Chapter 31
I'm not really an angry person. Not demonstrably so anyway. I'm more of a quietly-seething-for-a-long-time type of girl. Holds-a-grudge-and-never-lets-on. Y'know, the classic passive-aggressive type. But for the second time in less than a week I am absolutely furious.
"Care to explain, Chris?" I snap, folding my arms across my chest and glaring at my so-called boyfriend. He looks nervous.
He fucking should look nervous.
Calum clears his throat. "I'll - um - give you two some privacy," he mutters, backing out of his own office and closing the door behind him. Given he's always been a bit precious about his office and who he has in it, it's obviously a sign of how nervous my anger has made him too.
"How much did you hear?" Chris asks softly, his hazel eyes worried.
"That you need to tell me the truth about something," I say coldly. "Something I might hate you for?"
My head is all over the place at the moment. Could he have cheated on me? Surely not, when we've only been together a matter of days? Regardless, could I forgive him that? I just can't think what else it could possibly be.
"I haven't, you know, cheated. If that's what you're thinking," he assures me hastily. Reading my mind as usual. Although I also think it's the logical conclusion to assume I'd jump to, under the circumstances.
I can feel the anger draining out of me. It's always been hard for me to maintain that level of rage for long. I can feel the tears creeping into my eyes again and tightly close them in an attempt to hold them in. "Just tell me what you've done," I whisper, defeated.
"Look, sit down first. Please" He pulls out a chair for me. I don't want to do anything he tells me to but my legs are wobbly and feel like they might give way under me at any minute so I drop into the seat.
(I realise I'm being a bit of a drama queen here, by the way. But I'm really not used to this much drama in my life, so let me have this, okay?)
Chris perches himself on the end of Calum's desk and bites his lip. "Okay, I'm going to tell you the truth. But please don't freak out, alright? Just let me explain first?"
I nod silently.
He takes a deep breath. "I don't actually work here," he says slowly.
What the hell?
