nine; the invitation
Lennie Nelson was stood outside the door of Parker Hansons apartment, her palms sweating as she bit at her lip nervously. She was going to have to put on the act of a life time so that Parker wouldn't see through her nervousness, so she wouldn't be able to tell that something was up. All she had to do was convince her to go out tonight. And yet as she stared at the wooden door, she started to doubt her abilities to do so.
In all actuality, Lennie knew this was a terrible idea. Any idea that Chase Stokes came up with was stupid, but this one was a whole new level of stupid. It was the dumbest shit ever. Not only was it completely overstepping any type of boundary, but there was no way it was going to go well or the way they wanted. Not with Parker. Never with Parker.
Lennie finally worked up the rest of her courage, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes. She ran a hand through her hair, opening her eyes as she lifting the house key towards the door. She inserted the key, calming her nerves as best as she could as she pushed the door open. She was immediately met with the sound of a machine whirring, her eyebrows furrowing as she closed the door behind her. She immediately followed the noise, trying to find out where it was coming from and what it was. She entered the guest bedroom, her eyes widening as she saw Parker doing something she hardly ever say her do. She was working out.
Lennie could hear the screaming coming from the girls headphones, Parker sweating profusely as she ran, her eyes glued to the screen on the treadmill. She did a double take when she saw Lennie, sending her a head nod as she pressed a button on the treadmill. It soon slowed to a stop, Lennie staring curiously at Parker who was drinking some water, her face glistening as she pulled her headphones out.
"Hey Len. Whats up?" Parker asked nonchalantly, as if she hadn't been doing the thing that she hated most in the world 5 seconds ago. Running was Parkers least favorite thing to do, and she had made a point to never do it willingly.
"Nothing...you feeling okay?" Lennie asked, gesturing towards the girl with a confused look still on her face. Parker nodded, taking a sip of water and wiping her face with a towel.
"I'm fantastic. Why do you ask?" Parker shrugged, dropping the towel onto the treadmills handle and pushing past Lennie. The girl followed, shaking her head as she spoke again, clearly realizing that she was acting weird. Parker headed immediately for the fridge, pulling it open and grabbing a head of lettuce from inside. She pulled a piece of lettuce off, Lennie scrunching her nose up as she watched her bite the lettuce.
"Because you're acting like a rabbit. And you hate running. What's all this about?" Lennie asked with concern, pulling the lettuce from the girls hand and shaking her head. Parker just shrugged again, her face beginning to turn red as she tried to find a way to explain herself.
"I'm just...exploring a new lifestyle." Parker said, looking past Lennie and to the room where the treadmill was. Lennie soon realized what she was here for, looking down at her hands and trying to determine whether she should dwell on this sudden change or if she should just move on. Parker seemed to be struggling with something, she had a thing where when she was stressed, she would do things to keep herself insanely busy. So as Lennie watch her begin to do dishes, she realized this was in fact the case. An idea struck her, the girl stepping in between Parker and the sink and grabbing her shoulders.
"You're clearly stressed and upset. I have a perfect idea." Lennie threw out the line, waiting for Parker to become curious and ask her what her idea was. Parker was quick to bite, her eyebrow quirking as she opened her mouth to speak.
"Whats your idea?" The possibility of busying herself with something Lennie wanted to do was too alluring, knowing that she'd do anything to get her mind off of the dinner she had had with her colleague. She had been given an amazing job offer, she just wasn't sure if she could commit to it just yet, the impending decision had been driving her up the wall.
"How about a night out? Go to the club, party a bit." Lennie gave a half smile, quickly opening her mouth again to finish. "Get drunk." She desperately hoped that this would work, and when she saw the enthusiastic look that etched itself onto her face, she realized maybe it wouldn't be as hard as she thought it would.
"I would love to get drunk. Oh my God we have to go! Yes Len! Amazing idea." Parker said, already rushing past her friend. Lennie was slightly taken aback by how easy it was to get the girl on board considering Parker wasn't too much of a party person. But the allure of getting drunk and forgetting all her troubles for a night was beyond enticing, so Parker headed to her closet. There was many things she didn't want to remember. One of them was her life-changing career opportunity, a chance of a life time. Another was how not over her ex she was. She felt a pang of fear run through her, wondering if for some reason Drew would be at wherever they were going. But she quickly pushed her irrational fear away, knowing that the chances of that were far too slim.
Lennie appeared in the doorway of Parkers bedroom, leaning against the door frame as she searched through her closet. She felt a twinge of guilt run through her, knowing that she was looking forwards to this night and hoping that the plan would't ruin it. What she truly wanted was for them to get over each other, or at least Parker get over Drew, and in order to do that they needed to talk. Rushing them into it and making it happen was a bit juvenile, but Chase had made a point...their once big friend group had been split down the middle, and Lennie knew that the two of them making up was essential. She assumed that for the good of the group, she would push Drew and Parker into the same setting, and help them fix things.
The next hour or so was spent with Lennie and Parker diving through the closet to get clothes, getting dressed and doing their makeup and hair.
"Damn Ms. Nelson...you clean up pretty well." Parker said, earning a smile from her best friend. Lennie grabbed her phone as Parker headed for the door, opening it and going straight to Chase Stokes' contact.
Chase Stokes
we r leaving
see u there
Lennie closed her phone, a nervous smile crossing her lips as Parker held the door open for her, the Hanson girl holding her car keys in between her fingers. Lennie felt a pit drop in her stomach at the look on Parkers face, but she pushed those thoughts aside. This was good for her.
"You ready?"
