Hangul is phonetic, so each character only has one sound, with a few exceptions.

There are 40 characters.

It works very similarly to the English alphabet and is no where near as complicated as Hanzi (the Chinese writing system).

Hangul is pretty much mandatory to learn before learning the Korean language.
