You're One Of A Kind, Rose

{THIRD PERSON POV}
Rose and Mary Scarlet-Fernandes were two of a kind. It was a fact of life for them at this point.

They were identical twins after all. When they were born, Erza painted their toenails just to help keep track of which girl was which: Rose was maroon while Mary was indigo.

Now that they were older, the twins made sure they could be told apart: Rose wore maroon clothes while Mary wore indigo; Rose practiced The Knight while Mary practiced Heavenly Body magic; Rose styled her red hair in a side braid to the right while Mary styled her hair in a side braid to the left.

But Rose and Mary didn't consider themselves unique. More like they couldn't. The twins had always been two of a kind.

In fact, at least one day a month the twins collaborated with each other to dress and act like the other. Mary enjoyed it. She made it a game, seeing how long they lasted before their guild mates noticed.

Some days, nobody ever did.

Mary found the whole thing hilarious. But to Rose, that was the saddest part of all.

This was one of those days. Rose dressed in indigo from Mary's closet, since they were the same size. She styled her hair in a side braid to the left.

Mary dressed in maroon from Rose's closet, and styled her hair in a side braid to the right.

The twins bounded down the stairs to the kitchen, where Erza set the table while Jellal cooked breakfast at the stove. Their dad wore an apron than said 'Kiss the Cook' in cursive, so Rose and Mary obliged.

"Good morning Dad." Mary said to Jellal. Rose trotted over to help Erza with the place settings.

"Good morning Rose." Jellal said to Mary, mussing up her scarlet hair. Mary snickered under her breath.

"Good morning Mary." Erza said to Rose with a wide smile as she watched her daughter approach. Rose felt a pang in her heart.

"It's a morning." Rose agreed. The twins risked an all-clear glance at each other. Mary winked.

"A great morning." Mary amended, chuckling. "Come on Mary, let's go see if we can get a local job today. I don't feel like traveling."

Mary actually just wanted to see how many people in Magnolia they could trick with their disguises. Rose sighed, but she was acting as Mary and Mary never backed down from a job.

So Rose pounded her fists together. "I'm in!"

When they arrived at the guildhall, everyone greeted them by the wrong name. Not a single person realized that Rose was Mary and vice versa. Mary—disguised as Rose—picked out three local jobs.

Two were finding a lost pet, a cat and a dog, and the last one was fixing a leaking faucet.

They went to the leaky faucet house first. In reality, Mary was the one fixing it, while Rose handed her sister the right tools.

"Wow Rose-chan." The owner of the house said to Mary's legs, watching her work away under the sink in wonder. "No offense, but I thought Mary-chan would be better with tools than you."

"None taken." Rose replied for her sister. Why would she take offense? He was right.

"Wrench." Mary demanded, sticking out a hand. Rose quickly gave it to her.

The job was complete in under 20 minutes, and they set off, searching for the missing animals. They had pictures, names, and the location from where each pet went missing.

The dog, Mars, was a big black lab who jumped his yard's fence in a residential area near Freesia Park.

The cat, Juniper, was a tortoiseshell who escaped from an apartment near Kardia Cathedral after the owner left the door open when leaving for work.

Rose and Mary decided to split up. Mary would search the back alleys of Magnolia for Juniper, while Rose would look around Freesia Park for Mars. They'd meet up in four hours at Kardia Cathedral.

"It's a race!" Mary exclaimed. She liked making a game out of everything.

Rose made Mars' house the center of her search and circled out from there. She went around calling for Mars, stopping everyone she came across and showing them Mars' picture.

Most knew of the dog, but hadn't seen him since yesterday when he disappeared. Rose thanked them for helping and moved on.

"You're welcome, Mary-chan." Everyone who knew of the redhead twins responded. Rose just smiled and waved at everybody as they went their separate ways, like she knew Mary would.

As Rose approached Freesia Park, she heard kids laughing and a dog barking. Of course!

Mars' family said that he was a very social dog who loved attention. Rose knew that Luka and Sylvia had a group of friends that always hung out around Freesia Park. She and Mary had even been introduced to Ian, the impromptu leader of the gang.

Rose ran towards the park and was greeted by the sight of a cheerful black lab jumping around and playing with a group of twenty to thirty kids around her age and younger.

"Mars!" Rose whistled. Mars' ears perked up at the sound of his own name.

Mars bounded towards Rose, ears flopping, tongue lolling, tail wagging furiously.

"Good boy!" Rose gave the dog head scritches and confirmed his identity with the picture and the bone-shaped tag on his collar.

Then she hooked Mars to his leash. Several of the kids complained and made noises of protest, but Ian held them back long enough for Rose to properly explain the situation.

"I'm sure Mars and his owners would be super duper happy if you came by to play later. But they're really worried about Mars now. I think he's ready to go home." Rose bent down and patted Mars' flank. "Aren't you, bud?"

Mars barked. Rose took it as confirmation.

She lead him back to his house. As soon as they turned onto his street, Mars perked up and started sniffing wildly. As soon as his house was in view, Mars just about yanked Rose's arm out of its socket.

She was forced to let go of the leash and watch Mars streak up to the door, barking loudly. The door opened and Rose witnessed the tearful (slobbery) reunion between pet and family.

After retrieving her reward, Rose began to walk towards Kardia Cathedral to rendezvous with Mary.

When Mary arrived, thirty minutes late, she was spitting mad and covered in claw and bite marks from angry feral alley cats. Apparently Juniper the cat was much harder to catch than Mars the dog.

On the way back to the guild hall, Rose split up with Mary and passed by Freesia Park to update Ian and his group about Mars.

"Thanks Rose." Ian told her.

Rose thought nothing of it. She turned in the direction of the guild, walked ten paces, and froze.

She was disguised as Mary.

Ian wasn't supposed to know she was Rose, because they were interchangeable. Two of a kind.

Not even their parents knew that they did this once, twice, thrice a month.

I'm making too big of a deal of this, Rose decided. Ian had only met them once after all. He probably forgot that Mary was the twin who wore indigo, not Rose. An honest mistake.

Rose continued walking with a huge smile on her face. For the first time in a long while, she felt recognized. Unique. Special.

It was a good morning after all.
