twelve (lisanna) + backstory

in my opinion, lisanna is one of the most underappreciated characters of my story the black angel, mainly because we don't know much about her. so, in order to give her the recognition she deserves, i thought i would fill you all in on the backstory, which i'll put in this chapter below the drawing if you'd like to give it a read.

as you (may) know from the black angel, twelve supposedly died on the evening on her twelfth birthday from a heart malfunction. her only companion, thirteen (natsu), believed her to be dead and escaped the laboratory they grew up in together, thinking "i'll come back for you, lisanna," though it was an empty promise.

after her heart healed, twelve was no longer needed for general experimentation and was sent to combat training. she was shipped off to america to a facility where she was trained to be an expert assassin and fighter.

when asked her name, she gave the answer lisanna.

the training was heartless and never-ending, with the ruthless operators ingraining into lisanna's mind things like "the mission is not over until you've succeeded or died" and "you will continue to fight until someone falls". lisanna learned to live on 3 hours of sleep a night, one meal a day, and with heavy athletic and combat training (she quickly became a master of swords, knives, guns, archery, staffs, and any other weapon you can think of). she wore a tracker on her boot, one that was unable to be removed without a unique key and would send electric shocks if she tried to run away while on a mission.

she made one friend at the time, a girl by the name of aurora. they met on a mission where lisanna was instructed to find a gang leader who was conducting illegal trade of heroin across the border. aurora was the boss' daughter, a gifted fighter and cunning personality. the night before, lisanna's future vision gave her a glimpse of black hair like the night. upon seeing the girl, lisanna was immediately mesmerized by her long, shiny black hair, and faltered before having to kill her and instead spared her life, knowing it would possibly cost her own due to her failure.

aurora, deciding to protect lisanna and herself, left her father's gang, chopped off her hair, dyed it a light brown, and went by the name victoria, the name of her deceased mother.

victoria, captivated by lisanna's mutation, nicknamed her angel after her snowy white wings. lisanna shared her stories of her time in captivity, her friendship with natsu, and her eventual transport to the training academy. victoria thought lisanna was beautiful, and much too sweet to have to live her life like this.

one night victoria couldn't sleep and snuck into lisanna's bunk, only to find the white-haired girl softly crying into her pillow. when she asked what was wrong, lisanna admitted she was tired of the life of kill or be killed, and just wanted to be free.

free to go where she wants, love who she wants, become who she wants.

victoria wiped away her tears and promised one day, they'd leave the assassination group and be together forever. without realizing what overcame her, lisanna abruptly kissed victoria, acting on feelings she'd been suppressing since the moment they met. to help her fall asleep, victoria would sing lullabies from her brazilian culture.

victoria and lisanna dated for nearly a year and succeeded on all their missions but one.

january 5th, 2056: the day they planned to leave this life of assassination and danger. victoria had snuck into one of the bosses' rooms, retrieving the key to their tracker anklets. they'd complete the mission, check in, destroy their anklets, and run away together.

this was the night lisanna planned to proclaim she'd been in love with victoria.

they were so close to freedom, just within arm's reach, but the fallen victim they'd been ordered to kill was a member of the same gang that victoria used to belong to. he recognized her blue eyes, and in his last breaths, he hissed out their motto, "betray the order is betraying family," and shot her in the head.

victoria died of blood loss before lisanna could bring her to a hospital. the words were on her lips in victoria's last moments, thinking i love you, i love you, i love you so much, but couldn't bring herself to say it because if she did, she knew she'd never be able to recover.

victoria beat her too it, whispering "i love you, lisanna," before her blue eyes shut and lisanna never saw them again.

after victoria's death, her funeral was issued by the league. it was a simple burial, uncommon to have a fallen member's body after death. lisanna would put flowers on her gravestone and sing her own lullaby, a song about fairies.

having nothing good left in her life, lisanna channeled all her anger into her missions and killed person after person mercilessly. for three years she rose up to be one of the top assassins of the league, so gifted she eventually knocked out twenty guards to get her anklet tracker key and escape one summer morning.

the sunshine was warm on her skin as she flew far, far away from the league. the summer reminded her of natsu, whom she still longed for when she was feeling sad.

lisanna found herself in several places, living a hard, lonely life on the run. she stayed in youth houses, always having to conceal her wings. at one point, she lived with the circus, known as one of the "ripley's freaks" (a real confidence boost to her self-esteem) for a little over a year. but lisanna didn't belong much of anywhere, and when someone had received notice of a girl with angel wings in the circus, she was taken back to the lab, only a few months before she saw her best friend again.

upon seeing her best friend in captivity, it alerted her into just how awful she had been in the past. as she remembered the names of all the people she killed, she vowed to atone for her sins and never kill another living soul again. she recognized how deeply-rooted her flaws were and channeled her frustration into boxing training, which she would do at night when the rest of the lab was asleep.

natsu and gray managed to escape after two weeks of being held hostage, however lisanna was banned from seeing them and never got to say goodbye as natsu left her once again. heartbroken, she hardly spoke to anyone and simply worked as a researcher and scientist for the hakai laboratory. she knew exactly what's going to become of Gray and Natsu, as her future vision would occasionally give her glimpses of their fates. she also knew what asano and the hakai lab scientists were planning, and it's not good. however, she knew not to speak up against the crimes or atrocities of their experimentation as she knew being on the other end of it was a million times worse.

but as she had learned, you must do what you have to to survive.

even if it means you're slowly dying on the inside.
