⭒٭⭑ 08 Chapter 8

Fury smiled in delight as his team brought in Loki.

"Nice work!" he said, as they entered. Most of them merely nodded.

He watched as Stark, and Thor walked in behind them all. Gritting his teeth, he waited for the rude remarks and the childish jokes from the billionaire, but they never came.

He was too busy flirting with Potter to even acknowledge him, which was fine by him of course.

"You know, you're pretty in a way very few are. I'd love to see you without your clothes on," he said.

Rolling her eyes, Potter stayed quiet before snapping at him, "You know Stark I don't understand how you got your money. You're full of garbage right now."

Stark looked quite unabashed as he quickened his pace.

"Well, you're working with me, aren't you?" he asked.

"Wrong," she replied. "We're both working for S.H.I.E.L.D. and if you don't want to be missing a tooth, then you better stop flirting with me. besides don't you already have a girlfriend," she smirked.

Tony paled at the thought of Pepper seeing him now. He stopped flirting with her.

Steve walked straight into his bunk and freshened up. He hadn't forgotten about Sydney putting the whole mission on the line.

He couldn't understand why she would do it. He had just told her to stop him from giving the speech. Yes, he hadn't stopped it either, but he hadn't really acted rashly either.

With all this in mind he decided to talk to her.

He knocked on her door, and she opened it slightly, her wand in her hand. Was she expecting to be attacked?

"I want to know something," he started. She put down her wand and stepped out of her room.

She didn't answer him, but the two of them walked out.

When they were in one of the empty rooms, he began again.

"I wanted to know why you took on Loki alone," he said.

She gave him a weird look before answering. "You said to distract him, so I tried."

"I didn't mean to fight him!" Steve replied. His voice growing louder with every word.

"Well, you didn't exactly say how!" she retorted.

"I thought you knew what I meant!" Steve shouted. They were yelling now. Tony, who had been in one of the other rooms, heard them and hurried through the hallways desperate to hear what was happening.

He passed through the lab, where Bruce looked at him with confusion. Tony merely gestured for him to follow.

Natasha, being a spy, was already there, listening through the door.

"Well, I didn't!" Sydney was saying. "and for your information, I've been through so much worse than the God of Mischief!"

"That's the thing! I don't know what you've been through! How do I know I can trust you!"

"I'm sorry. Does Fury trust me? Yes. Does everyone else on this ship trust me? Yes. Then it's your problem if you don't trust me."

Natasha had to applaud her. She came up with retorts in such little time, and they were lethal.

"Well, I don't! there is nothing about you in the files except that you can do magic!"

"Let me ask you something. Do you go around parading the fact that you missed seventy years of your life? No right? Then why should I go around parading my personal life?" she knew she'd hit hard, but she didn't care. Rogers had gone too far.

"I don't go parading that around because everyone already knows!" Steve shouted, after a moment of silence.

Without skipping a beat, Sydney continued, "Well, news flash Rogers. You want to know what I've faced? Here you go. I fought the person that killed my parents hundreds of times before I was even seventeen, I fought a dragon when I was fourteen, fought merpeople when I was fourteen, a sixty-foot-long snake that can kill by looking at you when I was twelve, oh and how could I forget that I died and had to come back even though I didn't want to!"

Sydney couldn't help herself. Steve was being incredibly childish and didn't know anything. She thought that if she told him, he'd stop and leave her alone, but Steve's eyes showed anything but that.

She could see the surprise and shock in his eyes. There was a lot of concern and guilt and even a little something she couldn't quite place. It had been a while since she'd read someone.

After a few minutes of uncomfortable silence, Steve started to speak.

"Sydney, I – " he began, but Sydney stopped him.

"'I'm sorry?' I don't care. Also, one last question. Were you worried I'd get hurt, or were you afraid Loki would get away?" Sydney asked, but his expression made his answer clear before he said it.

She gave a cold harsh laugh and continued, "That's what I thought." And without a second glance, she walked out the door, not once caring for the people who had eavesdropped on them.
