17; Split Up
Later that night, Mackenzie, Dean, and Sam went back to the asylum. As the trio walked down a hall together, Dean was using a homemade EMF meter, while Mackenzie and Sam were walking on either side of him- each holding a flashlight in their hands.
"Getting readings?" Sam glanced over at his brother.
"Yeah, big time," Dean answered.
"Probably multiple spirits out and about." Mackenzie glanced over at the EMF meter which was lighting up like crazy.
"And if these uncovered bodies are causing the haunting-"
"We gotta find 'em and burn 'em," Dean stated, interrupting Sam. "Just be careful though. The only thing that makes me more nervous than a pissed off spirit, is the pissed off spirit of a psycho killer."
Sam and Mackenzie nodded their heads in agreement before Sam walked into a room while Mackenzie and Dean continued to walk down the long hallway together.
Minutes later, they heard Sam yell out for them, causing Dean and Mackenzie to bolt down the hall and into the room Sam had gone into earlier.
"Shotgun," Sam called out as an old woman began to walk toward him with her hands reaching out for him.
Dean quickly grabbed a shotgun out of the bag he was holding, then yelled out for his brother to get down.
As soon as Sam hit the floor, Dean fired off a shot, hitting the ghostly woman with rock salt and causing her to disappear before their eyes.
"Sam, are you okay?" Mackenzie rushed over to him and helped him stand up.
"Yeah, yeah I'm fine," Sam answered, then spoke to them both, "That was just weird though."
"Yeah. You're telling me." Dean turned around to leave the room.
"No, Dean, I mean it was weird that she didn't attack me." Sam followed his brother out of the room.
"What do you mean?" Mackenzie joined them out in the hall with a confused look on her face.
"I mean she didn't hurt me, she didn't even try," Sam answered. "So if she didn't wanna hurt me then what did she want?"
Before Dean or Mackenzie could answer, they all heard a noise coming from one of the other rooms nearby. Dean raised the shotgun as Sam and Mackenzie shined their flashlights inside, but all they saw was a metal bed with old ripped sheets lying on its side.
The three hunters slowly made their way inside the room and toward the bed. Dean and Sam came to a stop as Mackenzie walked closer to the bed when she noticed someone was hiding behind it.
"Hey, be careful," Dean whispered out, the last thing he wanted to see was her getting hurt.
Nodding her head to let him know she heard him, she took another small step, then reached out to pull the bed down, causing a blonde headed girl to gasp in surprise and begin to panic when she saw three unfamiliar people in the room with her.
"Hey, hey it's okay. We're not going to hurt you." Mackenzie tried to comfort the girl. "What's your name?"
"Katherine," the girl said. "Kat."
"Okay, Kat, I'm Kenzie and this is Sam and Dean," Mackenzie said with a kind smile as she introduced everyone.
"What are you doing here?" Sam asked her with a surprised look on his face, he couldn't believe anyone would come inside this spooky place.
"My boyfriend, Gavin," Kat answered.
"Is he here?" Dean spoke up.
"Somewhere. He thought it would be fun, try and see some ghosts. I thought it was all just, you know, pretend," Kat explained before a fearful look appeared on her face. "But, I've seen things. I heard Gavin scream and..."
"Okay, Kat, don't worry, I'll get you out here while they look for your boyfriend," Mackenzie suggested when her voice trailed off. She reached out to lightly grabbed the scared girl's hand hoping to comfort her. She knew how scary it could be once you found out that the things that go bump in the night were real.
"No. I'm not going to leave without Gavin. I'm coming with you." Kat turned her attention to the brothers.
"It's no joke around here okay. It's dangerous," Dean said, hoping to get through to the girl. In his opinion Mackenzie had the right idea- get the girl out while they searched for the boyfriend.
"That's why I gotta find him," Kat said, hoping she sounded stronger than she felt. She wanted nothing more than to leave this horrible place, but she couldn't walk away without knowing her boyfriend was okay.
Dean, Sam, and Mackenzie all looked at each other with a shrug, they knew it would be best to get Kat out to safety, but they also knew they didn't have enough time to stand around arguing about it. As long as Kat felt up to it, she could help them search for her boyfriend, then they would get the couple out of there as soon as possible.
