"Uh, what are you doing here, Zander?" Soul asked.
"That's all you've got to say? No. Hi Zander, how have you been? Or I've missed you." Zander said, holding his arms out, snapping the girl out of her disbelief, causing her to let out a scoff.
"I thought it sounded very clear when you told me you never want to see me again." Soul said, crossing her arms. "It was one of the realest things you said to me."
"Ouch, that actually hurt my little heart." Zander said, jokingly placing his hand over his heart with a smile.
"Babe, you know Z?" EJ asks, wrapping around his girlfriend, looking down at her with a smile as he looks between her and his old camp friend.
"Babe?" Zander said, smirking, lifting an eyebrow.
"Yeah, he actually graduated from North High last year." Soul explained, looking up at EJ. "His family had just moved to town right after my dad died."
"Now love, if you're going to tell our story, you have to tell the entire thing." Zander said, smiling at the girl before looking over at the boy connected to her side. "I'm her ex boyfriend."
"Ex?" EJ, Soul and Ricky said at the same time, causing everyone to look over at the Bowen boy.
"Sorry." Ricky said, holding his hands up as he took a step back.
"If I remember correctly we were just friends." Soul said, pointing between the two. "At least that's what you told everyone when they asked."
"Come on, love. Everyone could tell we were more than just friends." Zander said, smirking down at the girl, causing her to roll her eyes.
"Well if you ask me." Soul said, moving out of EJ's arm, taking a step closer to the boy, looking him straight in the eyes. "I wish I would have kept walking the day we met." She made her way past him, bumping into his shoulder hard, quickly making her way out of the barn.
"She's just as delightful as I remember." Zander said, smirking at the group. "Well I must run..." quickly scanning his eyes over the group, stopping on the Bowen boy. "Ah, you must be Ricky? My sister, Lily, sends her deepest apologies."
Before anyone had a chance to say anything, the boy sent one last smirk, turning on his heels as he made his way out of the barn, whistling to For The First Time In Forever .
...
"Hey, hey, hey." Soul heard, causing her to slow down, letting the boy catch up to her as she looked over at him. "What was that back there?"
"I really don't want to talk about that right now." Soul said, looking forward.
"Okay." EJ said, nodding his head as the girl looped her arm through his as she laid her head on his arm. "Well you killed it today. I know you said you didn't want to be in any major roles but any role you get you're going to kill it."
"Thanks." Soul said, letting out a light chuckle. "Yeah, today... today was definitely an interesting audition day."
"Yeah. Val told me to act like I knew what I was doing, and clearly an accent can hide the fact that I'm totally and completely drowning here." EJ explained.
"I wouldn't say you're drowning. But maybe just no more acting." Soul said, looking up at the boy. "Just be yourself."
"Duh. I don't think anyone wants that." EJ said, causing them both to chuckle lightly.
"Hun, I highly doubt that." Soul said. "Besides, Miss Jenn's aren't built in a day. You'll be a great babe, you just have to believe in yourself. And you have help, right? You have Val."
"Yeah, Val's the best." EJ said, causing Soul to smile at him.
"She seems great." Soul said, causing the boy to nod. "But seriously E, if you're too stressed about directing this summer, I'm more than happy to help you with anything if you need it. Or if you need to take time from the time we had set to hang out that's totally fine too."
"Have I told you how great you are?" EJ said, stopping in front of the girl as he smiled down at her. "You and me, it's the only thing I'm not worried about this summer. But maybe it wouldn't be the worst idea to keep a professional distance at rehearsals. Wouldn't want the others getting the wrong idea."
"Yeah. Several feet apart. No hand holding." Soul said, grabbing both of the boy's hands as she smiled up at him. "Definitely no long and meaningful eye contact."
"You mean, like this?" EJ said, causing the couple to stare into each other's eyes for a few seconds.
"Definitely like that." Soul said, touching his cheek, letting out a laugh, grabbing his hand, walking away from the barn.
"Wanna take a swim?" EJ asks.
"I mean yeah." Soul said, looking over at the boy. "Why not."
"Beat you there." EJ said, looking over at the girl with a smirk.
"No you won't." Soul said, smirking, quickly taking off with the boy behind her.
