20; I'm Not Leaving You Behind

"What do you mean you killed him?" Dean questioned as he narrowed his eyes at Quinn. He wasn't sure if he believed a word that came out of her mouth. To him, it was all a little too easy that she just happened to get the colt, kill Azazel and then track them down.

"I mean, I went into his room while he was sleeping and I shot him in the head," Quinn explained, saying each word slowly so there was no misunderstanding.

"Right." Dean scoffed. In his opinion, her story still didn't explain much. He just couldn't shake the feeling that she couldn't be trusted- it was a completely different feeling than when he first met Mackenzie, right off the bat he felt like she was trustworthy.

"Wow, so it-it's over. He's really dead," Mackenzie said, her tone barely above a whisper as she slowly sat down on the bed, her mind racing a mile a minute.

She couldn't believe that the demon her family had been after all her life was finally gone. The demon that killed Dean and Sam's mother, as well as, the latter's girlfriend, was dead. It was over, and now, she couldn't help but wonder what would she do now.

For so long, she searched for the demon for revenge and for Quinn to reunite her family- now both had been done, so who was she now? What was her purpose in the world now?

"Well, it's not really over," Quinn stated, pulling her out of her thoughts.

"What do you mean?" Sam asked with a confused look on his face.

"Killing Azazel pissed off a lot of demons, he had a lot of bottom feeders who worshipped him. And now that he's dead, they want the person who did it- meaning me- to pay for it. They won't rest until they have my head on a silver platter," Quinn explained to the trio.

"So you brought them all here after us? Real nice," Dean said sarcastically.

"What else was I supposed to do?" Quinn scoffed, throwing her arms out in frustration.

"Not lead tons of pissed off demons to us," Dean stated as his eyebrows lowered in anger.

"You're the Winchesters!" Quinn pointed out. "You hunt monsters for a living."

"We help innocent people." Dean folded his arms across his chest.

"So are you saying I'm not innocent?" Quinn laid a hand on her chest. The look on her face showing how upset the comment made her.

"Dean..." Mackenzie stood up from the bed, her tone warning him not to even think of answering that question. Grabbing her sister's hands, she said, "Of course you are, Quinny. You were dragged into all of this just like we were and you're just doing the best you can to survive. But you don't have to do it alone, we'll help you."

After flashing her sister a smile, Mackenzie turned her head to look at the brothers. "Right, guys?"

Ignoring her question, Dean turned to look at Quinn as he asked one of the questions that had been driving him crazy since he walked into the room. "How did you find us? It's not like we leave a trail of breadcrumbs for anyone to follow, so how the hell did you do it?"

"After living with demons all my life, I learned how to track people," Quinn answered simply, which in his opinion, like all her other stories, it didn't explain anything at all.

Mackenzie saw Dean open his mouth and knew he was going to have something else negative to say, causing her to cut in and quickly change the subject. "So you two said you had a new case?"

"Uh, yeah," Sam answered when he noticed Dean wasn't. "Dad sent us more coordinates."

"Your Dad? As in 'The John Winchester'?" Quinn questioned with wide eyes, her lips turned up in a smile. She had a hard time hiding her excitement- which made Dean suspect her even more.

"Yeah, so?" He narrowed his eyes at her, wondering what kind of bullshit explanation she would give this time.

"Just wondering." Quinn shrugged. "I heard a lot about him from different demons. He sounds like a real badass."

"So what's the case?" Mackenzie cut in, knowing Dean wanted to interrogate her sister more.

"Don't know yet," Sam answered with an annoyed sigh. He still wasn't happy about being sent to do different cases when they should be busy looking for their father. "We'll find out more when we get there, I guess."

"Well, we better hit the road then." Mackenzie looked over at her sister. "You can ride with me."

"Whoa, wait a minute, who says she's going with us?" Dean motioned over to Quinn.

"I did." Mackenzie folded her arms across her chest, daring him to try to fight her on this, she wasn't going to back down.

"We don't even know her." Dean took a step toward her.

"I do! She's my sister!" Mackenzie took her own step, coming to a stop in front of him. "How would you feel if I asked you to leave Sam behind?"

"That's different and you know it," Dean argued. "Sam hasn't been living with demons all his life. How do we know this isn't a trap?"

"A trap for what?" Mackenzie asked.

"A trap to kill us," Dean answered.

"If she wanted to kill me, she could have done it last night," Mackenzie pointed out.

"Not if she's trying to gain your trust first!" Dean argued.

It seemed like the closer they stepped toward each other, the louder they become. The two wore identical expressions; eyebrows lowered, noses flaring, chest heaving and a lot of finger pointing. Like with any argument, they were both too stubborn to back down first, it usually took Sam stepping in to stop them.

"Are they always like this?" Quinn leaned toward Sam but kept her eyes on the argument going on in front of her. She couldn't deny that it was very entertaining to watch.

"Pretty much." Sam sighed, moving his head back and forth each time one of them spoke.

"Don't make me grab more ice, Dean," Mackenzie threatened as she flashed him a smug smile.

Dean flinched at her words but tried to appear brave as he scoffed. "I'm not scared of you or your ice, sweetheart."

Realizing this was going on too long and getting off the subject, Sam finally stepped in between them. "Okay, okay, guys, that's enough!"

"Yeah, just stop fighting." Quinn took a step forward. "If it's that big of a deal, I'll just stay here until I can come up with a more permanent place to stay."

"No, you're not staying here when demons are after you." Mackenzie glanced over at her sister.

"If she wants to stay, let her stay." Dean threw out his arms.

"Okay, fine." Mackenzie nodded, then took a step back to stand beside her sister. "But if she's staying, then I'm staying."

"You are not staying, Kenz," Dean snapped.