"Alright, I guess we split up then," Dean said, then nodded his head toward the doorway. "Let's go."
After giving Dean her flashlight, Mackenzie and Sam went down a hall toward one end of the building, while Dean and Kat went the opposite way to look for Kat's boyfriend, Gavin.
Mackenzie and Sam slowly made their way down the hall, peeking into each room they came across and calling out Gavin's name every few minutes.
"Hey, down there." Sam pointed his flashlight down the hall where they saw someone laying on the floor.
"Think that's Gavin?" Mackenzie questioned.
"It's got to be," Sam answered, thinking what were the odds of another person being lost in the building.
Rushing down the hall, Sam passed the flashlight over to her, then kneeled down beside the young man and shook his shoulders to wake him up. Mackenzie stood beside Sam and shined a flashlight on Gavin as he slowly opened his eyes- seeing two people standing beside him, he began to freak out.
"Hey, Gavin. It's okay, I'm here to help," Sam said, trying to calm the younger boy down.
"Who are you?" Gavin asked confused.
"My name is Sam and this is Kenzie." Sam gestured between himself and Mackenzie, then looked back at Gavin. "We found your girlfriend."
"Kat? Is she alright?" Gavin stood up and looked at the strange man and woman beside him- wondering if he could trust them.
"Yeah, she's worried about you." Mackenzie gave him a friendly smile, hoping to put him at ease. "Are you okay?"
"I was running. I think I fell," Gavin answered.
"You were running from what?" Mackenzie asked.
"There was...there was this girl. Her face. It was all messed up," Gavin explained.
"Okay listen, did this girl, did she try and hurt you?" Sam asked him.
"What? No, she...uh..."
"She what?" Mackenzie asked when he paused.
"She...kissed me," Gavin said slowly.
"Uh...um..." Sam stuttered in surprise. "But...but she didn't hurt you, physically?"
"Dude! She kissed me. I'm scarred for life," Gavin exclaimed, causing Mackenzie to chuckle quietly to herself.
She knew the situation wasn't funny, but she couldn't help but chuckle as the boy freaked out. With all the things a spirit could do, kissing was the least of his worries.
"Well, trust me, it could have been worse," Sam pointed out. "Now do you remember anything else?"
"She, uh...actually, she tried to whisper something in my ear," Gavin answered.
"What?" Sam asked.
"I don't know, I ran like hell," Gavin stated.
Looking over at Sam, Mackenzie began to think that maybe he was right earlier. Maybe the spirits weren't trying to hurt people, maybe they were trying to tell them something, maybe even warn them.
While Mackenzie and Sam were talking to Gavin; on the other end of the building, Dean and Kat were walking down a hall together. Dean shined the flashlight in front of them until the light began to fade.
"You son of a bitch." Dean shook the flashlight, then reached into his pocket and pulled out a lighter when he realized it wasn't going to come back on
Hearing Kat freaking out beside him, he tried to ease her mind. "It's all right, I got a lighter."
Feeling someone grab her arm, Kat glanced behind her where Dean was. "Ow. You're hurting my arm."
"What are you talking about?" Dean turned to look at her with a confused look on his face. He realized they were too far apart for him to be touching her, they looked down in surprise to see a hand holding Kat's arm.
Before Dean could do anything, the hand pulled Kat into a room and slammed the metal door closed. Rushing over to the door, Dean tried everything he could to open it, but the door remained locked tight.
"Lemme out. Please!" Kat's muffled voice called out from inside the room as she banged on the door.
As Dean tried to break down the door; Sam, Mackenzie, and Gavin ran down the hall toward him.
"What's going on?" Sam asked.
"She's inside with one of them," Dean answered as he continued to try to break down the door.
Mackenzie looked over at the door with a worried look on her face as they heard Kat screaming for help, they all felt at a loss on how to help her.
Remembering what happened to him earlier, Sam had an idea. He walked closer to the door and yelled, "Kat, it's not going to hurt you. Listen to me. You've got to face it, you've got to calm down."
"She's gotta what!" Dean looked over at his brother with a shocked look on his face.
