Chapter 3 (Tessa)
While Hardin changes into his costume, I decide to start getting Auden ready for the night.
"Mama!" Auden screams excitedly as I walk into the room. "Is it time for candy?"
I laugh. "Yes, baby. It's time to put on your costume so you can get candy."
"Candy! Candy! Candy!" Auden screams as he runs to his bedroom, leaving his drawing and markers scattered across the table.
I follow him to his room with the red Teletubby costume, only to find he's started to put on his other costume. "Auden? This is your costume."
He looks at the costume in my hands before shouting, "No! I'm Superman!"
"I know you wanted to be Superman, but your sister really wants us to dress up as a family. See?" I smile and hold the costume in my hands, shaking it from side to side, hoping to make it look enticing. "You get to be Po tonight."
Auden shakes his head. "No! Superman!"
I sigh. "Please, Auden, don't be difficult."
"Superman!" He begins to cry.
I kneel in front of him and gently wipe the tears from his chubby, pink cheeks. "Please, baby, be a good boy tonight."
"I want Superman." He sniffles.
"If you do this nice thing for your sister, I'll let you have a treat."
He immediately perks up. "Treat?"
"Yes, anything you want."
"A new car?"
I laugh at how adorable it sounds when Auden asks for a new car. Suddenly, I feel a little sad thinking about how fast he's growing up and how soon he really will be asking for a new car to drive. But for now, I'll let him have his new toy car he's been asking for. "Yes," I reply and poke his little button nose.
"Okay, Mama."
"There's my good boy." I smile and gently pinch his cheek before pulling him into a hug.
After helping Auden into his Teletubby costume, and giggling a little too much at his expense, I go to check on how Hardin's doing with his costume. I walk into the bedroom and immediately burst into laughter.
"I want a divorce," he says as he stands in front of me, looking absolutely ridiculous in his purple Teletubby costume.
"It's not... that bad," I say, trying to stifle my laughter.
"You'll be hearing from my attorney."
"Stop!" I giggle.
"You know, teenage Hardin would've beat the living daylights out of me right now."
"That might be true, but teenage Hardin wouldn't be blessed with a beautiful wife and two wonderful children."
"You're right, Theresa. Maybe I'll go tease my wonderful son and make myself feel better," he jokes.
"Don't you dare, mister!" I warn as I poke him in the chest. "It took me long enough to convince him to dress up in that costume. He so badly wanted to be Superman. I had to resort to bribery."
"Bribery? Why the hell didn't you try to bribe me?"
"And what would you have wanted?" I raise an eyebrow.
"Well..." He walks closer to me and gently runs his fingers up my arm.
"Hardin!" I begin to giggle uncontrollably. "I... I just can't take you seriously right now." I wipe a tear from my eye before picking up my costume and walking to the bathroom.
"I'm signing the divorce papers in the morning!" he shouts as I walk away.
After changing into my costume, I meet Hardin in the bedroom.
As I walk toward him, he looks me up and down with a smirk on his face. "Well, don't you look..."
I glare at him. "You better pick your next word very carefully, because if you don't, it's going to have a severe impact on your sex life."
"Green." He smirks.
I roll my eyes. "Beautiful would have been better."
"You are definitely the most beautiful out of all the green creatures in the world: Shrek, The Grinch, Swamp Thing..."
"You're an ass."
"I'm the Donkey to your Shrek." He smiles.
"You know, that might just be the most romantic thing you've said to me in the last six months."
"Only the best for you, my beautiful wife." Hardin comes up behind me and tries to wrap his arms around my waist, but our costumes are too bulky.
"Stop sucking up." I giggle. "We better get going." I walk over to the nightstand to grab my cell phone.
"Yeah, especially if that's as fast as you can waddle in that thing." He snickers.
"Hardin!"
"I'm only kidding, baby."
"Yeah, sure... You better keep this good mood going all night. Now, let's go, Tinky-Winky."
Hardin lets out a small laugh. "What the hell did you just call me?"
"Your name for the evening." I smirk.
"Tinky-Winky? Seriously? A purple Teletummy named Tinky-Winky? This just keeps getting better and better..."
"Teletubby, Hardin. Tubby!"
"Isn't that what I said?" he asks with a confused look on his face.
I giggle. "This is going to make for one interesting night." I pull him with me to meet the kids.
When we walk into the living room, Auden starts to giggle.
"What's so funny, little man?" Hardin asks with his hands on his hips while Auden continues to giggle. "Oh, you think this is funny?" he asks as he runs up to Auden and tickles him before lifting him into the air.
My heart swells as I watch the two most important boys in my life laughing and goofing around.
"Mom, what do you think?" Emery asks from beside me, dragging me from my thoughts.
"Turn around."
Emery twirls around in her yellow Teletubby costume.
"You look very adorable, Em. What about me? How does your mom look in green?"
She doesn't answer me and instead wraps her arms around me. "Thank you for dressing up, Mom," she mumbles into my costume. "You're the best mom ever!"
"I really am, aren't I?" I joke. "Make sure you say something nice to your brother and dad, too. They're doing this so you can have a good Halloween, Emery."
"I know, Mom." She smiles before walking over to Hardin and hugging him tightly.
"What do you want now, Daughter?" he jokes.
"To say thank you," she says as she squishes their costumes together.
"Me, too! Me, too!" Auden shouts as he jumps up and down in his little red Teletubby costume and tries to get in on the hugging, which might just be the most adorable thing I've ever seen in my entire life.
I feel like my heart is about to burst from witnessing such a heartwarming scene between my family. As I continue watching them, Hardin's emerald eyes meet my gaze and he gives me that big and bright smile that always makes his dimples pop. I can't help but still see that moody, leather jacket wearing boy who stole my heart all those years ago.
"Tess?" Hardin asks softly. "I think the kids are ready to go trick-or-treating," he says as they all walk toward the door.
"I'll be there in a minute." I sniffle. I quickly grab a tissue and wipe a loose tear from my eye before following my loving family out the door.
