:: Chapter 42 :: Dumbledore

Harry walked back and forth between the couches in the common room of his-or well his fathers old rooms-Hermione and Neville sipping tea on said couches. He was waiting for the news from Nico-who left as soon as he told him his father was back and safe again. But nothing else. He was dying for more information-hoping to everything out there his father was alright. Because safe didn't mean he was unharmed.

"Harry sit down." Hermione spoke softly as she held her book in her hands, even if her complexion was pale, she kept her breathing steady. She was worried too.

"Can't." Harry grunted as he continued wearing a hole into Hogwarts floors. The carpet already waning with his continued trek.

Neville got up and grabbed Harry's hands to make him look at him instead of at nothing. "Just do it-I know waiting isn't fun but you're wearing a hole into the ground." He led Harry back to the couches  "Plus-it may be nice to sit and relax. What matters is that your dad is back-and alive."

Harry conceded to their worries and sat down but his body was still tense they could tell by the way he sat straight instead of the usual conform to the couch he did. "I guess...." he started then groaned. "I'm going to go insane soon enough." He spoke as his hands came up to his face.

"No you're going to drive all of us insane." Hermione smirked and turned a page in her rather large book. It was book on the Greek gods. It was in Greek-but she knew a nifty little spell to translate as she went. Her notes on the coffee table before her littered in unknowable notes.

"Touché." Harry sighs and finally just relaxes into the couch-fatigue catching up to him making him close his eyes.

"Why don't you write a letter to Sirius about it? Maybe you'll get an answer." Neville supplies giving Harry a biscuit and a cup of tea appeared on the table before Harry could even ask.

Harry nodded to that idea-then a house elf popped in casually startling the occupants of the room. It set another kettle of tea down, piping steam and then handed Neville a letter, bowed and left them.

"What'd you get there Nev?" Harry asks as he pours himself more tea. Stealing another biscuit.

Shrugging his shoulders Neville opened it as Hermione gave Harry some parchment and a quill. His eyes widened as he read the letter word by word. His heart sinking as it went on. "Oh...." He spoke softly.

Hermione frowns and puts her book down. "Is everything okay Nev?" Her carmel eyes stared into the hazel green of Neville's. His eyes tearing up as he sat letting the information sink in.

"My grandmother...passed away last night....I'm the lord of Longbottom now. I have to go to Gringotts and...and get the rings." He was suddenly surrounded by the comforting arms of his friends. "And Dumbledore is vetoing my right succession...."

"That donkey! I'll write to Tom-or Lucious right away!" Hermione spoke as she hastily started doing exactly what she said she would.

Harry patted Neville's hand. "It's going to be okay Nev, we'll help you out with everything you need of us."

The tears came out thickly and Neville smiled through them even if his chest felt heavy in the pain of grief. He had his friends with him.

______

Couple days later-Harry was in front of Dumbledores office door. He was already tired of the conversation that hadn't even happed yet. He wanted to crawl back home and never leave.

So he took a deep breath and knocked before he found himself moving away. He winced at how loud he had knocked-he wanted to go quieter so he could say no one answered but yet he practically banged on the door.

When the door opened he stepped through to see the old evil man petting a very still Fawkes, who looked over immediately to Harry's bright green eyes. It seemed uncomfortable with Dumbledore and Harry thought he would to if he had that mans grubby hands on himself.

Hiding a shiver he waited for the man to say anything.

"Harry, my boy." Don't call me that you- "how are you?" He asks turning to sit and motioning for Harry to sit in the comfy arm chairs in front of his desk. "Lemon drip?"

You mean poison? No thanks. "Im good Professor Dumbldore. Why'd you call me up? Am I in trouble for something?" Harry asked-feeling nauseated. Faking a concerned expression. He didn't have to do much just change his eyebrows from angry to more concerned.

"No, no of course not. Just wanting to see how you were with your father having gone missing. Severus had told me-and looked upset himself considering they were close." His periwinkle eyes sparkled as he tried to gain Harry's eye contact.

But Harry either kept his eyes on a wrinkle between white thin eyebrows or to his hands which he twiddled with so he wouldn't grab his wand from its holster. He so wanted to send a very dark curse towards the old bag. But he withstained from doing so.

"They were best of friends really-My father will be found, I have all my faith in my godfathers....even if it's been months." Harry frowns as his thoughts went towards imagining what his father looked like-mainly hurt or paler then he was before he was taken. He wasn't sure. "I hope he's alright...."

"I'm sure he is." Dumbledore spoke almost with no emotion and Harry had to keep himself in check. He was so close to exploding from just that, he wondered how he'd be able to continue to have regular or somewhat so meetings with the man.