"He's right, Dean, the spirits aren't trying to hurt people, they're trying to tell us something," Mackenzie said, agreeing with Sam. Between what happened to Sam earlier and what Gavin said, it seemed like these spirits were trying to get a message to them.
"I have to what?" Kat cried out.
"These spirits, they're not trying to hurt us, they're trying to communicate. You gotta face it. You gotta listen to it," Sam explained to the scared girl locked inside the room.
"You face it!" Kat yelled.
"It's the only way to get out of there," Sam stated.
"No," Kat cried.
"Kat, he's right. You have to listen, just listen and it'll all be okay." Mackenzie took a step closer to the door.
Everyone stood in silence and waited to see what would happen next, the longer the silence went on the more worried they got. Mackenzie and Sam glanced at each other for a moment- both of them worried they were wrong and just put an innocent person in danger.
"Man, I hope you two are right about this," Dean mumbled to them as they stood on either side of him.
"So do I," Sam mumbled back. He looked over at Mackenzie again, knowing the worried look on her face mirrored his own.
After what felt like forever, the door finally opened and Kat slowly walked out, Gavin rushed to his girlfriend and wrapped his arms around her to comfort her the best he could.
Sam ran inside the room, then looked over at Dean and Mackenzie and shook his head, letting them know the room was now empty.
"One thirty-seven," Kat mumbled.
"Sorry?" Dean asked confused.
"It whispered in my ear. 137." Kat stepped out of her boyfriend's arms.
"Room number," Sam and Dean said at the same time as Mackenzie nodded her head in agreement.
"So, now, are you guys ready to leave this place?" Dean asked the young couple.
"That's an understatement." Kat wrapped her arms around herself.
Dean looked over at Sam and Mackenzie. "Okay, you two get them out of here. I'm going to go find room 137."
"Wait, should you be going alone? Who knows what's waiting for you in there," Mackenzie said in concern as she took a step toward him. She knew he was an experienced hunter, but he wasn't invincible- something could happen and that thought almost sent her into a panic.
"Don't worry, I'll be fine," Dean reassured her. He couldn't deny that it warmed his heart to know she was concerned about him. Without stopping to think about it, he laid a hand on the side of her neck. His thumb lightly stroked her cheek as he said for only her to hear, "But, I'll feel better if I know you're safe."
"We're all getting out of here safe," she promised him.
"You're damn right we are." He flashed her that trademark smile that made her weak in the knees.
"Be careful," she whispered.
"You be careful too. You and Sam." He dropped his head slightly to catch her eyes. "Watch out for each other, okay?"
She nodded her head at his request, then felt his hand leave her face- leaving her skin feeling cold. She watched him walk down the hall until he turned a corner and disappeared from her view, then she turned to face Sam, Kat, and Gavin, noticing they were all watching her.
Clearing her throat, she nodded to the side. "Come on. Let's get out of here."
The group was walking down the hall in silence for several minutes when Mackenzie noticed Sam looking at her from the corner of her eye. She opened her mouth to say something, but before she could, he beat her to it.
"Don't worry, Kenzie, he'll be okay."
"What?" She turned her head.
"Dean...you're worried about him," he said stating the obvious. "But he'll be okay. Trust me, he has faced worse."
She flashed him a small smile and gave him a nod, letting him know she heard him.
"Look, I know I don't know what went on between you two, but I can tell you care about him and if it helps, I think he cares about you too," Sam stated. He was still very confused about whatever was going on with them, but he had noticed the looks they've been giving each other lately- that was one thing they couldn't hide.
"I agree, you can tell he cares," Kat spoke up when she overheard them talking.
"I second that, he definitely has the hots for you," Gavin added.
"What are all of you even talking about?" Mackenzie came to a quick stop to look at them in surprise.
"It's the way he looks at you," Kat explained. "Earlier when you all found me in that room, while you were talking to me, he kept looking at you with this worried look on his face; like he was scared I was going to hurt you or something was going to jump out and attack. You can tell he doesn't want to lose you."
"Okay, can we stop talking about my love life- or lack thereof- and just get the hell out of this creepy place," Mackenzie snapped at them.
Without another word, she began to walk down the hall again, trying to get away from the things they had said, but their words were swirling around in her mind.
