IF YOU WERE TO ASK ISABELLA Martinez how she would describe herself in three words, she would reply with 'I don't care'. That was in fact a lie because if anything, she cared too much. She cared for the people who were overlooked, she cared for the ones she loved most and she cared that Freeland was thriving with chaos. Isabella hated it. She hated being frightened every time she went outside, she hated that her Cop father was being blamed for not stopping the violence and she hated feeling helpless. But luckily, for both her and Freeland, she wasn't helpless for much longer.

After her parents fell victim to the violence and horror in her city, that tragic moment was what unlocked the power hidden deep inside her. Many children experienced similar surges of unknown power, but were quickly spirited away before anyone could notice or do anything about it. But they missed two and they were probably the most dangerous of them all. Fuelled by their anger and hatred for the people who ruined their lives, Jefferson Pierce and Isabella Martinez - who were good friends at the time - started their individual training, preparing themselves for what was to come.

Randy Barnes - a close friend of her parents - took her in after they died and he wasn't scared of her abilities like she had feared, instead he helped her to control them. He was the one that suggested training. He was the one who helped to build her suit. And he was the one that inspired the young, broken girl's love of machines. Or in other words, he was Isabella's guardian angel.

When Black Lightning came onto the scene, Isabella knew it was time to take up the fight and become the hero she was meant to be. Freeland named her 'Beacon', not just because of her astonishing ability to manipulate the light around her, but because she was also a beacon of hope for those frightened and victimised by the terrorising gangs that roamed their streets. Isabella had never been a big fan of team work, but when the opportunity arose to fight side by side with Black Lightning, she didn't turn it down. Together, they battled against the crime on their streets, creating a bond of trust and respect along the way.

Then something unexpected happened. Isabella became pregnant. As soon as the father found out, he abandoned them both, leaving Randy to care for his adopted daughter and the child she was carrying. The day Aurora was born was the best day of her life even though Randy almost had a heart attack the second her water broke all over the garage floor. Motherhood was not something she had planned, but it didn't take her long to figure it out and even she had to admit, she was darn good at it. Randy became the Male authority figure in Aurora's life and she looked up at him, seeing the man as her grandfather, which broke both his and Isabella's hearts at the mention of the man they had lost.

A few years after Aurora was born, Isabella quit being Beacon, because she grew up without parents and didn't want her daughter to end up the same. It was also around that time that Black Lightning disappeared from the streets, leaving Freeland without a hero to protect it.

Now, years later, Isabella works part time at Randy's garage and the rest as Garfield High's D&T teacher. It had been years since she had last put on the suit and she was determined to keep it that way. But when her daughter and Jennifer Pierce are held against their will at club 100, Beacon and Black Lightning save the day and are brought back out from the shadows. Then later, when the girls are kidnapped from their school, something happens that causes her secret to be exposed to the one person she hoped to never tell.

Black Lightning and Beacon were finally back on the crime ridden streets of Freeland, their partnership was reinstated, and even Isabella had to admit, he still looked pretty damn good in that suit.

Beacon: Not long after getting the vaccine, Isabella's parents were killed in a car jacking. This tragic event unlocked her powers and a huge wave of white light emitted from her. Randy took her in and helped her with her powers and was there to support her when she became 'Beacon'. She stopped being Beacon a few years after her daughter was born and doesn't put the suit back on until Aurora gets into trouble with Jennifer Pierce. Isabella can manipulate light, she can also bend it to make herself invisible.

Solar Flare: Aurora is taken from her school along with Jennifer and Anissa fo the Seahorse Motel. After being saved by Black Lightning and Beacon, she starts to burn up and Isabella quickly takes her daughter away from prying eyes were she explodes with golden light. Golden light, not white light like her Mother. Just before passing out, Aurora realises that Beacon is her Mother so Isabella tells her everything and she becomes Solar Flare. Her powers are similar to her Mother's, but she summons light instead of manipulating it.

notes:

• Isabella and Jefferson have none each other for a long time but they don't know about each other's secret identity even though they've fought side by side multiple times.

• After returning to their mantles as Freeland's heroes, Isabella starts to fall for Jefferson and vice versa.

• At the Seahorse Motel, they realise who each other are because they can both see the desperate look of a parent in their eyes.

• After getting her powers, Aurora has trouble controlling them so when she's in Anissa's class, her hands start to light up and she rushes to the bathroom. Anissa follows her to make sure she's alright and witnesses the golden light falling from the girl's hands and she admits to her that she also has newfound powers. Aurora and Anissa then work together to try and figure out their abilities.

• Isabella's Father was partners with Bill Henderson's father so the two have known each other for a very long time and he's Aurora's godfather.

• Jade Knight is Isabella's best friend and is an incredible biochemist so she helps out Lynn with the science stuff throughout the series. Jade is a proud lesbian and likes to playfully flirt with Isabella.

• Randy Barnes was good friends with Isabella's parents so he took her in when they died. He owns a garage and is incredibly good with tech which is why he's the one who made both hers and Aurora's suits. Randy loves his girls and is always there for them. He's their Peter Gambi.

• Isabella and Lynn are on good terms because she's over Jefferson but still wants him to be happy. Lynn also loves how much Isabella protects her girls. Sometimes it can be a bit awkward, especially for Jefferson, but Lynn and Isabella are friends at the end of the day.

ACT ONE
black lightning season 1

• Isabella returns from the Garfield High fundraiser to find Aurora not there and then she gets a text saying 'Salsa on Sundays' which is their code for SOS. Beacon and Black Lightning come to save them. On the day when Isabella is teaching, her daughter, Anissa and Jennifer get taken from right in front of them and they go to save them. Aurora gets her powers and works with Anissa after she finds out about hers. By the end of act, Jefferson and Isabella are together.

ACT TWO
black lightning season 2

• Jennifer and Anissa are hesitant at first when Isabella and Aurora move in but quickly accept them into their family. The girls look up to Isabella like a second mother and Aurora as if she were their sister. Aurora helps Anissa out with BlackBird and they have Randy Barnes and Peter Gambi on their sides. Randy also 'dies' the same time as Gambi because he's in the car when the men attack.

ACT THREE
black lightning season 3

• Isabella is locked up along with Jefferson whilst Aurora and Randy are helping BlackBird and Gambi save the metas. Jade is with Lynn, but doesn't realises Lynn's drug problem until it's too late. Isabella wants to do what's right for the people of Freeland but she also wants to protect her family so she complies to the ASA's instructions. Gravedigger is not the only original meta because there is a woman called 'Reaper' who can manipulate blood, she's Isabella's grandmother. Jade is kidnapped along with Lynn. When Bill dies, Isabella and Aurora are broken. Jefferson and Isabella fight Gravedigger and Reaper with the help of their daughters. In the end the ASA is disbanded and the superhero team walks away together as a family, ready for the next fight.

ACT FOUR
black lightning season 4
