Chapter 11
Lilian Carson POV
I jumped out of the car as soon as we reached Agnor's residence and hurried for the door. I frantically knock on the door, hoping someone will answer and save me from the demons of my past. I could feel the beating of my heart in my throat, and I couldn't get rid of the feeling that someone or something was following me. I rushed inside as soon as the door opened and saw a familiar face, Hannah. She appeared concerned when she noticed that I was starting to pant and gasp for air.
"Miss, are you okay?"
"I'm good, just a little worn out. I'm going to go rest in my room."
"If you need anything, let me know; I'll bring you some water or a snack. Get some rest and take your time." With a warm smile, Hannah said. I smile back grudgingly and proceed to my room.
The atmosphere in the room was oppressive and gloomy. I was afraid that the nightmare would follow me into my room, slink around the corner, and keep watch over me while feeding off my hopelessness. I turned on the lights in the hopes that the brightness would chase away the feeling and help me get rid of it. The light was on, but I couldn't get rid of the feeling that I was being watched.
I tried to fall asleep after collapsing on the bed. I've read that getting some sleep can help you relax. However, it was hard to fall asleep because my mind was whirling with worries. To help me fall asleep, I made the decision to try some relaxation methods like deep breathing and visualization. My eyelid grew heavy, and I soon fell asleep.
I would only sleep for a short while before feeling as though I was breathing for the first time and that my body was lacking in oxygen when I awoke. I had disregarded the possibility of taking medications and assumed that you could not die of insomnia. The truth is, you can actually pass away, and sometimes I wish I was.
I must have woken up four times in the three hours that I've been in bed. Not for very long, but long enough to disrupt my restful sleep. There is a new nightmare for every disturbance. Although I wanted to drink coffee, caffeine makes me feel more anxious.
Even with the air conditioner on, my stomach began to churn, and I started to sweat profusely. I need to speak with someone. I wanted to hurt myself. I have to stop thinking about Jax's face. As tears started to form in my eyes, I scrambled to find Sam's phone number. I'd feel better if Sam and I could talk. I want to be in his arms right now. I want to tell him how much he means to me and how much I miss him.
I was going to dial Sam's number when I recalled his breakup proposal to me. I realised we were no longer together when reality set in. For a brief moment, I debated whether or not to call him. But after deciding against it, I put my phone back because I had to let him go.
The psychologist was correct! Sam was indeed used by me for personal gain, and the only time I needed him was when I felt exposed. He is not deserving of me. The beloved number, which I had once held so dear to me, was deleted. I chuckled to myself as I considered my predicament. My only real option in life is Alexander, and he is the one who now truly deserves me. Like Sam, I should use him until he grows tired of me and walks away.
I abruptly heard shouting and laughter coming from downstairs, followed by a loud noise. I was unsure whether I should look into the disturbance or keep thinking, so I paused for a moment. But my insatiable curiosity won out, and I made the decision to investigate what was happening. I descended the stairs with caution.
I could see a white light coming from under the door as I descended the stairs. I cautiously opened it to see a crowd gathered around a puzzling object on the floor as my heart was pounding. It appears that the object is a golden feng shui cat. Alexander appears to be joining the group in their laughter. In Chinese culture, feng shui cats are thought to bring luck and fortune. Alexander appears to be negotiating a business deal with the group based on his behaviour. He has never appeared this much happier to me.
One of the guys caught my eye; he had a graceful demeanour. His short, black hair that was spikey and had an Asian appearance, along with his slit-like, monolid eyes, appeared to indicate some sort of innate intuition. His Seoul accent sounded upbeat. I have heard a Seoul accent before from my dad's 'friend'. She was too close to him.
'Why would Alexander agree to a deal for a cat?' I puzzledly asked myself.
There has to be more to it than meets the eye. Perhaps it's more than just a feng shui cat; it must contain something valuable. The cat could be a rare antique or have sentimental value. Perhaps I should leave for the time being. As I took a step back, I knocked over a vase on the table, causing it to shatter into a million pieces on the floor. I froze, not knowing what to do next.
Shit! I'm sure they heard me. I sprinted up the stairs and into my room. After closing the door, I exhaled with relief. As I became aware of how close I had come to being discovered, I could hear my heart pounding in my chest. I couldn't help but wonder if anyone had seen me as I sat down on my bed.
I should divert my mind and maybe watch a movie. I took out my phone and scrolled through the list of recommended movies on my streaming platform, hoping to find something that would capture my interest and distract me from my thoughts. As I read through the descriptions, one title caught my eye, and I pressed play, settling in for a much-needed escape.
My heart rate spiked as I heard a knock on my door. I hesitated for a time, wondering whether or not to respond, but eventually chose to tackle the situation. Before going to the door, I paused the video. I carefully pushed open the door, revealing Hannah on the other side. She bent gently and smiled at me.
"Sir Alexander has summoned you, Miss. He ordered you to meet him right away," Hannah stated politely. She walked away, leaving me terrified and with millions of questions. I made a fist with my hands. I wish I could vent my frustration on someone.
I quickly gathered my thoughts and made my way to Alexander's room, trying to calm my nerves and prepare myself for whatever news or task he had for me. As I walked, I couldn't help but wonder what could be so urgent that he needed to see me immediately. Did he see me snooping? That must be it. I could lie if he asks, but he'll most likely punish me. My feet tremble just at the thought of Alexander.
I take a deep breath as I carefully make my way to his door and tell myself that I can handle whatever comes my way. I extend my hand to the door and knock steadily.