She couldn't think about this now. She didn't even want to deal with her own feelings now, much less hear about Dean's. Trying her best to push him out of her mind, she jogged over to a door and pushed against it, but was surprised when it wouldn't even budge.
"Well so much for that," she mumbled to herself as the others caught up to her.
Seeing another door on the other side of the room, Sam rushed over to it but quickly found out it was locked too.
"Alright. I think we have a small problem." Sam walked back over to the group. None of the doors would open and no amount of pushing or slamming against it was doing any good- it looked like they were all stuck inside the asylum.
"Then break it down," Gavin stated.
"I don't think that'll work," Mackenzie pointed out as she tried to push against the door again.
"Then a window," Gavin suggested.
"They're barred," Kat said.
"Then how are we supposed to get out?" Gavin asked with a worried look on his face. He was trying hard to be brave, but it wasn't easy- he had enough of this place and just wanted to go home.
"That's the point. We're not. There's something in here. It doesn't want us to leave," Mackenzie said.
"Those patients-"
"No. Something else," Sam said, interrupting Kat as he looked down the long hallway.
"I'll see if I can find any more doors, maybe we'll get lucky and one will be unlocked," Mackenzie suggested. She knew there wasn't a way out, not until they killed whatever was keeping them locked in, but she needed to do something, she couldn't just sit around while they waited to be picked off one by one.
Minutes later, she returned to the group shaking her head. "I've looked everywhere. There's no other way out."
"So what the hell are we gonna do?" Gavin asked in a panic.
"Well for starters we're not gonna panic," Sam pointed out.
"Why the hell not?" Gavin yelled.
"'Cause that's what they want, Gavin, what ever is doing this is feeding off of your fear," Mackenzie snapped, then instantly felt bad. She didn't mean to get an attitude with him, but the situation was already tense and the longer Dean was gone, the more worried she became for his safety.
Seeing the shocked look on Gavin's face, she ran a hand through her hair and blew out a breath to get her own emotions under control. She flashed him an apologetic smile, then added in a nicer tone, "So just try to remain calm, please."
Before anyone could say anything else, Sam's cell phone began to ring. He quickly pulled it out of his pocket and hit the speaker button so Mackenzie could hear the conversation.
"Hey," Sam said into the phone.
"Sam, it's me. I see it. It's coming at me," they faintly heard Dean say over the phone.
"Where are you?" Sam asked in concern.
"I'm in the basement. Hurry up!" Dean called out before the line went dead.
"Okay, one of us needs to help Dean and the other-"
"Stays here," Mackenzie finished for Sam, with her heart beating in her chest. She could still hear the panic in Dean's voice before the call ended. She was trying not to think of worst case scenarios, but it was hard. She just had to repeat to herself over and over that he was okay- he had to be okay.
"Want to 'rock paper scissors' for it?" Sam placed his fist in the palm of his hand.
"Yeah, winner stays here and loser goes after Dean," Mackenzie said agreeing with him as she copied him by placing her fist in the palm of her hand.
"1...2...3..." Mackenzie and Sam said together before Mackenzie laid her hand out flat for paper while Sam held out two fingers for scissors.
"Guess I'm going after Dean," Mackenzie said as Sam handed her a shotgun and flashlight. She was secretly happy she lost, she just wanted to find Dean and make sure that whatever he came across didn't hurt him.
"Be careful," Sam said, earning a head nod from her before she began to walk away in search for Dean.
She jogged down several hallways and glanced in all the rooms as she yelled out Dean's name- her voice becoming frantic the more empty rooms she came across. When the flashlight began to fade, she shook it, trying to get it to work as a curse word slipped from her lips.
Suddenly a door opened behind her, causing her to spin around and point the shotgun toward the room before she slowly began to walk inside.
"Dean?" She walked further into the room to look for him.
Up ahead she saw a shadow moving behind an old ratty curtain and began to carefully walk closer to it. She reached out a shaky hand to pull the curtain back but was surprised when no one was standing on the other side. Where the hell was Dean?
Turning back around, she gasped in surprise when an old man was standing in front of her with ragged hair and clothes, he grabbed her face as his hands began to glow.
"Don't be afraid. I'm going to make you all better," he whispered to her before everything went black.
