each represent them, and their personalities.Ravenclaw is for the witted and studious, they're usually really smart-in one way or another, not anything extremely specific. Logic and they use that a lot, very rational people. Unlike Griffindor, they're brave and courageous but they always get into some dumb lucked trouble-don't get me wrong, I'm sure my Uncle Delpheus would be Griffindor and he's my favorite Uncle. Griffin's just run in without thinking most times from what I hear. Slytherin-cunning and ambitious. They tend to keep to themselves, they observe situations they can use to their advantage to get what they want. A lot of people take that all who go into Slytherin are bad for the Dark Lord came from Slytherin supposedly. But really they're just more to their selves and sly. Plus it's a more prestigious house considering most that go there are from pure blooded families. We might all be in it, depends on the hat. Slytherin are really hard to describe when it's actually very versatile." She spoke listing what she could of her favorite house from what she could remember.
"That's the house I want to be in." Draco smirked as he turned to Harry beside him. "I like to think I am very cunning." He sniffed as he turned his nose towards the sky in a haughty act.
Smiling a little, Harry turned to him as well. "Hmm, you seem more Griffindor." He started to tease his smirk turning towards a devious grin.
"Take that back!" Draco says affronted as he stared at Harry with a slacked jaw.
"Speaking of Slytherin and Griffindor, they're both very competitive, especially against each other. The houses are absolutely always bullying the other. It's how it's been since forever, as Godric and Salazar weren't best friends in anyway." Daphne pointed out as she smiled at Draco's outburst noticing faster then the Malfoy that Harry had been taunting him.
"What about Hufflepuff?" Blaise asks, monotonously as he looked to Daphne, he knew of the houses-but she seemed to know a bit more.
Blinking, she tried to keep a flush of red from escaping onto her cheeks from his deep stare. Shaking her head she smiled at him as she continued her house talk. "Hufflepuff is one of the best houses, though I'm not sure I'd get into it. They only get one or two students a year sometimes I heard, or just a good handful depending on how big the year is, but a lot have come recently so who knows? But usually, they would either fit all houses or fit none at all, they are usually the most loyal and friendliest types. They'll protect the ones they hold dear with their life. My mother told me to make sure I make friends with them-they don't bully Slytherins-they usually are the ones to stop it. She says to make sure they don't kill or maim the bully though as well."
"Sounds like my Dad." Harry laughs, feeling better, he hoped he got into Slytherin or Hufflepuff. He wasn't much of a studier and he was also more sly then run into a situation due to his past and from what his Dad had taught him.
They then turned with the boat and saw the first glimpse of Hogwarts, their eyes widened as they looked at the tall stone castle and its many towers in awe. The lights in the windows as the night surround it made it look that much better. It's many towers and turrets made a stark shape above them as they got closer.
Harry now understood the importance of the boats.
_______
Percy had followed most of the older kids towards carriages pulled by these skeletal horses who whinnied and made soft noises as they pawed at the ground. He found himself at one that currently had no one else at it.
"Hello there." He spoke softly as he walked up carefully to the creature he had never seen before. When the creatures turned they whined again as they came closer.
Feeling the aura around them Percy knew the creature was a mix of Poseidon and Hades. His hand reached up to the head of the first one when he felt he was good enough to approach. The skin was soft-unlike the rubber he thought he would feel. Silky instead was what he could describe it as. A deep sadness welled within in him as his magic took in the magical trace of the creatures in front of him. Knowledge from it came to him.
Thestrals-creatures that those who have seen death can see.
After petting both for a moment Percy found himself giving each a quick kiss to their foreheads before heading into the carriage itself to get taken to the castle. As soon as he was inside three others rushed in while laughing.
Percy raised an eyebrow as they suddenly went quiet from seeing him. "Weasleys, new person. Hello." He spoke smirking.
"Well hello there Professor." The twins spoke with a grin as the carriage started its trek to the castle. They now would not be able to leave until they arrived at the castle as well.
The third with them was a boy, he had a lighter shade of dark skin that looked like milk chocolate, a deer headlight look with brown eyes and curly hair atop his head. A scarf of red and gold wrapped around his neck.
"Just what were you three doing just a moment before?" Percy questioned his eyes alight with curiosity. Nothing else.
The twins seeing this quickly spoke about the epic-in their words-prank they had pulled off, a first for their 3rd year with the help of Lee Jordan who was the third that had entered the carriage. On who the victims were and why.
Percy has smirked as he listened to the story. The boy who had been shocked and fearful of a professor finding out that they had made someone's robes from a boys robe to a girls uniform wouldn't do anything but tell them advice for the next time.
When Percy arrived with the older kids, he looked like a lost lamb amongst the children walking off with a destination in mind. The twins and Lee had run off as soon as they had arrived before he could ask them a thing of the Professor he was supposed to meet. He nearly blended with the older years with how young he looked but he had no robe-only the muggle clothes he had put on that morning. He was in dark blue jeans and a blue flannel with the sleeves pulled to his elbows as well as over a black tshirt, a hoodie over one arm covering his praetor tattoo. He stuck out like a sore thumb.