"You can't tell me what to do, Dean," Mackenzie pointed out.

"Yes I can!" he argued.

"No, you can't!" she argued back. She spent most of her life being told what she could and couldn't do- she would be damned if she let someone else boss her around.

"Damn it, Kenzie, I'm not losing you again!" he yelled out, causing Mackenzie's eyes to widen. She couldn't believe he would say something like that and from the looks on Sam and Quinn's face, they couldn't believe it either.

Clearing his throat, Dean saw their shocked faces staring at him and wished he could take the words back. He never meant to blurt that out- he wasn't the type to wear his heart on his sleeve, but the thought of leaving without Mackenzie again sent him into a panic.

Even if things weren't great between them, he knew he didn't want to lose her from his life- besides he couldn't help but wonder how many more chances he had with bumping into her. What if they separated and their paths never crossed again?

Needing to escape, the room suddenly feeling like it was closing in, Dean took a step back as he threw up his hands in frustration. "You know what? Just do whatever you want. I'm out of here."

"I'll let you two finish getting ready," Sam said to the sisters.

He shot Mackenzie a quick look before leaving the room- as if pleading with her to go with them. He had a feeling it would destroy Dean to leave without her, but he knew his brother, and he knew Dean would never beg her to go. His outburst earlier was as close as he would get to asking.

"Well, it's official," Quinn breathed out once they were alone.

"What is?" Mackenzie shot her a confused look.

"He loves you." Quinn smiled.

Mackenzie scoffed as she turned her back toward the bed to pack. "You don't know that."

"Am I the only one who saw how angry he looked at the thought of you staying behind?" Quinn didn't wait for an answer, "He was pissed at the thought of losing you, sis, that means he loves you."

"You have no idea what you're talking about." Mackenzie zipped her bag. "You should go get ready, we need to hit the road."

Quinn ignored her comment. "And you love him too, right?"

"I'll meet you outside." Mackenzie ignored the question and picked up her bag, then walked out of the room, leaving Quinn standing in the middle of the room with a knowing smile on her face.

Hours later, Dean blew out a sigh and pressed his foot down more on the gas. It had been a long and tiring drive- made worse by having Sam staring at him the whole damn time.

It had started outside the motel room after he had stupidly blurted out to Mackenzie that he didn't want to lose her. He knew Sam was itching to question him. He had been curious about his history with Mackenzie for a while now- his brother wasn't stupid, he knew there was more going on between them than having a little pizza date when they were in their teens.

Once they had hit the road, Dean had done everything he could to ignore Sam; he listened to all his favorite songs as loud as he could- hoping if he annoyed his brother enough that he would stop staring at him, but that plan didn't work. Instead, his little brother was able to out-annoy him, causing him to finally sigh and reach out to turn the radio off before speaking up.

"Okay, let's have it. I know you want to say something."

"What makes you think I have something to say?" Sam asked with an innocent shrug.

"It might have to do with the fact that you won't stop staring at me." Dean shot him a dirty look, then looked back at the road.

"Okay, so, what was that about back there? When you told Kenzie you didn't want to lose her again?" Sam questioned.

"And here we go." Dean sighed.

"No, I'm serious, Dean. I know something had to have happened between you two...something more than just us going out for pizza years ago, so tell me." Sam turned to look at his brother. "What is the real story with you and Kenzie?"

Blowing out a breath, Dean tightened his hold on the steering wheel. "Alright, something did happen."

Looking at his brother for a moment, Dean saw the curious look on his face, he was hanging on his every word. "I ran into her two years ago. I had just finished a case and had gone by the library to search for another one and she was there to research. We ran into each other outside."

He paused for a moment, the memory of bumping into her outside the building crossed his mind. A ghost of a smile appeared on his face as he remembered how his heart raced when he realized he had found her again after all these years. He had always hoped he would see her again one day but figured it would never happen- life was never that kind to him.

"We decided to hang out to catch up and we really hit it off. So when it was time for me to leave, I asked her to join me on the road, but instead, she left with her dad." Any happiness he felt from the memory was gone.

"And that's it," he quietly added with a shrug.

Sam slowly nodded his head, going over the story in his head. A lot of things were starting to make sense now, but there was one thing that left him confused.

He looked over at his brother. "There's one thing I don't understand. If she decided not to leave with you, then why is she so mad at you?"

"You'll have to ask her that yourself, because I have no idea," Dean answered honestly. "I've been asking myself that same question since she punched me in the woods that day."

Sam couldn't stop a chuckle as he remembered the day they showed up at a house and saw Mackenzie fleeing the scene. After catching her in the woods behind the house, she and Dean had words, which resulted in her punching him in the face.

When he saw Dean snap his head to the side to glare at him, he coughed to cover up the laugh as he mumbled out an apology.

The two were quiet for a moment before Sam looked over at him. "You still care about her, don't you?"

"Okay, share time is over." Dean turned the radio back on, causing his brother to smile. By avoiding the question, that was all the answer he needed.

As one of his favorite rock songs began to blare through the speakers, he couldn't even enjoy it as he thought about Sam's question. He wished he could say he didn't care about her anymore- it would certainly make it easier to get over her- but the truth was, he had never stopped caring about her. He had spent two years being pissed at her, but he had never stopped caring.

Blowing out a breath, he ran a hand through his hair as another one of Sam's questions went through his head. Why was she so pissed at him? She was the one who chose to leave with her father instead of him; so why was she acting like he had abandoned her?

And then there was her comment at the asylum that left him confused. She mentioned that he was the one who didn't show up and ran away, but that wasn't the truth. She was the one who came by his motel and told John to tell him bye. He had told her the night before that he would make her talk to him about it one day and he had a feeling 'one day' was coming up really soon.