"Get in!" I heard from the other side. I twist the doorknob and push the door open, revealing a dimly lit room. As I step inside, I see a figure sitting in the corner, beckoning me to come closer. As I approached Alexander, I could make out a bottle of whisky and a pungent smell. He looks up at me with bloodshot eyes and a crooked smile, offering me a swig from the bottle. I hesitate for a moment, wondering what kind of trouble I've stumbled into. I hope he is not drunk.
"Why did you call me here?" I inquired confidently. I knew I had to be brave and face my fear, but his piercing gaze made it difficult to keep my cool. Taking a deep breath, I mustered the courage to maintain my gaze on him and wait for his response.
"Did you have a good time in college?" He inquired menacingly. I'm uneasy because of the tone of his question. I agree with a nod of my head. He didn't appear pleased with my gesture. I'm not sure if he expected me to say anything.
"The guards said you left the college quickly and appeared to be scared for your life."
Alexander made a low-pitched statement. This is what I expected to happen. The guards were obviously glaring at me and even questioned me about my health. They tell Alexander about my condition without even delaying for a second. Technically speaking, that is their job.
I sighed and said, "It was nothing important."
Slowly rising from the chair, he approaches me. I noticed a worried expression on his face as he got closer and considered whether or not I should be honest with him about what was bothering me. My mind suddenly flashed a picture. I observed Alexander laughing over Jax's lifeless body while he was covered in blood.
I quickly pushed the idea from my mind. I'm keeping my secret about Jax and my past from Alexander out of concern that he'll kill Jax. It's best to keep it a secret to stay out of trouble.
"You are aware of how much I detest you for constantly prying." With a serious expression on his face, he said, "Maybe I should teach you a lesson."
My eyes widened as I froze in fear. He did call to warn me—or possibly something worse.
Then he started laughing and said, "I'm joking, so calm down. You ought to have seen the expression on your face!"
I tried to smile as my lips curled up, feeling relieved. I didn't expect him to crack a joke with such a solemn expression. He seems to be in a good mood after that deal he made. Maybe he won't hurt me for now. I tried to relax and evaluate the situation. I couldn't let down my guard just yet because I didn't trust him.
Alexander approached me and stroked my cheek. I took a step back, unsure what to do. His touch was gentle, but I couldn't ignore the warning signs that told me to avoid him.
"Let me show you something. It's only for you."
I confusedly stare at Alexander. His eyes had a sense of mischief. I couldn't help but wonder what he was up to. His playful gaze made me feel like he was planning something unexpected.
"What do you mean?" I inquired of him, feeling a knot form in my stomach.
"It's a surprise! Now, shut your eyes," he said in a commanding manner. I remained there, my eyes fixed on his face, wondering what it might be. Without a doubt, I didn't want to close my eyes in Alexander's presence. I had a hard time interpreting Alexander's thoughts because of how expressionless his face was. I inhaled deeply and made an effort to keep my composure as I waited for him to speak.
"Come on, act enthusiastic; it's fun."
As he attempted to convince me, Alexander had a wide grin on his face.
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to expect, but eventually closed my eyes and waited for the surprise. As I stood there in the darkness, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease wash over me. I believe I just overstepped. The fact that I can't trust Alexander has been made abundantly clear by him. And yet, here I am, awaiting my end.
As he wrapped my fingers around his, I felt his hand. In contrast to my cold and rough hand, his warm hand was soothing. His gentle demeanour conflicted me; I couldn't help but wonder if he was sincere or if he had other goals in mind. However, I ponder whether his amiable nature is a result of whisky consumption.
A sharp tap on the shoulder startled me, and I felt his mouth close to my ear as he whispered. "Just relax and follow my lead."
He tightly gripped my hand and led me carefully down the hallway's steps. My anxiety subsided as I followed his assured lead. Since I really don't want to confront Alexander's monstrous side, I resisted the strong urge to look; I refused to open my eyes and see. I was aware of his unpredictable temper, and I didn't want to take a chance by doing something that might annoy him. Instead, I concentrated on controlling my breathing and reducing my nervousness in the hopes that he wouldn't notice my discomfort.
A door creaked open, and I felt the wind blowing in my face. I could feel my body trembling due to the extreme cold. Is this outside? Why he took me outside on such a chilly night intrigues me. We proceeded a short distance before stopping. I experienced nausea as well as stomach churning anxiety. Something is strange.
Alexander said, "Open your eyes, baby," in a seductive tone.
I slowly opened my eyes, but instead of seeing Alexander, my gaze was drawn to the massive swimming pool, which glistened in the moonlight. As I realised Alexander's evil motives, my heart skipped a beat.
My suspicions were confirmed. With adrenaline coursing through my veins, I try to act fast, but fear overwhelms me too quickly. I couldn't move as I locked my gaze on Alexander, who was wearing a devilish grin.
"Please..."
Two strong hands grabbed me and pushed me into the deep water before I could finish my sentence. I tried to grab onto something to keep me afloat as I felt my body becoming more floppy. I struggled to surface as the cold water rushed over my head and gasped for air. I was terrified of large bodies of water, and I had no swimming skills.
"Please help me, I beg—" As I struggled to breathe, I managed to make out some words. Alexander had bloodshot eyes and an evil grin on his face, as if he were amused by my helplessness or the fact that I was pleading with him for assistance. As fear gripped me, I frantically searched for any possible way out. My vision began to blur as I realised it was too late. I was tired, and my mind told me to drown. I couldn't stand it any longer.
"Save!" I couldn't finish the sentence and could feel myself sinking deeper and deeper into the cold water. This is how I die!
I closed my eyes and felt a jolt and a sudden splash of water. Someone was pulling me out of the water and bringing me to their chest. I coughed up some water and promptly passed out. Becoming a prisoner of oblivion.
