Living the Night Life
The night was quiet, not a sound on the portable police scanner Kirishima carried, hooked to headphones in his ears. He leaned his head back against the dumpster he was hiding behind, sighing.
"I could have been playing video games with the squad right now." He said to himself.
As a response to the sound, the dumpster made a loud banging noise. Kirishima leapt to his feet in surprise, looking around for what had caused the commotion.
"Ground Zero?"
"Ah fuck. It's you." Ground Zero was standing at the entrance to the alley, arm steaming with the remnants of the explosion he had caused.
"What was that all about?" Kirishima asked.
"Only suspicious people hang out in dumpsters."
"Ah, but I am doing something illegal. Or, I would be if there was actually crime happening."
The blond's mask moved a little and Kirishima could only guess that he was cocking his eyebrow under there. "Who said there wasn't crime happening? You have an illegal police scanner and you're probably thinking of doing unwarranted vigilante work, idiot."
"You gonna turn me in? Cuz I could turn you in too!" Kirishima smirked. Ground Zero rolled his eyes.
"It's too fucking quiet tonight."
"To be fair, it's Tuesday. Not really Prime Crime Time™."
"Don't ever rhyme like that again. I will kill you."
"Wanna do something? I'm bored to death and I don't want to feel like the night is wasted."
"I don't even know you." Ground Zero crossed his arms, leaning against one of the buildings that bordered the alleyway.
"Sure you do! We saved a kid together yesterday and I destroyed a cop car."
"The news claimed you were some kind of anarchist who destroyed the car as a political statement."
"Neat! I mean...I'd prefer to have a more inspiring activist image than that, but it'll do." Kirishima smiled brightly, showing off his pointy teeth.
"That's stupid. Why would you want to be on the news? You could get caught that way."
"I could get caught whether I'm in the news or not. It's not about me."
The other male sat down on the dirty pavement, looking up at him with a confused expression. "What is it about...for you I mean?"
Kirishima's smile softened. He sat down across from the other hero. "It's about my friends."
"How?"
"Well...they all have quirks. Two of them have visible ones and the other one can't control his very well. I don't want them to have to live in a world that's afraid of them."
Ground Zero blinked. He looked speechless.
"And besides," Kirishima continued, "If I'm going to get in trouble for using my quirk, I might as well save as many lives as I can before that. Maybe, if I'm lucky, I'll inspire others to be like me."
"That's cheesy."
"It is not!"
"It's super cheesy."
"And your reasons are any better?"
Ground Zero shrugged. "I'm just doing what's right."
"If I'm being honest, you really don't seem to be the type." Kirishima admitted.
"The type for what?"
"The type to become a hero."
Ground Zero scowled. "And why is that?"
"Because you're so angry."
"Say that again you shitty haired little punk!" He raised his arm in a threatening manner.
Kirishima laughed. "See what I mean?"
"You're not the type to be a hero either! You're annoying and dumb!"
"Wow. I'm flattered."
Ground Zero stood, the bitter expression still fixed on what Kirishima could see of his face. "I'm done scouting for the night. Hopefully, we won't cross paths any time soon."
Kirishima's smile grew three sizes like the Grinch's heart. "I'm not making any promises."
