TORCHWOOD WAS JASON NEWTON'S LIFE. Every morning, as the sun shone through his scratchy curtains and onto his sleep deprived face, he would wake up feeling purposeful and eager to start the day. He loved witnessing new and extraordinary things and he loved knowing that his work made a difference. That was why his teammates admired him so much, not just because he was brave and clever, which he was with no doubt, but because all he wanted to do was to protect the people who couldn't protect themselves.

Jack had kept a close eye on Jason from the moment he joined the team, he didn't know what it was about him, but from the second they met Jack knew he was different. He doubted that Jason had any idea of what he was, not that Jack knew anything either, but he was not going to rest until he found out.

Years past and Jack Harkness still didn't have the answers he desired, not knowing that the secrets behind his mysterious colleague lay hidden inside the fob watch he always wore on his person. And for Jason, the man who believed he knew his own life, his heart started to lead him to someone he had told himself never to fall for: Jack Harkness.

Each man both unknowingly had the other wrapped tightly around their finger. Jack wanted nothing more than to discover who Jason Newton really was, to see the truth behind his rather attractive colleague. And Jason, he just wanted to protect the world, to save it from alien threats, and falling for his boss did not fit in that category.

But they were both drawn to one another like a moth to flame. And there was nothing they could do expect surrender to the whim of the Universe and their hearts, because a storm was brewing and they will need each other if they wish to survive it.

The Ranger: The Ranger is a highly skilled and professional soldier with a slightly shaky moral compass. He knew the Doctor once, they were decent friends for a while before everything went to downhill. The Ranger fought in the time war brilliantly, he was one of their best fighters. That was until he realised how cruel the High Council was being and left, using the Chameleon arc on himself in order to hide which is why The Doctor never noticed him on Earth.

Jason Newton: Jason Newton is a kind and intelligent man but doesn't have any family. He lives in a small flat in Cardiff and works at a corner shop. That was until he spotted a Weevil on the run and instead of fleeing, he ran towards it. Jason was first on the scene and helped to capture the Weevil and instead of ret-conning him, Jack recruited him. Jason always carries around his "father's" watch despite it being broken, something that Jack doesn't notice until later. Jason is an excellent Torchwood Agent.

notes:

• Jack and Jason are a fast burn in this book, but they've known each other for a long time beforehand.

• Yes, Jason's a Time Lord from Gallifrey. He was fighting in the war when he realised how cruel the High Council had become so he used the chameleon arc and ran. He doesn't know he's a Time Lord until the very end of Season 1 when he opens the watch.

• Jason's Time Lord name is 'The Ranger' because he protects what he cares about with the upmost skill and determination.

• The reason the Doctor doesn't realise Jack is the Face of Boe is that Jason isn't there, he's dead. Sad, I know. The Face of Boe is billions of years old, not even a timelord can last that long and at the end Jason is on his 7th regeneration.

ACT ONE
torchwood season 1

• Jack is trying to figure out Jason's secret because he knows there's something about him, he just can't figure out what. As Jack tries to learn more, he gets closer to Jason and they both start to fall for each other. Jason discovers Jack's secret before Jack discovers his and accepts him for it. Jason gets a strange connection-like feeling from the hand in the jar, not knowing about it's owner. They have to at least kiss by the end of the act, maybe around half way through. They try and keep what they have casual, but the team easily spot it and totally ship it. During the 'End of Days' episode, Jason shows his skills by his knowledge of history and ancient languages. By now, Jack knows of the watch he carries and recognised the symbols, he just couldn't remember where from. At the end, he does and everything makes sense so he gets Jason to open the watch and the time energy is restored. However, before they can sort things out and explain, the Doctor arrives.

ACT TWO
doctor who season 3

• Both Jason and Jack hold onto the TARDIS and get dragged to the end of the Universe. This causes Jason to regenerate and The Doctor is shocked to find a Time Lord still alive. They reunite but the Doctor tells him of Gallifrey's fate which pains him. The Ranger still prefers to go by Jason or 'Ace' but only the Doctor and the Master call him 'Ranger'. Jason knows about the Master, they knew each other well back on Gallifrey, so he's really shocked when he's alive. Jason is kept with the Doctor during the year under the Master's control.

ACT THREE
torchwood season 2 + doctor who season 4 (this can be a separate act if you would like)

• The team are first confused by the appearance of the strange man (which hurts Jason) but both him and Jack try to explain that he's still Jason. It takes a while for them to fully accept it. Tosh just wants to ask Jason questions about his planet (which hurts) and Owen is more intrigued by Jason's alien physiology. Now both Jason and Jack have time when they can fully be themselves with each other, it's a romantic time for them both. Both Jack and Jason are really happy to see Martha again. But then Tosh and Owen die and he's heartbroken. You can make a whole new act for this if you want, but this is when the Earth and all the other planets are stolen. The Doctor and The Ranger reunite which angers Davros. And they save the planet together.

ACT FOUR
children of the earth

• Jason knows Jack's hiding something instantly but does not pressure him into saying what. They're not allowed to hurt Jason because he's a Time Lord and they would not like to be in the Doctor's warpath which is why they only put the bomb in Jack. Jason is so happy for Gwen when she tells them she's pregnant, like how a brother would feel when he finds out he's having a niece or nephew. Jason does not want to leave Jack to die, but Jack makes him leave. Jason and Ianto stick together. Jason dies in that room with Ianto but somehow manages to regenerate and survive. Jason hates what Jack does to his grandson in order to save all those children so Jason plugs himself in as well to try and balance out the power going into Steven. It works, but Steven goes into a coma. He leaves with Jack at the end.

ACT FIVE
miracle day

• Jason isn't technically immortal so Miracle Day does not affect him (not that he would like to find out). But it makes him really worried for Jack who's used to dying and coming back, he's afraid for him. Jason is now Jack's ultimate protector and sticks by his side no matter. Jason even tries to telepathically connect to the Doctor, but this field around the Earth that is changing everyone's physiology, is blocking the signal. At the end, everything is alright. They are confused by Rex surviving the bullet, but luckily, the immortality eventually fades.

ACT SIX
post-miracle day / au

• Jason and Jack leave to travel the stars but come back every now and again to help the Doctor out. By now they are like a married couple, so it will be hilarious to write about that. You can take this act as far as you want, it's really up to you.