He watched a woman in dark green robes and a pointy hat walk briskly towards him and he couldn't help but the think of the lady fates. With her scowling thin face. Shaking his thoughts he met her as she walked over. "Hello, Mr. Jackson I presume?" She spoke in a thick Scottish accent. Her spectacles low on her nose. She looked the epitome of a Teacher. Pristine and elegant.
Smiling nervously Percy Nods. "Yes, that would be me. Nice to meet you...?"
"Minerva Mcgonagal. You may call me Minerva if you wish. Now come come, I need to get you seated before the first years attend-are you alright with being sorted? Dumbldore would like to have you sorted as a fun little introduction. You don't have to do it if you don't wish too." She spoke as she led him to the big table at the very end of the big hall that Percy was watching in slight interest. The candles to him were the best part-besides the spelled ceiling showing the sky having darkened considerably since the train had arrived.
"I won't mind. I think it would be fun as well." He gave his answer with a smile, he had wondered about the sorting. Was it's own thing like camp? Where they just had to wait till something appeared I've r their heads? But considering they're sorted at the beginning of the start of their school years, then he supposed it was something else. He wondered if this something could be copied for camp when any new Demi god came-it would make claiming a lot easier.
Snapping fronts his thoughts, His eyes roamed to the table, seeing three empty seats, straight in the middle sat who he guessed was Dumbledore himself, he smiled at the doting like grandfather-but his instincts said otherwise-he trusted them more then the old mans smile. And from what they learned from Gringotts and Harry's test-he would be keeping an eye on the older wizard.
There was a older lady in white robes, and another younger but shorter woman who looked like she just couldn't wait to get back to her plants considering her dirt covered hands, and hat of plants. There was a thin man with a turban, a half goblin and a man that his eyes stayed on for a little longer.
He was toward the end of the long table, he was quiet and frowning as his own eye stared out boredly I've the schools children with disinterest and a hate. Percy wondered why he was a teacher if he looked like he hated his job. But he was more focused on the fact that the man was eerily known to Percy. As if Percy had known this man before somehow-very confusing as he would remember the oldest face from somewhere if he did. The man was pale-very pale. Almost like his Harry's-if not the same. His eyes were a dark almost black and somehow he thinks he would get lost in them if he stared to long. Searching for something he somehow knew the man would hide. His hair was greased and long and his nose was hooked slightly as if it had been broken once.
"You'll be sitting between Quirell and Snape." Minerva said as she pointed between the male teachers towards the end, breaking him from his thoughts once again as he turned to her.
"Thank you." Percy said as he tried to not look over-the supposed birth mother of his son. No wonder the pale skin had been compared to Harry-he was Harry's technical mother. He did take another glance as he walked over to sit between the nervous man and the much more stoically staring one.
Percy smiled at Quirell in a nice manner, but the man only looked away with a nervous laugh. His turban wrapped neatly from behind as well Percy noticed, he had never seen something wrapped so well. He supposed experience was what granted him such things-or maybe magic
Kids continue to pool in for a couple minutes before he finally turned to the dark robed man beside him, noticing he was larger then himself in height and in broader shoulders, while Percy himself was more swimmer built. "Snape? Is that a last name or first name?" He started to question.
The old bat turned-he wasn't really old-actually he looked pretty young. His scowl just made him look older then he was, and His hooked nose was just part of his aesthetic. Percy thought he was an 8 in his book, maybe a 10 if he was glowering at him. The man raised a brow. "No," he purred in a deep drawling voice. "Severus is my first name."
Percy realizing the man was trying not to keep the conversation by looking away again, he only smirked making the mans eyebrows raise further when he turned back to glance at him. "Oh? I'm Percy Jackson. I don't know about you, but I think we'll be good friends." His grin came out as his eyes sparkled.
The dark robes man stared at the younger muggle studies teacher, for some reason feeling something-something in the very recesses of his mind seemed to scream at him about. And the mans sweet like scent seemed to make him shift in his seat as if he was about to stand up and do something-the what he has no clue other then something in him was telling him to do so.
Snape had to admit to that the younger was extremely pleasant to look at, he seemed thin but for some reason he knew that the man beside him was strong-in many ways as his presence seemed to just indicate power somehow. The thin he meant wasn't scrawny but it wasn't the bulk you would normally see on a average male, he was lean and tall-just he was just a bit taller then Percy was. His skin was tanned a soft caramel like color mixed with milk, his eyes were a bright blue like jewels made from the ocean itself. His hair was wildly splayed in dark black tufts. His grin lopsided and welcoming in a mischievous way....
That made Snape pause before turning back to the front where the large doors to the great hall stood. His mind catching up so he could respond to Percy's statement. "Not in a million years." He grumbled roughly as he tried to not ponder how he had been checking the younger out.
Laughing Percy turned forward as well. A plan forming, a smirk growing. "You say that now-but I have time." He had more time then he wanted-his smirk fell for a split second but he focused back onto the present.
Snape glanced at him from his comment, frowning at his cryptic words, and split second drop of a smirk, but before he could say anything, in walked the babbling excited and or silently nervous first years.