...
Soul slowly made her way around the camp by herself as she took in nature and the fresh air.
Taking a seat on one of the benches that was placed in the middle of the trees and flowers.
Closing her eyes as she let out a deep breath, just listening to the sounds of the night.
Quickly opening her eyes as she felt something move on her nose.
"Well hello there." Soul said, slowly lifting her finger up to the blue butterfly, letting it move onto her finger. "You look just like the one... oh."
~ Flashback; 11 years ago ~
7 year old Soul was sitting in a chair in the corner of the garage, swinging her legs back and forth as she watched her dad work under the hood of a car.
"Daddy." Soul called, letting out a little giggle.
"Yeah, sweetheart." Dad said, looking over his shoulder, causing a grin to form. "Looks like you got a little visitor."
"It tickles." Soul said, letting out another giggle.
"He's just being friendly." He said, sticking his finger up slowly, letting the little insect crawl onto his finger. "See he's a nice guy."
"Woah." Soul said, sticking her finger out towards the blue butterfly. "Why is it letting you hold him?"
"Because sometimes butterflies are just a loved one coming to check up on you after going to heaven." He said, lightly putting his finger over hers, letting it crawl onto her finger.
"Like Grams?" Soul asked, looking up at her dad with a smile.
"Yeah, just like Grams." He said, nodding.
"Hi Grams!" Soul said, happily waving at the butterfly, causing it to flap its wings, causing her to notice the black mark. "Daddy you got something on her wing."
"She's okay." He said just as the butterfly quickly flew away.
...
"Grams?" Soul said, causing the butterfly to not move a muscle. "Dad?"
That caused the butterfly to quickly and rapidly move its wing, causing the girl to smile down at it.
The butterfly quickly moved to the seat of the bench, stopping on top of a carving that looked old.
"Huh." Soul said, running her hand over the carving that said, S heart E. "I guess this is you telling me you approve." The butterfly quickly flapped its wings, causing the girl to chuckle. "Thanks dad."
The butterfly quickly flew back onto the girl's nose for a few before quickly flying off.
After a few minutes of sitting alone, Soul decided to call it a night.
Tracing her hand over the carving one last time with a smile before quickly making her way back to the bunks.
Stepping into the room to see everyone doing their own thing to get ready for bed, Gina making her bed, Kourtney hanging up things on her bulletin board, Ashlyn brushing her teeth, while none of the other girl's are anywhere to be seen.
"Hey, there she is. I thought we'd have to send a search party." Gina said, jokingly, smiling at her best friend, noticing the smile on her face. "Everything okay?"
"I think I might be in love with EJ." Soul admits, causing their eyes to go wide as they look around at each other before looking back over at the girl.
"Woah." Ashlyn said, surprised.
"That's great!" Kourtney said, nodding her head. "Have you told him?"
"No, I just realized it after this moment I had with a butterfly." Soul said, causing them to lift their eyebrows. "Don't even ask."
"Well I'm happy for you, Soul." Gina said, wrapping her arms around her best friend, causing the other two to nod in agreement joining the hug.
"Yeah, we all are." Ashlyn said, smiling at the girl, causing a smile to grow from ear to ear.
"Thanks." Soul said, looking at all of them with a true smile. "I'm glad we are all here together."
...
After everyone finally began settling in for the night and changed into their pajamas and some laying in bed, Gina made her way from the bathroom.
"Hey, did Maddox ever come back after dinner?" Gina asked, placing her shower caddy on her bed, making her way over to the swing that sat between Soul and Kourtney's beds.
"She probably has some super-top-secret important camp tradition business to attend to." Kourtney said, messing with an orange butterfly pop-it.
"Is it bad to say she's kind of a lot?" Ashlyn asked. "And that's coming from me, someone who is also a lot."
"Come on guys, Maddie is a great person once you really get to know her!" Soul explained.
" Soul's right, she just wants everyone to bond and be friends and go along with her cool rituals." Gina said, causing Ashlyn and Kourtney to give each other a look.
"Mmm-hmm." Ashlyn and Kourtney hummed together.
"Guys, I promise she's harmless." Soul said, smiling at the group.
