Airport Surprises

A/N: This was supposed to be published yesterday, but I didn't finish it in time. I'm working on Elizabeth_Schuylur's request and a few other ideas I have in mind. I almost made this into angst, but decided against it. It's pure fluff. Don't get used to it.

"Come on," Eliza picked up 3-year-old Philip and placed him on her hip. "Lets go meet daddy."

"Imma meet daddy?" Philip asked. Eliza smiled and nodded. Alexander and his friend, John Laurens, had been fighting in Afghanistan, and they finally come home today.

"Yay! What is dadda like?"

"Well, he likes to write. He would write a lot. And he loves your mommy very much, and she loves him." She responded with a warm smile.

"He seems awesome!" Philip exclaimed while playing with Eliza's locket that hung around her neck. "Have you and daddy kissed before?"

Eliza chuckled and swayed with him. "When did you learn about kissing?"

"You kiss me every night before bedtime!" He frowned.

"Fair enough." Eliza replied. "But yes, we have."

"Eww." Philip stuck out his tongue. "Gross!" This made Eliza laugh even harder. He was so innocent, and she wished he would always be like this.

It had been almost 4 years since she had seen Alexander, and she actually dropped her phone when she heard he was coming home. Tears had not been shed lightly, and she had spent the past few years in fear of her husband dying. Fear that he would never get to meet his son...

She still remembered the day he went off to fight. She was a mess, and so was Alex. She watched him go up the escalator with tears in her eyes, tears that were mutually being shared by Alexander. His auburn hair was pulled in a ponytail, his uniform was neatly ironed thanks to Eliza the morning before, and his military boots were polished and perfect.

"Don't worry about me." He told her, his voice cracking. "I'll be fine. I'll be back soon. It will be fine, my beautiful Betsey. I love you."

"I love you too." She whispered softly, relishing his warm embrace, which she would not be able to feel for 4 more years.

"Momma, are we gonna see Frances today?" He looked up at his mother with a grin on his face that only got wider when Eliza responded with a yes. Philip and Martha's 4 year old daughter, Frances, had become good friends ("Maybe something even more than friends" Martha had jokingly told Eliza one day), and they were practically inseparable.

Eliza strolled through the multiple restaurants and shops that were open for business, scanning for a place that Philip and her wouldn't mind eating at. She settled for a Burger King after Philip begged for one of those paper crowns that you get with every meal. After getting Philip's meal ready, Eliza got out her phone and texted Martha.

Elizabeth: Where are you?

Martha: Standing in line at Starbucks near gate B20, where r u?

Eliza: Burger King across from gate B34

Martha: k

Martha: Frances and I are going to wait for you in front of gate B34, then we can walk together to the gate.

Eliza: k, cleaning up now

Eliza sat up from the table she was currently sitting at and waited for her tiny toddler to finish eating. After he finally ate everything, she plucked Philip out of his booster seat and placed her phone back in her purse.

"Time to go meet up with Martha and Frances." She told Philip, who couldn't contain his excitement as much as Eliza and started to jump up and down. Eliza walked out of the Burger King with Philip's hand in hers. She scanned around the gate until she saw Martha and Frances, who were looking especially beautiful in their matching red dresses.

Martha turned around and squealed when she saw her friend in a navy dress. The girls gave each other hugs and began to talk about how excited they were to see their husbands as if they were schoolgirls who just got boyfriends.

Frances walked up to Philip and gave him a hug.

"I missed you." Frances told him.

"I missed you too." He responded back to her.

"Are you excited to meet your daddy?"

"I'm a teensy bit scared. But my mommy says he's nice." The boy shrugged. Frances giggled.

"I'm happy. I haven't seen my daddy since I was a little baby. But now I'm grown up!" She puffed out her chest.

"Have you met my daddy?"

"I think so. I think he tickled me."

"Oh."

"Mommy can we see daddy now?" Frances tugged on her mother's dress impatiently. Martha swooped down and picked up the young toddler while showering her with kisses, much to her chagrin.

"He hasn't arrived yet." She told her curious daughter. Then she looked at Eliza. "We should probably begin to walk, though."

Eliza agreed, and the foursome began to walk to the gate at which their husbands would be arriving at. The two ladies gossiped as the two children made funny faces at each other behind their mother's backs.

"I heard Lafayette and Elizabeth Sanders are also coming home." Martha told Eliza.

"Really? I haven't talked to Hercules in a few months, so it would be nice to see him again." She replied.

"Yeah. So, how do you think he's going to react?"

"Hercules?"

"No, Alexander."

"About Philip?"

"No, about your haircut. Of course about Philip! He has a literal son that he doesn't know about!"

"Not so loud in front of him!" Eliza shushed the eager Martha. Martha mouthed an apology back.

"I honestly don't know. We talked about having children before, and he wasn't against the idea. We've been married for well over six years now, and he always seemed to want to have a child. But of course, that was-"

"Four years ago." Martha finished for her. Eliza nodded.

"Well Mrs. Hamilton," she inhaled "I believe that your husband will just adore Philip as much as he adores you. Of course, he might upset with the fact that you never told him, but he'll get over that once he sees Philip's chubby little cheeks!" She comforted the woman with a laugh.

Eliza giggled a bit and then sighed. "I guess you're right."