Sighing Harry shrugged, forcing himself to relax. "My father is strong. He can do anything he puts his mind to. I believe in him. Is there anything else you need? Or can I go back?"

"There is one other thing Harry, by boy-" Harry forced down the urge to throw up. "I would like you to help me with Mr. Longbottom."

Harry saw red but stayed as calm as could be. "For what sir?" He replied shortly.

"He is to young for the Lordships he is about to possess, I believe until he is much older that someone should handle his seats until then. He is but a boy. Still in school and to have those on him now would interrupts his schooling." Dumbledore explained as if it made any sense-maybe in some way it did.

Harry did concede it was a lot-but he knew, Neville could do it, that Neville was much stronger and smarter then anyone could ever give him credit for. But-Harry found this as an in he was looking for.

"He does seem a bit stressed with it-but I'm not sure that he couldn't." Harry made himself look more unsure-as if he was actually thinking about it.

And the old man took the bait.

"It will only make his stress worse-I'm sure you can convince him to focus on his school studies then the lordships at this moment." Dumbledore spoke greedily a smile on his thin lips.

Hook-line-and sink like a dead body with rocks holding onto it in a river or ocean for Poseidon to do with what he will.

"I will think about it-but everyone is on his side so it might be difficult." Harry shrugs. "Anyways-I think potions is about to start and I don't want to be late for that class."

"Right right, of course. You best be on your way then Harry my boy, I will see you at dinner tonight then." He smiled that damn grandfatherly smile and Harry left as quickly as he could.

Once Dumbledore was unable to see him with the door closed he booked it until he couldn't breath, found himself in front of the black lake-he didn't temper most of the running there. He dropped himself onto the shore and blinked upwards towards the sky until he closed his eyes.

He breathed in deeply as he tried to let go of all the feeling sin his chest-the audacity of Dumbledore just kept bringing the burning anger back so it was hard to calm down but he found himself letting it simmer on a back stove as he watched the water ripple. It was more relaxing then forcing himself he figured.

His ears tickled slightly as he picked up on approaching footsteps. He turned his head slightly and his eyes caught silvery blue with his own. Draco was standing there.

And Harry really really just wanted to go up to him and be like they used to...but instead he got up and turned back to the castle. Walking back with a heavy feeling in his chest.

Even though they were talking outside of school-Harry still felt a little wronged and he was supposed to act like that to his other slytherin friends for now until everything was over.

And to say it didn't hurt to do that-to wait-was a lie.

_____

"Luna dear-" Hermione grabbed Lunas hands to calm her little Ravenclaw down. Her smile wise on her face as the girl smiled so brightly at her it made her chest tighten in happiness.

"Yes?" She asked and her voice was music to Hermione's ears.

"I believe you left out two very important people from that equation." Her smirk twitched at Luna now confused thinking one.

Neville sighed as he watched the girl pair  squeal over ships and stuff. He wasn't really interested he was so far signing paperwork that would safely be delivered by everyone's favorite ghost demigod instead of an owl. He would have to go to Gringotts at some point to do the rest of what he was supposed to do. He sighed again-it was going to be hard but hey-he was confident he could with the friends he had by his side. That made him smile a bit-then he was startled when two girls jumped in front of him.

"Ye-yes?" He asks shyly as they looked at him with smirks-though it did look odd on Luna Lovegood, but it still got the mischief across.

"Do you have anyone you like Nev?" Hermione asks her giggle coming from Luna as she peered at him excitedly.

"I fear if I answer-you will torment me." Neville spoke with a deadpan face as he watched them carefully.

Hermione rolled her eyes. "Barely-" she pinched her fingers to show what she meant but Neville just looked at her in doubt.

Luna smiled. "Cmon-there's somebody isn't there?"

He frowned as he decided to actually think about it-and when he did his face turned bright red and looked away from the girls who squealed. "It's nothing." He told them when they were about to speak even if his face was hot red and telling them everything.

Hermione grinned like a pixie and it made Neville nervous. He remembered all to fondly of the blue pixies in second year. "Who is it?" Her teeth looked menacing almost as he leaned away while she leaned in.

Neville's heart beat erratically as he gulped the images of who he liked popping up-then feeling sorta sad but shook it off. "Doesn't matter, can't date them anyway right now."

"Them as in multiple or something gender wise?" Luna tilted her head.

Neville groaned just as Harry walked in. Harry saw the girls leaning over-nearly powering over the boy who was practically curled into the couch by this moment in time red as an apple.

"What in the world is going on?" Completely bewildered.
