Aside from the the first few chapters, chronology doesn't particularly matter. They can be older or younger than they are now. Every chapter is stand-alone.

{THIRD PERSON POV}
"Hey Mama," Luka snuggled into his mother's side. She'd just finished reading him a bedtime story about a princess who ran away from home and met a dragon. "Can you tell me a new story?"

"Of course. What would you like to hear?"

"How'd you find out you were pregnant with me?" Luka asked, eyes sparkling.

Lucy barked a laugh. "Oh my. That's a long story."

"I wanna hear it!"

Lucy looked into Luka's huge, curious, puppy-dog pleading eyes. She couldn't say no, being almost as weak to Luka's eyes as she was to Natsu's.

She kissed his forehead. "Alright."

*flashback—seven and a half years prior*
"Wow!" Levy looked up at the rows and rows of millions of books in awe. This was the national library, home to a copy of every published book in Fiore, and it was Levy's personal heaven.

"Come on, Levy-chan, you mustn't get distracted. We have to keep an eye out for the Arsonist." Lucy reminded her gently.

"I know!" Determined light shone in Levy's eyes. "He dares to go around burning down libraries? I'm going to bring this Arsonist to justice! Still, it's nice just having us two on a quest, Lu-chan."

"I know. You've been so busy with Emma lately, and Natsu usually tags along with me." Lucy looked a little depressed as she mentioned her partner. Levy wanted to cheer her friend up.

"Hey, no need to be down! Natsu was requested for that monster subjugation with Erza and Gray, right? He'll beat up those monsters and finish in no time. The Arsonist's note said he would come at 10 p.m. tonight. You'll probably see each other tomorrow!"

"Yeah..." Lucy said dourly.

"Hey." Levy raised an eyebrow. "I left Emma home alone with Gajeel to spend time with you and catch this creep. The last time I did that, he gave her a mohawk, eyebrow piercing, and nose ring. My daughter is three and looks like a delinquent."

Lucy laughed, her mood picking up. "I was wondering what happened!"

"I go through iron cravings for nine months and Emma's a complete daddy's girl!" Levy threw her arms up in exasperation.

Lucy giggled. Then she froze. "Do you smell that?"

"What?" Levy sniffed the air. "I don't smell anything out of the ordinary."

"Smoke!" Lucy gasped, chasing the scent. They found a man dressed all in black, holding a match to a book. He saw them and made a break for it.

Levy ran forward. "I'll catch him! Book-burning bastard! Put out that fire before it spreads, Lu-chan!"

"How?" Lucy cried, but Levy had already disappeared after the Arsonist.

She looked at the book in desperation. There was no water around. What would Natsu do?

Stupid question. Natsu would chow down. Lucy looked at the flames. Hmmm...

She subconsciously opened her mouth and bit down. The flames tingled on her tongue, but they tasted good. She ate until her belly felt warm and full.

Then Lucy came to her senses. "What am I doing?"

She remembered what Levy said about iron cravings. And she also remembered the night she and Natsu broke all physical barriers between them. It was a one time thing thanks to a little bit of alcohol. Neither one of them spoke about it since. Quite frankly, Lucy wasn't sure Natsu remembered.

But Lucy did, and it brought heat to her cheeks. She'd been in love with her best friend for a long time. The thought that, even while inebriated, Natsu might look at her in that way made Lucy's pulse sputter.

She pursed her lips, and moved her hands to her belly. Could it be?

Levy came running back. "I caught him! Do you need any help?"

"No." Lucy said weakly.

Levy caught sight of her friend's pale face. "Lu-chan? What happened?"

"I ate it."

Levy immediately understood. Her eyes widened. She reached forward...

...and pulled Lucy's mouth open wide. "Are you an idiot? You can't digest fire like Natsu can! Spit it out, spit it out!"

Lucy burped smoke.

"Oh dear." Levy sighed.

Fire alarms began ringing. Lucy looked at Levy. "Levy-chan, when you caught the Arsonist, you did turn him in before you came back, right?"

Levy's face twisted, giving Lucy her answer. "I was worried about the book."

"Did you tie him up?"

"Of course. With rope—oh. Rope, fire. Damn it."

Hatches in the ceiling open up and there's a hissing sound like gas.

"What's that?" Lucy asked.

"It's nitrogen!" Levy said excitedly. "I'm so glad they took me up on my suggestion!"

"How's nitrogen supposed to help us?"

"I'm so glad you asked!" Levy grins. "If there was a water-based sprinkler system, the books would get damaged. But there are three parts necessary to make a fire: heat, fuel, and oxygen. By replacing all the oxygen in the room with nitrogen, a gas that isn't flammable, the fire can be suppressed without damaging any books!"

"And if any people happen to be inside?"

"Naturally, they'll suffocate without oxygen and die."

"In how long?"

"A couple minutes? The system works quickly. I'm thinking of installing one in my home library." Levy's mouth formed a round O as she realized. "We have to get out of here!"

The two girls ran for the nearest exit, only to find it blocked by a man dressed all in black.

"Later losers." He mock-saluted and slammed the door behind himself. There was a click of a lock.

"The nerve!" Lucy shrieked.

"Not now, Lu-chan!" Levy cried, pulling the celestial spirit mage away from where she pounded on the bolted door.

They paced around, looking for another exit. Soon the air became too thin. Levy found an oxygen meter on the wall. Less than 10% of the oxygen in the library was left.

"The vents." Lucy managed. It was getting hard to breathe. The two wizards pulled off the metal grate and climbed into the air system.

Levy took the lead and managed to lead them through the network of air ducts to the outside. Both girls gasped for oxygen.

The girls ran around to the front of the library and stopped short. The Arsonist was caught leaving the library by the knights who asked them to flush him out. They'd completed their job.

"Serves him right! No mercy for people who burn books!" Levy huffed indignantly.
*flashback ends*

"And then, and then?" Luka asked excitedly.

"Well, I had to find a way to tell your Papa he was gonna be a papa." Lucy laughed. "My birthday came around and the problem solved itself!"

"What happened?" Luka bounced up and down, sleep being the last thing on his mind. Lucy pulled him down and tucked him back in.

She grinned. "I went to blow out the fire from my candles and ate it instead. Everyone's eyes bugged out of their heads!"

Luka pictured it for a moment then burst out laughing. "Papa's so silly!"

"He is, isn't he?" Lucy chuckled.

"I heard that!" Natsu yelled from the other bedroom. Luka and Lucy grinned at each other, sniggering.

"Hey Luka, want to know a secret even Papa doesn't know yet?" Lucy asked.

"What?" Luka leaned forward.

Lucy leaned over and whispered in her son's ear. He furrowed his eyebrows and lit one of his hands on fire. "Like this?"

Lucy bent over and took a bite out of the flames flickering on Luka's hand. He gaped, and his eyes bugged out of his head.

"Shhhhhh." Lucy pressed a finger to her lips.

After a moment, Luka's eyes drooped. She kissed her son goodnight on the forehead. Lucy left his room, turned out the light, and walked down the hallway to the master bedroom.

Natsu was waiting for her on the bed. She washed up and brushed her teeth, then slid in next to him.

He looked displeased. "What don't I know yet?"

Lucy smirked. "Not telling."

"Come on, Luce!" Natsu whined. "Let me in on the secret! What did you do?"

"I'll tell you next week."

"Isn't your birthday next week?"
