Chapter 7 - One of Us

Swiftfleck came barreling into the now not- so- busy clearing, carrying a massive mouthful of wild flowers. "Am I too late?!" She cried, "Did I miss it?!" She ran over to Harekit, "Are you an appearance yet?!" Harekit stepped back and sighed in relief, she wasn't dead! She was ok!

"It's fine, mum, i'm still a kit! You didn't miss anything!" She Explained quickly. Ravenfoot stepped forward, a smile on his face. "I beg to differ." he smirked. Swiftfleck looked down at her daughter, "What happened?" she asked teasingly. "Harekit caused quite the panic this morning! She thought you were dead. I told her you were fine, but she didn't listen." Ravenfoot pushed Harekit out from under her mum, and looked her in the eye. "Ain't that right, Harekit?" Harekit groaned, embarrassed. "But-" Ravenfoot continued. "That's not all the troubles she's caused lately,, she also snuck out last night- hunting rabbits, right Harekit?"

Swiftfleck looked at her daughter with a look of dry exhaustion. "How did I know that was going to happen?" She asked teasingly. All the tension went out of Harekit's body and she took a step back to meet her mother's eyes. "Wait,," she said cautiously. "You're,, not? Mad?". Swiftfleck laughed, and placed her paw on Harekit's back. "No," she said sweetly. "Maybe some other time I would be, but you're about to become an apprentice! What you did was dumb, yes, but that's the kind of thing you learn not to do,,, but the bravery? That something that can't be taught." She gave Harekit's ear a small lick and and laughed at her shocked face. "Gee, it's like you were trying to make be mad at you, are you disappointed I'm not?" She teased her again. "Close your mouth idiot! You look like a fish." Smokekit trotted up behind her, cautiously avoiding his mum. Harekit snapped her mouth closed, annoyed he'd seen her. "You don't have to be scared of mum y'know, she doesn't care." She told him, trying to change the subject. He gaped his jaw out in mock shock, imitating his sister. She swatted him, and he ducked out the way just as Petalstar jumped onto the leader's rock.

"May all cats of Mistclan gather under the highledge for a clan meeting!" Her voice rang out around the clearing, and cats came out their dens. Wolfleap was already in his special deputy space, under the rock. Once everyone had settled, Harekit and her brothers went to the very front of the crowd, and their mother wished them luck and went to the other side to watch. Harekit's paws were twitching with excitement and pure nerves. She had asked Ravenfoot to talk to Petalstar about her role change,, but what if the leader had said no? There was no time to talk to her and make sure now, she would just have to accept whatever role she got. *Thats ok*, she thought. *Whatever I am, warrior or medicine cat, I'll do it to best of my ability, and make Mistclan proud!*

The ceremony ran smoothly during her brother's turns, and they got appointed to great mentors. Flintpaw was given Wolfleap, and Smokepaw got a quietly determined, small she-cat named Sparrowsong. It was her turn now. "Harekit!" Petalstar addressed the final kit for the ceremony. "Please come forward to receive your apprentice name." Harekit stepped out into the middle of the circle, looking up at Petalstar on the rock above her. Wolfleap gave her a smile with Flintpaw next to him. She smiled back,, then looked around to give Skyspeck a hopeful look. But,, where was she? She whipped her head around a few times, looking for her in the crowd. Nowhere. She realised she had a panicked look on her face and locked eyes with Gingerheart over in the back, pretending that the sweet elder was the one she was looking for. She flashed her a smile and turned back to Petalstar, who had just finished with the rest of her speech. "Harekit, do you promise to serve your clan to your upmost ability?" Harekit puffed out her chest and spoke loud and strong. "I do!" Petalstar gave a proud smile and spoke again. "Your mentor will be Skyspeck, and you will work alongside her in the medicine den as requested. Let's all give Harepaw a big cheer!" The clan erupted in meows, not just for Harepaw, but for her brothers as well. She basked in the noise, relived she got what she asked for. She noticed Petalstar leaving out the part where the new apprentice touches noses with their mentor.. Had she noticed Skyspeck's absence before the ceremony started? She still hadn't turned up, and Harepaw was getting worried. Where was she,,

Brightspot, Gingerheart, her mother and her Brother's mentors all came up to congratulate her throughout the rest of the afternoon. They ate prey and basked in the sun, enjoying a rest. Petalstar slept on her rock, watching over the clan's fun. Wolfleap went up periodically to check on her, and once to bring her a rabbit, but she didn't interact with anyone else. Harepaw jumped at the sound of a loud sigh from next to her. "She's a weird one, isn't she?" Gingerheart laughed next to her as Harepaw recovered herself. Harepaw thought for a moment, then looked at her. "What?". The elder snorted and explained it to her. "She is always so isolated, don't you think? Both the other leaders in my lifetime, Sagestar and Nightstar, always joined in on things like feasts and sun basking days after ceremonies,, but Petalstar just stays by herself, only ever talking to Wolfleap." Harepaw thought for a moment. She was right, Petalstar acted like a completely different leader to Nightstar. She had never met the leader before Nightstar, Sagestar, but it sounds like she was around long enough in Gingerheart's life for her to remember how she acted. "Maybe it will be good to have some change around here,," she mumbled.

The rest of the afternoon was uneventful, and Harepaw moved into the apprentice den with her brothers. It was great to have so much room, and the space was cool and breezy from the purposeful holes in the side to let air in during summer. The soft snores all around her were comforting, instead of the constant noise from the 2 - moon old kits back in the nursery. She slept well, despite her worries about Skyspeck, and when she woke up, there was a fresh mouse next to her bed. She picked it up in her mouth and trotted out the den, confused. Was nest delivery of food normal? She looked around at who was up, and saw most of the clan,, odd for such a hot morning. Wait,, hang on-. She squinted at the group in the middle she though was a early patrol getting ready to go, but she saw a few kits there too-

She padded over, and put the mouse down to see what was happening. Shoving her way into the front of the group, she saw Skyspeck, just,,, sitting there? After a full day of unwarned absence, just,, there,? "WHAT THE HELL!?" Harepaw yelled, standing right in front of the medicine cat. "WHERE *WERE* YOU? YOU MISSED YOUR OWN APPRENTICE'S CEREMONY FOR STARCLAN'S SAKE-". Skyspeck lifted her head and Harepaw saw tears welling up in her eyes. "I'm sorry!" She cried. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there, and I'm sorry I made you worry! I knew you were going to ask to be with me- and I wanted to make you happy so I went over and crossed the  border to Pondclan and picked those marigold flowers you were telling me you loved while we were sorting,, I was going to give them to you as a gift but I was caught over the border and taken back for questioning-" Harepaw softened, unaware that the whole thing was just Skyspeck trying to make her happy. The desperation in her voice was painful to hear- and she hoped with all her heart that her mentor wouldn't be punished for her harmless trip.  "It's ok- it's ok!" Harepaw pressed her head onto Skyspeck's. She whispered hurriedly,"It's alright- I'm sorry I had no idea,, are you ok?" Skyspeck nodded. "I'm fine now I'm home-" she breathed. They stayed there while the rest of the cats walked off, uninterested now they knew the story. Skyspeck got up and told Harepaw to follow her. They went into the medicine den, where Skyspeck told her to move her nest in with hers, as other medicine apprentices would. She moved it and then went behind the waterfall to check on the gardens, and when she came back, there was a bright, beautiful bunch of marigolds sitting in her nest.