Smiling, Percy was reminded of the younger kids just entering their first classes at camp. Some were much younger then the first years-he took his head out of his thoughts as he watched them start sorting. Giving him an idea for camp as it went on, what if camp had a way to find which godly parent you had so you can get sorted? Of course at a certain age. Unless they're already claimed. He realized this as the second time his mind turned to it-he would most likely continue to until he starts on it.
Shaking his head, he turned to watch the young Malfoy, who nodded at him as he sat, but before the hat could lay on the silver head, it yelled the house he was to be put in making Percy laugh into his hand as the boy jumped up with a bright smile to sit in Slytherin. He clapped for the boy. Making some stare at him. Espi ally the slowly clapping Snape who wondered why the new teacher knew his Godson.
After many were sorted, Daphne into Slytherin Then a Granger put into Gryffindor and Longbottom into Hufflepuff, all the way down in alphabetical order, soon his son was up. Even though the J's had passed quite a minute ago.
Minerva seemed to take a second to take a breath before reading the name off from the list she held, her voice steady as she spoke it and looked down at the children gathered before the stairs leading to the dais.
"Harry Potter." The name echoed around the room-as if it did indeed have a ceiling even though everyone knew it did-the echo was unnerving with the open sky some thought.
The hall got quiet as his son walked forward nervously but also looking miffed, or ruffled much like if Percy was to ruffle his untamed locks of hair-he knew from the way his face didn't show anything. That only his eyes and walk. He smiled when his kid met his eyes and that seemed to relax him, bringing forth his confidence as he came forward.
And before he sat he turned to the witch who had spoken his name. "Actually Professor, my name has changed for a while now-and we had owned bout the name on my letter as being incorrect-you do know my name is Potter-Jackson now right?" He asks her-Mcgonagal who stared wide eyed before she looked to Percy with a shocked expression having put the two together.
"Yup." Percy spoke as he stood. "That's my son. I thought you guys would have changed that when I put it in my letter. But oh well." He shrugged as the student body stared up at him incredulously. He then looked to his son and winked. "Harry get sorted will ya? Enough with the dramatics." He smiled as he sat down again, excitement bubbling up into his stomach.
Ignoring the many looks, the looks of curiosity, judgement, wonder and shock. The ones of contempt-of murderous intent, and of questioning.
Harry laughed and sat on the chair, blushing a bit as he had so many eyes on him as well. It took a second, because Mcgonagal was shocked but she put the hat on and everyone watched as the hat moved and wiggled atop Harry's head.
"Hmm tricky tricky you are," a voice spoke in his head and made him jump as Harry felt the hat move atop his head as if settling in. It felt like Angus had somehow had grown much bigger then a hand.
Tricky? He had thought.
"Tricky, yes. You have many qualities. A very round character you are-I would say you would not have had as many if you had stayed in the cupboard of that house."
Harry froze as fear came up from the mention. "How..." he nearly spoke aloud but clearly it was not heard aloud as the room was completely silent-he couldn't see but he was sure they were all holding their breath. How do you know that?
"I see everything you have experienced, do not worry no one will find out from me-and I will not dredge them up. I am only going to look at your qualities and see which house to put you."
Oh...okay....Harry shifted as he waited to know what house he'd be in. He hoped it was with his new friends-well maybe he'd make more in another house? But he didn't seem to want to be in a boisterous place either...
"Hm, well since I have seen all that I need, and what you wish. I have decided, though it would have been the Hufflepuff house due to your father, but they are quite a loud bunch when they want to be. So I believe this house will do for you."
And soon enough a name brought chaos around the room, a silent one where everyone just stared not knowing how to react.
Standing Harry walked over to Draco. "Welcome to the Slytherin house Harry." Draco spoke happily as he gave him room to sit beside him.
"That's my son." Percy said proudly to Snape, hoping to get a reaction-as well as he was also showing off. His eyes shimmering in his pride. Even though he had no clue about any of the houses.
All he got was a raised brow and a gaze of what seemed like a thousand questions, Not what he was expecting. There was nothing about recognizing Harry-or even knowing of any kind.
Soon as the last kid was in, Zabini, a Slytherin. Then Percy stood when Mcgonagal motioned him forward.
"Just for the fun of it, and since we all know our other teachers houses, we will sort the newest teacher of muggle studies, Percy Jackson." Dumbledore said making Percy stand to walk around the table.
Sitting on the stool Percy fidgeted before smiling at Harry who was watching with a smile himself.
The hat came over his eyes and he freaked when the hat invaded his mind. But stopped when the voice spoke.
"Don't worry, I won't touch them, just seeing the scars here is enough, I already know everything I need to know Your Majesty, you'd fit all houses but the most house you'd fit in is HUFFLEPUFF!!" Percy shrugged as he got up saying goodbye to the hat before waving to the cheering house table before walking back to his seat. Again ignoring how he flabbergasted the school once more-they all thought he'd be a Slytherin as well considering.
"With that! Let the feast begin!" Dumbledore had spoken before anyone could think anything else.
And food appeared.
The only disappointment about it for the Jackson boys, Was that it wasn't blue.
Until Percy just changed it for them. Then were they able to eat happily much to many inquisitive inquiries around the great hall when anyone were to look over at either of the Jackson.