The ladies walked in silence a bit before stumbling along a huge crowd at the soldier's arrival gate. Martha and Eliza gave each other an annoyed glance and walked over to the crowd.

"This has to be it." Eliza muttered, looking at the sea of people. It was filled with girlfriends, boyfriends, friends, family, children, pets, etc. It shocked Eliza to see how many soldiers were on this plane, and it shocked other passengers of other flights as well. Martha and Eliza both simultaneously put their children down on the tile, but still held their hands in fear of losing them.

Martha reached out for Eliza's hand and gave it a little squeeze as the desk attendant opened the door. Eliza held her breath and watched the first soldier walk out of the gate, who happened to be greeted with thunderous applause that he obviously wasn't expecting.

One by one, the soldiers began to file out. There was applause and crying as soldier after soldier came walking through the gate. Eliza eagerly awaited for the moment her husband would walk through the gate. She heard a choked sob to the left of her and saw Martha cover her mouth with her hand as she watched her husband walk out of the gate. John looked around for his wife and child before spotting them and running up to his wife, embracing her for the first time in a while. He looked more grown up and tired than she had seen him the last time. After kissing Martha and Frances, John looked to Eliza and smiled warmly. He made his way over to Eliza and hugged his best friend.

"How are ya, Liza?" He asked, pulling away. Eliza had known John since 4th grade, and had even introduced Martha to him when they were 16. John also happened to introduce Alex to Eliza in middle school.

"Nervous." She replied to the soldier.

"Don't be." John dismissed her with a wave of his hand. "He couldn't wait to see you again. That's all he could talk about. Eliza this, Eliza that. It got pretty annoying, not gonna lie."

Eliza laughed along with him, happy to see his humor was still intact even after the war. John looked to Philip and chuckled a bit.

"You have another brother? Jesus, when are your parents going to stop?" He ruffled the little boy's hair, much to Philip's dismay.

"He's not my brother, John." Eliza told him, a little red after his comment about her parents. "He's mine."

"He's yours?" John's eyes went wide. Eliza nodded.

"And Alexander's." She added, making sure he didn't think she was cheating on her husband.

"Holy Shi-"

"John!" Martha scolded her husband's choice of words.

"Sorry." John grinned sheepishly, then picked up his friend's son and placed him on his hip.

"Momma who's this?" Philip asked, turning his head so he was facing his mother.

"That's Frances' daddy." She told the curious boy, giving him a quick peck on his chubby cheek. Philip nodded slowly then grabbed a lock of John's blonde hair and started to play with it, causing the two women to laugh. John elbowed Eliza's arm and nodded towards the gate. Eliza jerked her head to see the man in uniform standing a few yards away from her.

She covered her mouth with her hands and slowly made her way towards him. Time seemed to slow down. The only thing Eliza wanted to do in this very moment was embrace her tired, handsome husband. She pushed past a few people and met Alexander's gaze. He looked older than the last time she saw him, more mature. More desirable. Alexander broke into a grin as he ran over to his wife and embraced her. Tears spilt down their faces and both began to break down crying. This was the moment she had been waiting for since the time he went off to war. After four years, she was finally able to touch him, kiss him, hug him. Eliza pulled away from Alexander and kissed him on his lips. She didn't care who saw them, she only cared that she was seeing her husband again. After what felt like years, the couple pulled apart and hugged again.

"I missed you so much." Eliza's voice was barely above a whisper.

"I missed you too." Alexander muttered in her ear, his voice hoarse and tired.

"God, you're so beautiful." He told her, and she giggled in reply. She had missed his stupid, endless flirting.

"You're so handsome." She told him through giggling and kissed his cheek.

The two finally pulled apart. Eliza wiped her and Alexander's tears away and began walking towards John and Martha, still holding hands. Alex embraced Martha and discreetly gave Frances an airplane biscotti that had been given to him during the flight. She eagerly opened the sugary treat and ate it quickly. His attention then turned to John and the toddler that was in his hands.

"You had another one? While he was gone?" He teased Martha. Martha pointed to the woman standing next to Alexander.

"Actually," she began "He's not ours."

Alexander turned to Eliza, a childlike wonder in his eyes.

"He's ours?" He asked, his voice barely audible. Eliza nodded. "This isn't some prank?"

"Nope." John told his awed friend. "He's all yours. Looks like you, too."

"It's true." Eliza added. "I found out a month after you left. I couldn't have told you before, I-" She was interrupted by Alexander swooping in and stealing his son from John, tickling the tiny boy to death.

"Momma," Philip said in between laughs. "Is...this daddy?"

Eliza wrapped her arms around the pair. "It is."

"He's nice."

"I know."

"I still can't believe I've been a father for three years and haven't known about it." Alexander shook his head in disbelief. "And I definitely still can't process the fact that I'm back home with my gorgeous wife and our beautiful son."

"Well, does this help?" Eliza asked as she kissed her husband. He melted into the tender kiss quickly before pulling away.

"It does indeed." He replied while grinning, snaking his arm around her waist.

"Ew!" Philip shook his head. "Gross!"

The couple began to laugh and walk down the airport, Alexander getting quite a few "Thank yous" and salutes as they walked. Eliza laid her head on his shoulder.

"I'm so glad you're home." She told him.

"And I'm so glad to be back."
